There are a ton of Grammy's given out each year for all kinds of categories. They only show the major ones on TV. Sometimes they will give a partial list or special note here and there on some of the other ones. I do remember they say to go to the Grammy website to see a full list of all winners. I'm not sure best historical set or whichever they are up for is one that has ever been shown. I've never watched thoroughly enough to really notice.

When I saw the topic of this thread, the first thing that popped into my head was Billy's audition for The Voice.  ;D

No one has mentioned this tidbit...CBS showed footage of The Beach Boys performing and a little interview with Brian & Mike tonight (Saturday) on "The Grammys Will Go On: A Death In The Family", a new one-hour special on CBS about the 2012 ceremony and how it all quickly came together in the aftermath of Whitney Houston's death. It aired at 9:00 PM East Coast time.

This is going to be the first time I've watched the Grammy's in, like, 30 years.

Back in '66/'67, you mean? I don't know. But there was the '99 incident about "Best LP of the Millenium" (or something to that effect). Or was that for the Sessions Box? "Best Historical Album"? Can't remember..

I watched the award online and screamed for joy when The Smile Sessions won.

Brian was so visibly moved by the accolade, he could barely finish his speech. Alan Boyd gave an especially gracious speech. Congrats to all involved in the TSS project!

Several "tweets" (I hate that I just typed that), indicate that Brian told someone at the Grammys that he doubts there will be another Beach Boys reunion.

The best news ever:
Brian Wilson wins a Grammy today in the Best Historical Album category for The SMiLE Sessions (Deluxe Box Set).
How wonderful to be able to go back in time when Brian was in his mid-twenties and then to release his fascinating SMiLE music recordings from 1967 in 2012.
Also, what a perfect day for Alan Boyd, Mark Linett & Dennis Wolfe for being the other three Grammy winning members of this SMiLE Sessions compilation production team.

Great news! Brian, the boys and those who put the set togetehr (including Mark) certainly deserve this. The ydid a splendid job in the 60s and in the 2000s. I love the Beach Boys!

I feel so proud, even though I had to nothing to with it, except to buy it and listen. Congrats to Brian and Van Dyke for writing it. To The Beach Boys for singing their hearts out on it. To Alan, Mark and Dennis for the super job of putting it all together. The guys are finally getting some hard-earned recognition over the past year or two.

Can someone explain to me why TSS wasn't in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edtion Package category? TSS should've at LEAST been nominated, it was amazing...

Wow - just looked at the nominees for this category and cannot see what they've got that TSS doesn't (and I love RAM).

Well, Macca got another Grammy for Kisses On The Bottom so I'm sure he's not bothered a losing out to TSS. These awards are so contrived, but of course TSS deserves the win by a country mile.

Seriously. I like Ram, but Ram versus Smile?? Come on. So happy the best album won. I'm glad Brian got yet another piece of vindication.

I started being a hardcore BB fan in 2011, and with all the amazing stuff that's happened since then, I can't help but think what a lucky son of a gun I am.

I'm so proud of and happy for Brian and the guys. This is perfect. Congrats!!!

I'm so pleased that Brian is alive to get this award. ;D But at the same time I wish Carl and Dennis were here to see it, they would be so proud of their brother.

Yes, McCartney's Ass Kissers album won a Grammy, so I'm sure he's fine with RAM not getting one. 

The Beach Boys won a Grammy for an album they didn't even finish!  Cool!

when he won best rock instrumental they took pictures... his quote was something like "I won a grammy! can you believe it? A grammy!"  He was thrilled.  Real big cheezy smile in all the pictures, too... he kind of looked like he didn't really know where to go (they hustle you through all these photo ops) and there were a few cool pictures of him holding the grammy up to his head.  

Very wonderful to read this news. We all believe it's well-deserved but what stunning vindication. Many many congrats to all concerned. Guess what's in the player today!

Brian looks and sounds rather frail in that interview. He might be getting over the flu, though.

Thrilling news that brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat...just ten years ago we'd have all thought a moment like this one could never, ever happen...

The fact that a band by the same name is playing Sea World alongside Shamu the very SAME WEEK that The BB's SMiLE wins a Grammy for achieving the highest levels of art is just plain baffling. Yes, I know there are people who can rationalize both sides of the band, but that dichotomy is just plain odd.

But back to the high fives all around for SMiLE finally getting its due!!!

Even though Smile is incredible and possibly the greatest album ever made, a night of bands, brew and BBQ at seaworld does sound fantastic

Looking "panoramically" at things, is the crux of diplomacy. And looking at both sides of the coin, or in 3D, impartially, over such a long time, is the norm, and not the exception.  People and band members have come and gone, during the existence of this musical phenomenon.  What is the point of getting into a faction, when the music is the unifying force here?  I don't get it.  And, while it is such an emotional event to win this very long overdue Grammy recognition, those long time fans, have been "in it" to "win it" since the release of the "teaser" version of SMiLE in 1967. (Smiley Smile)

Most of us are on the same page, and many of us never saw Brian in person, for nearly 40 years.  And, we never lost faith, and just looked to the "touring band" as those who were his messengers, (as Dennis said) on the recordings, and touring at the same time, and, just to use Carl as an example, facing jail time, for asserting a position against the war.  

And while it could and does bring a tear, I'd rather jump up and down with glee, that finally, this vindication has come.  And it seems that Bruce Johnston, and a Grammy winner in his own right, lobbied for the Historical Album category.  That category, coupled with the Music Teacher category is showing a more open-minded industry standard.  He tours with half of the "dichotomy."

Last night's win for the Historic Album was a victory for all, especially those Beach Boys vocalists, including Carl and Dennis, as it has been a combination of composition and the vocal blend that has made them stand out.  Brian knew just how to use each voice to make it shine in the inimitable family-based blend.

To those fans who bought the old Smiley Smile LP and took crap from your friends, last night was your victory, too!  And those FM radio stations who, went out on an open-minded limb and played Pet Sounds and Smiley, Surfs Up and Holland, high five to you, too!  It was a long journey for all.  "A long and winding road."  - To quote another band.

Brian looked like a handsome diplomat in his black blazer.  It is too bad that it was not included in the prime time segment, because it merited "prime time" attention, since many of these young performers took their inspiration from the vocal model of The Beach Boys, in general, and the Brian compositional model, in particular.  

Brian might even be an inspiration for the Music Teacher Grammy, although likely targeted for the academic arena, because his "students" have been his colleagues, protégés, and now are innumerable young musicians in Brian's global classroom.   ;)

Good thing the album that contained "Winchester Cathedral" wasn't reissued in an expanded, reamastered form.  ;)

I hope Brian's ok though he did sound a little bit sick. :(

This is what I mean, of course we know. The rest of America? They bought tickets to what they thought was a reunion tour.... If the promoters can't even tell the difference, what makes us think that the average American who doesn't really care about the BB like we do would be able to?

NARAS can suck it...what a joke. they should have dedicated the whole damn ceremony to him and america's band!

Guys, once again: when Brian was on stage before (and after?) accepting the Grammy that wasn't some 'extra guy' who was hired to hold Brian's hand but one of his co-winners, one of the guys we have to thank for the SMiLE SESSIONS. He simply was kind enough to (not only physically) assist a somewhat frail Brian up on stage. You know how he is with crowds, cameras and stuff. A bad back will do the rest.

Looked to me like Brian was nervous and wanted to be reassured by someone he knew and trusted. So he chose to hold hands with both of his collaborators. Nothing wrong with that. I don't think much of the Grammys but I'm sure glad Brian was around to get this award. I think it means a lot to him.

I saw Brian fall last year in Raleigh, NC, putting his bass on for the encore.  It had to have hurt him physically - and embarrassed him.  I don't blame him for wanting the security of a couple of folks holding onto him up on the Grammy stage.

Yes, facts are facts.  Hurray for that. Wow, Brian has two Grammys and Mike doesn't have any.  Stop the presses. What a news flash. That's not my point.  My point was, what compels people to make unnecessary, childish comments like that.  it adds nothing to the conversation and just makes a person look small and petty.  There's enough of that going around already.

This win kind of reminds me of my uncle in a way. He was a huge Beach Boys fans and would always sing the falsetto parts (not well though  :lol)

In 2000, he died of complications relating to cancer. He was only 43. a couple of years later I bought Pet Sounds and was mesmerized.

But it was a few years after that that really got me hooked. I was sitting in my "bachelor pad" at home (my uncle's former side appartment.) I saw a tape and put it into my 2XL (got as a Christmas gift in the Nineties, still got it  :lol)

When I heard Heroes, I went nuts. I eventually found Purple Chick's SMiLE and I got addicted.

Congrats to Brian and everyone who made SMiLE possible.

Didn't Mike hold Brian's hand when they walked out for a talk show appearance several months ago?  I think it's kind of sweet that Brian isn't self-conscious about having another guy hold his hand for assistance. He could have insisted on some scantily clad female beauty. They weren't in short supply at the Grammys. Not sure Melinda would have cared for that, though.

It surprises the hell out of me, not because I underestimate the Beach Boys but because I underestimate the Grammy's.

I read in a tabloid a while back that Prince had to have hip replacement surgery, and was extremely embarassed about it.  It is kind of sad seeing someone like him who's always been so youthful, and hip, and exciting grow old!

Also, a few people have been remembering Carl with these recent awards and recognition. I have, too. Carl was a huge, huge part of it. But, don't forget how Carl really felt about the Grammy's. He wrote a song about them on his first solo album.
