Title: Rank the tracks #9: Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)
Post by: Letsgoawayforawhile on December 07, 2012, 05:10:12 PM
Welcome, Bruce!

12. I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man - Fun song! Take that, Murry!
11. Amusement Parks U.S.A. - Just too much silly going on here.
10. The Girl from New York City - Not a big fan. Just don't do much for me.
9. Salt Lake City - The lyrics are lame, but that backing track is wonderful!
8. Summer Means New Love - I really like this instrumental. The strings are beautiful.
7. Girl Don't Tell Me - Definitely sounds like Ticket To Ride. I wish there would have been background vocals on this.
6. Then I Kissed Her - Al does a really great job here!
5. You're So Good to Me - I love this song. That guitar is awesome.
4. And Your Dream Comes True - 1:04 of pure vocal perfection. Wonderful.
3. Help Me, Rhonda - So much better than that Today! version. Al rules this song. Such a strong voice.
2. Let Him Run Wild - It was tough for me to put this at number 2. Pretty much perfect.
1. California Girls - The best intro of all time. GOD BLESS LSD!

I can't say it blows me out of the water quite like Today does, but by all accounts this is still a very good album with some classic tracks and underheard gems.  I'd also argue it's probably the most diverse Beach Boys album until 20/20, yet manages to be somewhat cohesive at the same time with its cutting harmonies.

The highs are even higher than those on Today! but it's definitely a more uneven album.

1. Help Me, Rhonda - That KILLER hook finally gets the justice it deserves.  I still don't like levels on the piano and guitar during the break tho.
2. California Girls - Brilliant
3. Girl Don't Tell Me - Imitation is the best form of flattery.  (Still would have liked some harmonies tho)
4. Let Him Run Wild - Apologies to Brian but I don't hear any problems!
5. Then I Kissed Her - Beating Spector at his own game!
6. You're So Good To Me - Nice fun rocker

Major drop, comparatively.  All fine songs but most of them have a bit of a "phoned in" feel, compared to those above and most of Today!

7. Summer Means New Love
8. And Your Dream Comes True
9. I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man
10. Salt Lake City
11. The Girl From New York City
12. Amusement Parks U.S.A.

Help Me Rhonda

And Your Dream Comes True
The Girl From New York City

Salt Lake City
Summertime Means New Love

Amusement Parks, USA

I'm Bugged at My Old Man

California Girls
Let Him Run Wild
You're So Good To Me- such a simple song compared to the average Brian song of this period, yet somehow I find it irresistable.
Help Me Rhonda
Girl Don't Tell Me
Summer Means New Love
The Girl From New York City- brilliant opener.
I'm Bugged At My Old Man - People take this too seriously.
Amusement Parks USA- The spoken bit goes on too long and irritates on repeated listenings. Great otherwise!
Salt Lake City- loved this, but it's something of a "shrinker" for me.
And Your Dreams Come True- To me, comes in really jarringly after the instrumental. I always want to turn the volume down. And the tune seems a bit of a throwaway.
And Then I Kissed Her- No disrespect to Al intended, but this is as good as the Crystals version how?

Er... well it's got some stonking production from Brian Wilson that beats Spector's hands down, plus Beach Boys backing vocals. I'd say That's how.

Post by: I. Spaceman on December 09, 2012, 01:34:00 PM
There is practically NO production effort from Brian on Then I Kissed Her. It is a very, very basic, nearly garage-band version of one of Spector's most glorious and layered slices of pop heaven. And Carl questions the wisdom of doing it at all during the session. He was right.

California Girls - best outro in musical history.
Help Me Rhonda
You're So Good To Me - la la la la la la la la
Girl Don't Tell Me - the message in this is brilliant. Love those lyrics.
Summer Means New Love - good instrumental, which he trumps tenfold with LGAFAW on Pet Sounds
Amusement Parks USA - that organ is brilliant. I get creeped out by that spoken word part though
The Girl From New York City
And Your Dreams Come True - beautiful harmonies
Let Him Run Wild
I'm Bugged At My Old Man - great raw feel to it
And Then I Kissed Her
Salt Lake City -

Help me, Rhonda (Perfection. The instrumental break is one of Brian's greatest moments.)
California Girls (Also perfection. I see this as 1B to Rhonda's 1A. Another time Brian inserts a musical break well.)
Let Him Run Wild (An underrated gem. I like Brian's voice here despite what he says.)
Summer Means New Love (To me, this is the song musically that hints at Pet Sounds. Absolutely beautiful.)
The Girl from NYC (nice opener.)
Then I Kissed Her (Along with Rhonda, the song that proved that Al could sing.)
You're So Good to Me (An advanced "fun in the sun" song.)
And Your Dream Comes True (Really nice closer.)
Salt Lake City (Fun little song.)
Girl Don't Tell Me (Fun little ditty but a bit boring.)
Amusement Parks U.S.A. (Too cheesy. I like the middle part with Hal as the barker though.)
I'm Bugged at my Old Man (Yuck.)

Anyone who didn't vote for "I'm bugged at my old man" as their top song on this album, needs to get their head examined.

Anyway here's my list. Only the last 2 songs on the list I'm not too excited over. Great album overall.

1. "I'm Bugged At My Old Man." Absolute masterpiece. Work of genius. How could anyone not like it?
2. "Let Him Run Wild." Hits so many of the right buttons musically.
3. "California Girls." Not liking this song is like saying you don't like sunny days.
4. "The Girl From NYC." Great straightforward rock 'n roll song. Catchy opener.
5. "And Your Dreams Come True." Breathtaking harmonies. Perfect closer. Time to go to sleep.
6. "Amusement Parks USA." A bit corny, but a really fun song.
7. "Girl Don't Tell Me." Ripoff of the Beatles Ticket To Ride, but it does a great job of adding variety. Helps give the album a real "60's" feel.
8. "Help Me Rhonda." Putting this at #8 doesn't mean I don't like the song. It's just that there's too much competition on this album.
9. "Salt Lake City." Putting this at #9 doesn't mean I don't like the song. It's just that there's too much competition on this album.
10. "Summer Means New Love." Not usually into instrumentals, but I always listen to this one.
11. "Then I Kissed Her." OK song, but not great.
12. "You're So Good To Me." Perhaps it was intentional, but the words of this song don't really seem to match the melody and arrangement. Is this a guy who's a jerk (and he knows it) wondering why his girlfriend is so good to him even though he doesn't deserve it, and is also singing like a jerk? Anyway it's a bit annoying.

1. Let Him Run Wild- Pop at its finest, it's amazing and one of Brian's best.
2. Help Me Rhonda- Amazing hook with terrifically raw and killing vocals from Al. Justice is served,
3. California Girls- The intro, the chorus and the lyrics aren't that bad. Beach Boys finest.
4. You're So Good To Me- Amazing song with a lovely intro and a great chorus. Should have been a big hit.
5. The Girl From New York City- Amazing intro to the album and great vocals.
6. And Your Dreams Come True- Amazing harmony and voices.
7. Summer Means New Love- An amazing instrumental.
8. I'm Bugged At My Old Man- A really fun and humorous song, don't know why it's given such a bad rap.
9. Girl Don't Tell Me- A pretty boring, weak and tiresome song (like most of the Beatles' catalogue) and it shows as a Beatles imitation. Poor lyrics and poor melody.
10. Then I Kissed Her- Great vocals by Al and good instrumentation. Never a fan of the original, weak lyrics.
11. Amusement Parks USA- "Lllllllet's take your car..." I love that part, it falters later.
12. Salt Lake City- Lame melody and lame lyrics. Awful.

I think we take California Girls for granted and overlook just how perfect it is: the structure is like Bach in its mathematical genius. The 'girls, girls, girls' harmony on the outro is one of those all-time great musical moments. Only the organ dates it: a bit too fairground.

You're So Good To Me is great played loud in concert but it's not a great listening experience at home.

They may be well-produced, but IMO they're just average compositions. And the laughter on Amusement Parks is unbearable, it makes it hard for me to listen to the song.

Well, some of the things on Smile are repetitious drones with great vocal work and instrumentation on top, and those make the grade as great recordings. I see what you're saying about the laughter, but I guess I am nuts, I love the sound of laughter.

I do like the sound of laughter, but not when it sounds so fake, forced and maniacal.

I can appreciate your viewpoint, and before becoming a Beach Boys fan I had the same aesthetic. But Brian taught me how to take overwrought silliness in huge gulps. Now I can't get ENOUGH forced laughter.

Yes, I love the lyrics. But I think anyone who judges great Beach Boys music on the lyrical content is entirely missing the point of the band, and rock and roll in general. The preeminence of intellectual content in rock lyrics is a joke.

I don't judge the Beach Boys on lyrical content alone, and I do like a lot of their 'fun' songs - but I don't care for the way the lyrics scan in those two songs. Not above listening to them sing about Salt Lake City, but "the way the kids talk so cool is an out-of-sight thing" just doesn't do it for me.

The Beach Boys are masters of the art of goofy lyric scans.

Great album. Lots of great songs. Brian stretching out musically, but they are still projecting a more "youthful" type thing then anything they did after.

1 "California Girls": What can I say? The majestic opening, the classic Mike Love vocal, Brian and Bruce standing out on the chorus. Wonderful.
2 "Help Me, Rhonda": Al in top form. The rumbling piano, the awesome guitar break, Mike's "bow-bow-bow" vocal. Amazing.
3 "You're So Good To Me": Brian with a powerful lead vocal on another beautifully sung, up-tempo, sunny jam.
4 "The Girl From New York City": Another great rock 'n roll song. Great sax part. Powerful Mike Love lead.
5 "Amusement Parks USA": Could be looked at as cheesy and outdated, but the track is great and Mike sings the lyrics convincingly. This one rocks too.
6 "Then I Kissed Her": I love The Ronettes, but this one gives their version a run for it's money. Al with a spot on vocal, and Brian providing another great track.
7 "Salt Lake City":  Solid song, if a bit goofy. The harmonies are good. The track is good. The lyrics are useless.
8 "Summer Means New Love": Lovely mellow mood music. I wouldn't have minded if Brian did a whole instrumental album like this.
9 "And Your Dream Comes True": A nice little a cappella. Beautiful vocals. No complaints here.
10 "Let Him Run Wild": I honestly think this one is a bit overrated. Brian's vocals are good, but they are a bit whiny. The lyrics are kinda clunky too.
11 "I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man": It probably woulda been better as a b-side, if they did that kinda thing.
12 "Girl Don't Tell Me": Kinda just a Beatles rip off to me. Everything is well played and the melody is alright, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Haha. Whoops. Honestly, I don't like that one. Too much of a Beatles rip off. But I guess I should add that in! Thanks Gertie.

1. Let Him Run Wild - My 2nd favorite Beach Boys song. A stunning, ingenious production (LOVE that backing track), a great Brian vocal and amazing little transitions and chord progressions. Astonishing tune, a real masterpiece.
2. California Girls - Timeless and sublime, despite over-familiarity and the dated lyrics. The track is wonderful and the intro is unbelievable. Pure genius.
3. You're So Good To Me - Always loved this one. Great tune.
4. Summer Means New Love - NICE, quite underrated, one of the best BBs instrumentals. Brian's use of french horn always kills me (see also 'God Only Knows').
5. Help Me Rhonda - The superior version, more exciting and fun.
6. Girl Don't Tell Me - Awesome song, love it.
7. And Your Dream Comes True - Sweet n' short n' a capella. A lullaby to summer.
8. The Girl From New York City - Really terrific tune, kicks ass. Especially Brian's falsetto wails.
9. Salt Lake City - Nifty track, bright and vibrant. Turns a "meh" lyric into a great song.
10. Then I Kissed Her - Okay cover. Much prefer the Crystals' original. Nice though.
11. Amusement Parks USA - Good song. LOVE old school amusement parks, so this is right up my alley.
12. I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man - Funny vocal and pretty silly all around, but still it's totally filler.

One of my very favorite Beach Boys album, second only to Pet Sounds, Today and Sunflower I'd say. Just wonderful.

1. California Girls - 347 (12)
2. Help Me, Rhonda - 315 (6)
3. Let Him Run Wild - 298 (12)
4. You're So Good to Me - 246
5. Girl Don't Tell Me - 222 (1)
6. The Girl from New York City - 208
7. Summer Means New Love - 181
8. Then I Kissed Her - 173
9. Salt Lake City - 150
10. And Your Dreams Come True - 141
11. Amusement Parks U.S.A. - 128
12. I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man - 87 (1)

My thoughts?  I don't think I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man is the worst song on the album.  It is particularly interesting how California Girls and Let Him Run Wild share in first place votes, yet Help Me Rhonda slides between them (which is too high IMO).  I suppose Let Him Run Wild is a more polarizing song.
