I think we take California Girls for granted and overlook just how perfect it is: the structure is like Bach in its mathematical genius. The 'girls, girls, girls' harmony on the outro is one of those all-time great musical moments. Only the organ dates it: a bit too fairground.
You're So Good To Me is great played loud in concert but it's not a great listening experience at home.

Strange that Amusement Parks and Salt Lake are so underrated here, they are two of Brian's best productions of the era.

They may be well-produced, but IMO they're just average compositions. And the laughter on Amusement Parks is unbearable, it makes it hard for me to listen to the song.

Well, some of the things on Smile are repetitious drones with great vocal work and instrumentation on top, and those make the grade as great recordings. I see what you're saying about the laughter, but I guess I am nuts, I love the sound of laughter.

Are you a big fan of the lyrics?
I like the tunes, I just think the lyrics really hurt them. Especially Salt Lake City. That instrumental is great.

I do like the sound of laughter, but not when it sounds so fake, forced and maniacal.

I can appreciate your viewpoint, and before becoming a Beach Boys fan I had the same aesthetic. But Brian taught me how to take overwrought silliness in huge gulps. Now I can't get ENOUGH forced laughter.

Yes, I love the lyrics. But I think anyone who judges great Beach Boys music on the lyrical content is entirely missing the point of the band, and rock and roll in general. The preeminence of intellectual content in rock lyrics is a joke.

I don't judge the Beach Boys on lyrical content alone, and I do like a lot of their 'fun' songs - but I don't care for the way the lyrics scan in those two songs. Not above listening to them sing about Salt Lake City, but "the way the kids talk so cool is an out-of-sight thing" just doesn't do it for me.

The Beach Boys are masters of the art of goofy lyric scans.

The lyrics are fine by me, but I also think they're worse than all the other lyrics on that album. Maybe it's just me?

Great album. Lots of great songs. Brian stretching out musically, but they are still projecting a more "youthful" type thing then anything they did after.
1
"California Girls"
: What can I say? The majestic opening, the classic Mike Love vocal, Brian and Bruce standing out on the chorus. Wonderful.
2
"Help Me, Rhonda"
: Al in top form. The rumbling piano, the awesome guitar break, Mike's "bow-bow-bow" vocal. Amazing.
3
"You're So Good To Me"
: Brian with a powerful lead vocal on another beautifully sung, up-tempo, sunny jam.
4
"The Girl From New York City"
: Another great rock 'n roll song. Great sax part. Powerful Mike Love lead.
5
"Amusement Parks USA"
: Could be looked at as cheesy and outdated, but the track is great and Mike sings the lyrics convincingly. This one rocks too.
6
"Then I Kissed Her"
: I love The Ronettes, but this one gives their version a run for it's money. Al with a spot on vocal, and Brian providing another great track.
7
"Salt Lake City"
: Solid song, if a bit goofy. The harmonies are good. The track is good. The lyrics are useless.
8
"Summer Means New Love"
: Lovely mellow mood music. I wouldn't have minded if Brian did a whole instrumental album like this.
9
"And Your Dream Comes True"
: A nice little a cappella. Beautiful vocals. No complaints here.
10
"Let Him Run Wild"
: I honestly think this one is a bit overrated. Brian's vocals are good, but they are a bit whiny. The lyrics are kinda clunky too.
11
"I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man"
: It probably woulda been better as a b-side, if they did that kinda thing.
12
"Girl Don't Tell Me"
: Kinda just a Beatles rip off to me. Everything is well played and the melody is alright, but it just doesn't do anything for me.
