Title: How Will You Be Obtaining 'That's Why God Made The Radio' (Album)
Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on May 20, 2012, 10:32:21 AM
Obviously, there are going top be 3 Standard issues of TWGMTR (4 if you count the Japanese issue) - CD, Vinyl and Download. How will you be purchasing yours?

Me? I'll have to get the CD and the LP, no question about it!

Date wise, fingers crossed my store should get in it on the thursday before like TSS. The following Monday and Tuesday are No-Go days for stores in the UK, so the release won't fare to well on that front!

I'll be getting the 6 disk box set of 78s when it comes out, hey if Good Vibrations can get a 78 release in 2011 why not?

Seriously though i'll be getting both the CD and the US vinyl. You guys might think i'm crazy but even though I can order it here in England at a cheaper price i'm going to get an American copy just because I want a 1st US Vinyl pressing of every Beach Boys and Brian Wilson album from it's country of origin. :-[

I'm getting the super deluxe edition, with an autographed surfboard, an exclusive t-shirt, a signed print and a scratch'n'sniff card to be used while playing the album ("rain on the sand" for "Summer's Gone", "salt water and algae" for "Daybreak...", "banknote ink" for "Spring Vacation" and "Mike Love's aftershave lotion" for "Beaches in Mind")

I can't wait!

The leaked version will appear first anyhow - if it's in good quality I might skip the CD and "just" order the vinyl. If the leaked version ain't up to standard I'll order the CD and the vinyl.

...

Scratch that, I'll get one them CDs for my father anyway, so... who said something about a leak??  ::) ??? ;D I didn't.

Leaks are inevitable, no secret about that. But I plan on obtaining it by getting in a car, driving to a store, and buying it. Vinyl for sure, maybe the cd first if that comes out before the vinyl (I read about how the vinyl had a later release date).

I shall download it illegally and then buy the vinyl when it is available.

And I make no apologies. The download will be made with 100% expectation of buying the product when the record company is able to release it.

Me too. I was hoping the vinyl release would come with a digital download code and I could go buy that on release date, but it doesn't look like it'll have a download and the vinyl release is going to be almost a month after the CD. So, I'll probably find a copy to download around release date and then buy the vinyl when it's out. I'm not going to pay for 2 copies of the album.

I would normally download it illegally as well as getting the vinyl, but this is a new Beach Boys album!! So of course I need a CD copy as well. ;D

Whilst I'd love to walk into Rough Trade and buy the vinyl, if it's coming out late (or not at all in Blighty) I'll go the 'download illegally and pay for a physical copy when I can' route.

How hard is it for one of the big major record labels to press vinyl on time for a release, anyway?

For the most part the major record companies do not press vinyl themselves any more.

The most daft case is EMI in Middlesex.....they sold off their world famous vinyl mastering and pressing facility feeling it had 'had it's day'.....it was bought out by a manager and continues to churn out top quality vinyl to this day....and one if it's biggest customers is EMI. Utterly daft.

I don't think the industry predicted that LP's would make a significant comeback - which to some extent they have. Most of the major players ceased mastering and pressing in house and contract out to smaller (even boutique) companies for vinyl. The quality is often excellent but it can mean a backlog.

I would rather wait than not get it at all. Though it is looking like I might have to order from the USA.

I'm sure this has been covered before both on this board and all over the Internet, but doesn't it defeat the purpose to have an analog vinyl rendering of a digitally recorded and mastered product?  Just pressing it on vinyl isn't going to give it back what it lost from doing it digitally.  It doesn't convert it back to analog, it just adds pops and clicks and whatever limitations the quality of your turntable, cartridge, and pre-amp subtract from the picture.  Though the artwork might look cooler.

Post by: EgoHanger1966 on May 21, 2012, 11:34:33 AM
The mastering of the vinyl (by necessity) has to be different than the mastering of the CD. So, potentially, the vinyl could sound better than the CD if it is less brickwalled or different EQ moves etc.
But you are right, it's not the same as an pure analog sound.

Yeah, it depends on how digital vinyl pressing is done.

In my experience, some reissues (Plain Recordings is especially guilty, some others are too) just run the CD off to the mastering plant (with the bare minimum of EQing). Or, in a slightly lesser evil, you can just use the same master, as I believe is done for certain new vinyl I've bought.

But if you make a separate, not even 'analogue' master as such but at the least a unique vinyl master, the sound is often amazing and comparable to analog pressings. BWPS is a good example. I'm away from my record collection right now, but I'm sure I've got other new vinyls that are the bomb and recorded/mastered digitally.

And I like crackles and pops  ;)

I'm going to do what I always do when a new Beach Boys CD comes out.  Or Brian Wilson Cd.

Drive to Best Buy; buy the album.  Go out in the parking lot and read the book while I listen to the radio.  Then, pop the CD in and listen to it when I drive 30 minutes to work.  Nothing like it!

I'll use Spotify or Rdio to listen to it in the car and at work, then I'll get the vinyl when it comes out. Even if the mastering is identical, I just want to be able to line it up next to the vinyl copies of everything else Brian's done. Well, other than Imagination, which to my knowledge has never been pressed on vinyl.

I'm taking the Best Buy route too, but only because I don't want to wait a day or two for an Amazon order. But normally, when going to Best Buy, I have to hear some lame excuse about how the shipment hasn't come in yet - then after poking around a bit find them stashed behind a Celine Dion album in the New Releases section.

The only time I illegally obtain Beach Boys music is when it's not available legally..

It's crazy but I couldn't bring myself to download the new album illegally if I tried..

I'll buy it from itunes at midnight, get the album in the store the following day and buy the vinyl sooner or later

I've been going to the same Best Buy since I was a kid a few miles down the road.... I just go in and make myself at home.  As long as you don't put something in your pocket and walk out the door, they don't really have any case against you, lol.

So, I walk in with plenty of time to spare.... I casually stroll over to the cd section, and if they're not putting anything out, or the cd isn't out yet, I just look around and find their boxes.  Open the boxes until you find your cd.

Don't ever ask them anything, they don't know and don't care, lol.  Help yourself.

Honestly though, I've never had a problem, but I may have a good store.  Everytime I go in there's always at least a few copies of whatever new album I'm looking for.

One possibility would be "living in Germany", where the official release date is June 1st. Records always come out on Fridays here, and for some reason always the Friday before they come out in the US.

I guess I can't wait for the vinyl so I'll buy a CD too. Usually I buy only the vinyl. Those damn music industry people have won.

I hear 'ya Brother, but in my case at least, I'm an American who just happens to work in an indie record shop which (like many mom n' pop's) won't raise an eyebrow over one sale a couple of days early.

My indie isn't opened on Tuesdays (it's in a flea market, kind of, that's open Fri-Sat-Sun).
You just gotta ask nice enough - I'll be getting mine next Friday too!

I don't thik he was suggesting he would run straight out the next day and get the album, he's probably just going to download Itunes immediately because it's easy, then pick up the album whenever he sees it.

He said he'd get it at midnight, then go to the store the following day. Maybe slim is rich  :o

I can wait a couple of days. Pre-ordered at Amazon. Don't have to leave the house or pay tax and has the best price.

Here's a thought for UK folk

I just realised Monday week (release day) is the Queen's bank holiday, so no post.  For Amazon orders, do you think they will send them out for Friday or I guess it is more likely Amazon UK orders won't arrive until Wednesday.  I might see if Sainsbury's have it on release day instead...

Just called up my local indie record store.  I asked if they would be getting the album early, the guy said no, and that they would be getting it on June 5 (?).  I would imagine they would be getting it before that, right?  I don't have any sort of intimate relationship with any of the workers over there, the store is nice enough and promoted TSS big time, but they're employees aren't the kindest bunch.

Oh well.  Looks like I have to wait.

The guy could just be saying that, but it also wouldn't surprise me if major labels were now sometimes holding off on sending albums to "evil" mom and pop shops as early as the chain stores due to their occasional selling of new albums before the release date as a measure to prevent leaks.

Boy, that was a terrible sentence. Hopefully you get what I mean, though.

Tower Records still exist in Dublin and that's my port of call when the CD and eventually the Vinyl comes out.  Still prefer to get a physical product, especially since iTunes (mostly) just gives you the jam but not the jam jars..

Is it possible that any of the retailers will have special throw-ins on release day, like bonus tracks, a key chain or whatever?  Best Buy sometimes has little extras, though not as often as they used to, and more often for DVD's than CD's.  Target, too, but they don't even seem to have it available for pre-order. Best Buy also sometimes has new releases for $9.99 or less.

Buying from an indie store comes with a free contribution to not getting f***ed in the ass at your job in the future.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Capitol's really been keeping a lid on this thing.

See The Smile Sessions only getting online AFTER its release date, which is extremely rare in this day and age, especially for a well known band. I think maybe the two disc version got out the day before or the day of, but I only saw the box set pop up on sites over a week later. Damn!
