A lot of those old soul songs get me really pumped up. I like everyone from Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding to Smokey, Stevie, Martha and the Vandellas, the Four Tops, Aretha, the Tempts, Sam Cooke, Sam and Dave, James Brown, Billy Paul, the O'Jays, and even early Jacko on occasion. Some tracks ("Land of 1000 Dances", "War", "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" for examples) rock even harder than Hendrix, Cream, and the Who. I think the big reasons why I love the old R&B are the kickass backing bands (Funk Brothers, Booker T and the MGs, Muscle Shoals guys, etc.) and organic instrumentation/arrangements. Funk kept the spirit alive into the early 80s, but I think "real" R&B pretty much started to die with disco and the final nail was put in the coffin when New Jack Swing came along. There were some good singers who were unfortunately victims of lame 80s/90s/00s R&B production. The Stax house band would've done wonders for guys like Luther Vandross. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are great, though. Modern-retro soul...they played on Amy Winehouse's Back to Black.Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Post by: Ron on March 03, 2012, 09:40:43 PM I gotta disagree about the New Jack Swing, I absolutely love that stuff. It didn't kill R&B, R&B is still alive and doing well.
Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Post by: LetHimRun on March 03, 2012, 09:45:36 PM I have a pretty big collection of R&B/Soul/Motown songs. Four Tops, Temptations, Miracles, Supremes, Drifters, Sam&Dave, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Martha and the Vandellas, etc.
I think I'd have to go with The Supremes as my favorites, but barely over the Four Tops, Miracles, and Same Cooke. Holland-Dozier-Holland were an absolute force of a writing team and cranked out a lot of fantastic material, mostly for The Supremes and Four Tops. Post by: Rocker on March 04, 2012, 05:06:25 AM I love that music. Especially the 60s stuff from Stax, Motown, etc. For my taste the artists from tose years were still enough connected with R'n'B and the Blues which I myself hold dearly in my heart. I don't care for modern day"R'n'B" and "Soul". Although there certainly are very good artists and recordings, the stuff you hear on the radio/charts is just plain terrible and has almost nothing to do with what made the music so great.
I for some reason can't get that much into James Brown's music. I like some of it but I stickmostly to other artists. I love Joe Tex for example although he often just repeated himself. But there are recordings that are so great that you can overlook that. "I gotcha", man what a song !!! Funky in every ounce of it's being. You ever seen this? Part1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBU9rtviKWc&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBU9rtviKWc&feature=related) Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgDV6PSA2sM&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgDV6PSA2sM&feature=related) Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR5QnL4C6zA&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR5QnL4C6zA&feature=related) I also love Lee Dorsey. Everything he did was funky (pun intended). There's so much great music and I hope I'll get to know much more than I do right now. Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Well all I know is I like the sound of it, even if it is a drum machine. "SWV" were awesome in every way, Bel Biv Devoe were great, Boys II Men were great, Bobby Brown was great, Michael Jackson's New Jack Swing stuff was all good in my opinion (stuff like "Jam", "Remember the Time", "Keep the Faith", "Dangerous", etc.) Tony Toni Tone were INCREDIBLE soul musicians. I don't see how you can say New Jack murdered Soul music... have you never heard "It Never Rains in Southern California" ? It doesn't get much better than that. Of course Motown was great but don't completely disregard an entire decade of good music just to prove how great Marvin Gaye was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yNibj8LW-Q Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Post by: Ron on March 04, 2012, 03:02:43 PM OH, some more soul r&b stuff I find fascinating since I live in Charlotte is all the great beach music that came out in the 70's. Lots of bands played along the strip in the Carolinas, and would do tons of cover songs, as well as originals that SOUNDED like cover songs. Here's a great one, fascinating too that the band members are white, Soul is colorblind I suppose! Song actually recorded in Charlotte in 1975.

Some of the ol' cats updated their sound - at least for a while - with some funk stuff in the late 60s/early 70s. Bo Diddley did three cool funk albums. Jerry Lee Lewis' "Southern roots" (featuring the MG's) remains one of his best albums. Also Elvis' '69 Memphis recordings and some of the cuts he did at Stax (If you talk in your sleep, I got a feeling and much of the Raised on Rock album) were very much in that language. Plus everything Tony Joe White did back then - right into the 80s - was funky and souly (does this word exist?) to death. Here are some cool ones: Bo Diddley - Bite you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8rDqZJJa0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8rDqZJJa0) Jerry Lee Lewis - Just a little bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dvwhM1vlSc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dvwhM1vlSc) Fats Domino - Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMwNd-WSXo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMwNd-WSXo) Little Richard - Nuki suki http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pb9-yRNnO0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pb9-yRNnO0) Tony Joe White - I get off on it (1980) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqXxK-gK0w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqXxK-gK0w) I couldn't listen to the videos, so I hope I got all the right versions. Here are some cool ones: Bo Diddley - Bite you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8rDqZJJa0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8rDqZJJa0) Jerry Lee Lewis - Just a little bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dvwhM1vlSc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dvwhM1vlSc) Fats Domino - Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMwNd-WSXo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMwNd-WSXo) Little Richard - Nuki suki http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pb9-yRNnO0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pb9-yRNnO0) Tony Joe White - I get off on it (1980) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqXxK-gK0w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqXxK-gK0w) I couldn't listen to the videos, so I hope I got all the right versions. I think R'n'B, funk, soul and country'n'western for that matter were the natural directions they would've gone (and they did partly of course) if it wasn't for those many rock'n'roll revival. Carl Perkins really started to go downhill imo when he tried to always write a nostalgic "start of rock'n'roll song" that mentioned as many hits of the 50s as possible. Not unlike Mike Love with some of his latter Beach Boys contributions. BTW for all, please listen to this. Pride & Joy is my favorite Marvin Gaye song. People use words like "Corny", but what they really mean is "It's so true I don't want to admit how true it is". It's the same reason people consider Elvis' voice "corny". It's because it's perfect. Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Post by: Ron on March 05, 2012, 04:45:51 PM I'm a HUGE Temptations fan. My goal is to get every album they've put out. I think they've done about 65 albums since 1964. ;D I have probably 30 of them. The problem is that several of their albums have never been issued on cd. Then download them like everybody else does..use itunes or amazon :)who was your favorite lead singer...David,Paul,eddie or Dennis? I've often thought that too... he had certain things he could do, that no 1 other singer COULD do. For instance, he could sing with that really nice "crack" in his voice, like Teddy Pendergrass or somebody has; but could also sing smooth, or sing an incredibly high falsetto. Here's a cool one: After Ruffin was kicked out of the Temptations it almost seems like his mission was to record songs that showed off how great he was. In 1975 he recorded this motherfucker here. There isn't 1 person, that ever lived, that could sing this song. Michael Jackson is incapable of singing this song. Gerald Lavert doesn't have it like this. I mean in my opinion, only David Ruffin could have recorded this. I'm not saying it's the greatest ever, it isn't. I'm just saying it's impossible to sing like that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7ewr_aiUCU&feature=related Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? This DVD contains three outstanding programs in a who's who memorial concert filmed live at the Palais De Festivale Hall, Cannes, France. From the early 1960's and into the 1070's, Stax Recording Studio established itself as the heart of Soul music and gave birth to many Memphis music legends. It became the very model of the greatness all races can create when working together. Features performances from Sam Moore, Booker T & the M.G.'s, Carla Thomas, Phil Upchurch, the Memphis Horns and Eddie Floyd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBPRcKpNOYU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBPRcKpNOYU) Title: Re: Does anybody here listen to R&B/Soul Music? Isaac Hayes: No, because I did it first. :lol |
