Title: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: BananaLouie on February 05, 2012, 02:34:07 PM Maybe I'm running out of good thread topics but what do you think are some "cool" Beach Boys songs, by cool I mean hip, relevant, perhaps trendy and contemporary sounding, I for one think Dennis's 3 rockers from Sunflower, I'm Going Your Way and Sound Of Free are all really stellar and cool sounding songs that should've been more heavily promoted when The Beach Boys were just starting to become hip again to the counter culture. Feel free to discuss. 8)

For a late 60's hard rock track that has aged remarkably well and still sounds pretty rad. Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: BananaLouie on February 05, 2012, 02:58:29 PM All I Want To Do For a late 60's hard rock track that has aged remarkably well and still sounds pretty rad. Yes! For sure, Another cool Dennis rocker, he was good at this! It's too bad The Beach Boys didn't re-invent themselves in a way that would have Dennis as the cool, sexy frontman and main songwriter. Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: BananaLouie on February 05, 2012, 03:06:08 PM When Blondie and Ricky joined the BB's, they gave the band a certain punch and helped make them really polished live performers. They contributed some really cool sounding songs as well like Here She Comes and Leaving This Town.
Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: drbeachboy on February 05, 2012, 04:22:14 PM Also, Sail On Sailor. Songs don't get much cooler than that. Great lead vocal, background vocals, and great jazz guitar work.

Here She Comes It's About Time Surf's Up Forever Long Promised Road Feel Flows Hard Times The Trader California Dreaming All This Is That Darlin' * Marcella * * from In Concert Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Runaways on March 21, 2012, 10:11:27 PM darlin is not cool at all in my opinion. neither is california dreaming (whaaat?). i assume we mean cool as in cool to now yes? the banjo break in mess up help is a cool moment.
a day in the life of a tree (if mgmt sings it then it's hard to ignore) surf's up all i wanna do (animal collective take from it) feel flows friends album i'd love just once want to see you much smile stuff Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Phoenix on March 21, 2012, 11:36:59 PM darlin is not cool at all in my opinion. neither is california dreaming (whaaat?). i assume we mean cool as in cool to now yes? the banjo break in mess up help is a cool moment. Too true. In fact, I had CD on my list list I was making it but when I listened to it to check, it didn't stand up. Cool for 1985 doesn't mean it holds up. I meant to remove it before I moved on but missed it. Darlin' isn't nearly as cool as the others on the list and probably should have been left off to but I always liked the one-two punch of it and Marcella from the live album. Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Craig Boyd on March 22, 2012, 05:30:01 AM All I Wanna Do from Sunflower is the coolest song they ever did. I'm not even sure how that song came about but there's nothing from that time that approaches it sonically IMO. It was about 30 years ahead of its time!
Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Zack on March 22, 2012, 05:30:15 AM Any song that doesn't contain the word "kids," "groovy," or "cool" or "outtasight." And Salt Lake City. :lol
Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: hypehat on March 22, 2012, 06:22:27 AM Darlin' is well cool.
However, I'd say Holland. Fits in perfectly with lots of early 70's Asylum type country rock, like Neil Young or Judee Sill or something. Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: lee on March 22, 2012, 06:44:52 AM I dig the Live in London version of Darlin' but I've never liked the album version. I feel the same way with Marcella as well. The In Concert version is great but the album version is very lacking.
Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Myk Luhv on March 22, 2012, 11:04:15 AM I've turned a lot of friends onto at least one BBs song, a bonafide deep cut, the monstrously excellent and incredibly underrated (even by fans!) "Celebrate the News". That section towards the end when Brian comes in and it goes drum-march crazy is so f*cking amazing! This song deserves a much wider release than it has received (the "Breakaway" B-side then the Aus/Japan Rarities comp), which surely contributes to its neglect.
It also constantly blows my mind "All I Wanna Do" was recorded in 1969 -- 43 years ago -- because it sounds so incredibly "now", like it could've come out at any point in this last decade. I wish they had recorded more songs like that... Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: stack-o-tracks on March 22, 2012, 11:48:06 AM Today! through Holland seem to be pretty hip with the hipsters, and since this is 2012 and hipsters are the cool people now, the cool songs will be on those albums. Though you don't hear them mention the 67-69 material as much.

Some of my favorite videos: 1. Dennis singing Never Learn not to Love (tv show) 2. Wild Honey live with Blondie on lead 3. Don't Go Near the Water (in a gazeebo) 4. I Need a Mess of Help 5. Feel Flows live (1977) 6. Pet Sounds promos 7. SMiLE videos All hip! Cool Cool Water Surf's Up Don't Talk (Put your head on my shoulder) Cabinessence Feel Flows While I've long known of The Beach Boys, I've only been really learning more about them within the last year or so. My partner was surprised when I asked for some BB CDs for my birthday as she usually hears me listening to Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, or Frank Zappa. Then when I was playing one of the CDs she bought me she was looking at me with a mystified expression and asked "This is the Beach Boys?" Title: Re: Cool Beach Boys Songs Post by: Zach95 on June 22, 2012, 08:56:16 AM The songs I think of as more or less cool and modern-sounding (alphabetically): All I Wanna Do California Do You Wanna Dance Feel Flows Gettin' Hungry Here She Comes I Get Around Island Girl It's OK The Letter Most of PS Pitter Patter Sail on, Sailor Santa Ana Winds Slip on Through Solar System Strange Things Happen This Whole World Wild Honey Wipe Out That's 20 in total. Wipe Out is not, by any stretch of the imagination, "cool" or "hip". Simply because it is rap, does not mean that it is modern or cool. It's particularly awful rap, I mean, have you listened to those lyrics? |
