Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death in the past. I LOVE the sound of this record. Great vintage sounding track. Enthusiastic vocal from Brian. Lots of what sounds like REAL (not digital) reverb. THIS is what a BW record needs to sound like in 2011 and beyond, as opposed to the polished, almost too-clean productions we've been hearing the past few years. IMHO. What year was this recorded? Did Andy Paley produce this? Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: kirt on August 10, 2011, 10:52:18 AM Very Cool! I had never heard that before ,thanks!

Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: smile-holland on August 10, 2011, 12:28:51 PM Rodney On The Roq was Bian's contribution to the Mayor of the Sunset Strip soundtrack album that accompanied the 2003 documentary with the same title.

I hear lots of Brians on here, but who else is singing? Is that Jeff on falsetto near the end? And did Brian write everything? It's very Beach Boys and very cool.
Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: Peter Reum on August 10, 2011, 02:06:21 PM If Brian`s so-called rock and roll album sounded like this, I`d love it!
Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: Amy B. on August 10, 2011, 02:08:57 PM Oh, duh. I completely ignored the link right above my post. Thanks for the info.
Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: 37!ws on August 10, 2011, 02:09:46 PM Amy -- Jeff is on it, as is Andy Paley. Judging by the sound of it, Paley probably did most of the work.

BW sounds at home on recordings like this. I wonder what BW himself thinks about that record. Damnit, someone bring Paley back into the loop! :afro Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: 18thofMay on August 10, 2011, 04:34:48 PM I really love it!! And I had never heard it..wow

Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: Matt H on August 11, 2011, 06:15:29 PM When I saw BW in Kansas City in 2001, I asked Darian about the song, and he turned to Paley and said, "that's all him." I think it was the theme song to Rodney's radio show at the time, and was not just for the movie.

I think it was the theme song to Rodney's radio show at the time, and was not just for the movie. That's cool. So let me get this straight. Brother of ours here posts a link and we all show enthusiasm thinking that Brian wrote it or at least had a big hand in it and thought what a groovy thing it was. So we enjoy it but now that we think it's Andy Paley OH BIG DUMB WRESTLER it's lame? f*** no! This song IS kind of cool. It's got a 1990s Brian Wilson playing for a hip new crowd feel to it. Showing off his old sound but in a light hearted laid back effortless cool way. Written and produced by Brian or Andy, it's a decent little thing. The vocals get kjind of trippy. I don;t know m,they make me sqhurm, Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on August 11, 2011, 07:55:28 PM Quote That's cool. So let me get this straight. Please don't put words in his mouth. Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: RONDEMON on August 12, 2011, 07:11:44 AM It sounds great. Especially the production and playing. The vocals sound good and roomy like classic BBs and it's definitely not over-polished like BW's solo records.

Paley was never a wrestler, and I don't see people changing their minds now that they know he's responsible for it. Listening again, it's more Brian Wilson than Brian Wilson, meaning it has sounds (like the surf guitar) that people associate with him but that he didn't really use all that much. So it makes sense that it's not him but someone who sounds like him. But I love it, regardless of who did it. Had this track on loop for the past half hour. Gotta be my favorite Brian lead from his solo years. I never thought I'd use "swag" and "Brian Wilson" in the same sentence, but he absolutely swags the hell out of this vocal. The 1st verse is so freakin ace. It was recorded sometime in 2002-03, I believe. So does that make this the final collab between BW & Paley? Title: Re: Rodney On The Roq Post by: 37!ws on December 16, 2013, 08:45:29 PM BUMP. Don't know, but I definitely heard it in March 2001 when Foskett played it off a CD at a private concert. And as a prior post mentioned, it was the theme song for Rodney Bingenheimer's radio show. According to Jeff, Rodney had been seeking out a theme song for years and wasn't happy with anything until he got what he commissioned from Brian. It wasn't meant to be a whole song from start to finish -- the way it was recorded it was meant to be edited into several shorter bits that Rodney would use for various parts of his show -- intro, outtro, going out to breaks, coming back from breaks, etc. I forgot who all was on it, but Jeff said he was on it as well as Andy Paley. |
