Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death in the past. I LOVE the sound of this record. Great vintage sounding track. Enthusiastic vocal from Brian. Lots of what sounds like REAL (not digital) reverb. THIS is what a BW record needs to sound like in 2011 and beyond, as opposed to the polished, almost too-clean productions we've been hearing the past few years. IMHO.
What year was this recorded? Did Andy Paley produce this?

It was recorded sometime in 2002-03, I believe.

Rodney On The Roq was Bian's contribution to the Mayor of the Sunset Strip soundtrack album that accompanied the 2003 documentary with the same title.

I'd like to know more about this too. I hear lots of Brians on here, but who else is singing? Is that Jeff on falsetto near the end? And did Brian write everything? It's very Beach Boys and very cool.

If Brian`s so-called rock and roll album sounded like this, I`d love it!

Amy -- Jeff is on it, as is Andy Paley. Judging by the sound of it, Paley probably did most of the work.

Man, imagine that?? BW sounds at home on recordings like this. I wonder what BW himself thinks about that record.
Damnit, someone bring Paley back into the loop!

When I saw BW in Kansas City in 2001, I asked Darian about the song, and he turned to Paley and said, "that's all him." I think it was the theme song to Rodney's radio show at the time, and was not just for the movie.

That's cool. So let me get this straight. Brother of ours here posts a link and we all show enthusiasm thinking that Brian wrote it or at least had a big hand in it and thought what a groovy thing it was. So we enjoy it but now that we think it's Andy Paley OH BIG DUMB WRESTLER it's lame? f*** no!
This song IS kind of cool. It's got a 1990s Brian Wilson playing for a hip new crowd feel to it. Showing off his old sound but in a light hearted laid back effortless cool way. Written and produced by Brian or Andy, it's a decent little thing. The vocals get kjind of trippy. I don;t know m,they make me sqhurm,

1) Joe Thomas was the wrestler, NOT Paley.
2) If you re-read Parks Asher's post, he did not say it was lame at all. Please don't put words in his mouth.

Regardless of who said what, the general consensus seems to be Joe Thomas=lame, Andy Paley=awesome.

True, I like the song... I have no idea if Paley wrote most of the song or not, got the impression that Brian recorded with Paley, that's all.

It sounds great. Especially the production and playing. The vocals sound good and roomy like classic BBs and it's definitely not over-polished like BW's solo records.

Paley was never a wrestler, and I don't see people changing their minds now that they know he's responsible for it. Listening again, it's more Brian Wilson than Brian Wilson, meaning it has sounds (like the surf guitar) that people associate with him but that he didn't really use all that much. So it makes sense that it's not him but someone who sounds like him. But I love it, regardless of who did it.

I think you have your facts mistaken. Andy Paley was the wrestler. Joe Thomas was the orange.
