Good idea to put this in its own thread. Dead exciting if it's true. I would imagine the proof will be if there is more news about this date in the next few days. Fingers crossed! ...

As I said on the other thread... great to have a date at last. **IF** this is true, of course!

Could we perhaps move speculation about the set and its contents to THIS thread, and leave all the drug chat in the other thread? Not to be prissy about it, because I'm passingly familiar with the concept of an altered state myself... but I'd really like to talk about the contents of the SMiLE Sessions box set in a thread somewhere. And not have it keep getting mixed up with drugs (as it were).

For those that argue that one and t'other topic are inseparable, I see where you're coming from, and I have some sympathy with that point of view. But I'm not trying to stop that discussion. You can carry right on discussing it in the other thread as before.

Whatch'all reckon?

I think the problem was that we did write pages of discussion about the contents of the set on the previous thread - unfortunately, speculation can only whet the appetite for so long.

Two issues on the announcement:

- I raised the interesing idea that Mike Love might have consented to using BWPS as the template for the 'finished' SMiLE on the box and probably the 2-CD set. Isn't that intriguing, if it's true?

- what would be the 'additional work' that messrs. Linett and Boyd had to do to make the SS SMiLE experience more of a whole?

Interesting..

I'm supposed to see the Beach Boys in concert on 12.07.   Let's see if Mike mentions anything about SMiLE that night :D

Umh.. if I meet them after the show I should probably ask them something about the release.

It's certainly an interesting point. Personally I'd imagine Brian, Mike and Al probably have a billion other things they'd rather do than sequence Smile and all welcome the convenience of using Brian and VDP's 2003 sequence: the path of least resistance an' all that.

You could, um, take the SS box with you, and ask Mike to sign each item therein. Wouldn't it be nice?

That, and unless in '67 Brian told Mike the exact sequencing of SMiLE I doubt Mike would have much to contribute to in that area.

Yes, probably better to take your second set with you to be signed by Mike and Bruce, and leave the Sealed Set at home, where it belongs

You got a safe? Or will you buy one especially for the SS box? Complete with humidor and mold desinfectant dispenser?

I'll just buy it the day of release. I'd hate to have a situation where I have an order pending and everyone else is already listening as I wait for the package to arrive.

I'm very excited for this release, more for the "unheard" material and possibly new photos than anything else.

Same here. I am blessed with two excellent, active record retailers. I am sure that I'll just have to hint, come release date, like: please keep one aside for me (or two, depending on my cash flow situation...).

"The Smile Sessions will be available as a standard double CD or download and as an elaborate deluxe box set which will include four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book written by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore."

Unless Dom's seriously expanded his on his essay (or it's printed about 50 words to the page), that last part isn't entirely accurate.

You are some spoilt brat, Sir! I expected it to see the light of day around October (like AGD remarked, what with the Grammys). July is soon in my book.

BTW: although I'll get it anyway, I am quite curious about the retail price. Also that of the 2 disk version. If sales are to be on a reasonable level, the latter should go at midprice, methinks.

It does seem to be a long time, but once we get the tracklist hopefully we'll have enough to salivate over to pass a lot of the time.

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere around here that I can rely on to have this on release day, so Amazon pre-order it is.  Just clicking the "Place Order" button will be quite the rush I'd expect!

Looks like it might be time for me to hold up them hands and say "wrong" about October. Maybe.

As for the 2CD, I'd imagine standard price for a double set.  The retail for the box is dependent on the contents.

As tempted as I would be to pre-order from Amazon, I'm in the same camp as the previous poster who worried about receiving it on time.  With my luck, that would be the one time where Amazon takes 2-3 weeks to get it to me, and in a chewed up condition which means I'll get to send it back for a replacement.  I'm looking at you, Miles Davis Complete Columbia Collection...

Thankfully, I have a local record store which I think I can count on.   And there's always Amoeba in Hollywood.

At one time I'd have just gone to Best Buy, but I can almost predict how the exchange will go:

Me:  So, I'm looking for SMiLE by the Beach Boys, but I can't find it anywhere on the shelf.

BB Employee:  Uh, you're looking to smile?

Me: No, I'm looking for a copy of SMiLE by the Beach Boys.

BB Employee:  Uh, I don't understand what you're looking for.

Me: (more frustrated)  I'm looking for a copy of the album "SMiLE" by the group, "The Beach Boys."  Today is the release date.  Do you have it?

BB Employee:  Uh, who are the Beach Boys?  Wait a minute, didn't they do like, that song Kokomo?  Why would you want an album by them?

Me:  (ready to kill said employee) It's actually a box set.

BB Employee:  So you're looking for a box set of Kokomo songs?

Me:  Look, do you have it or not?

Employee furiously tries looking in the computer.

BB Employee:  Uh, I guess you're right...Today is the release date.  But we don't have any.   Why don't you just go to I-tunes and download it?  Nobody listens to CD's anymore.

But one night he came over to my house pretty loaded and told me almost non-stop that Pet sounds, Today!, and good vibrations were total sh*t and i was a moron for liking them. I finally lost my temper and said for him to get the foder out of my house if you are going to insult me and my favorite band. My dad also called them a little boys choir and fell asleep when i tried to show him side two of Today!

In my first student year, I was hopelessly shy. And punk was all over the place. So, whenever fellow students asked me what my favourite music was, I meekly said: the Beach Boys, and, without giving the other party time for derisory comments, I continued: but, apart from the commercial hits the BBs made such wonderful and much less market-targeted music, it's a shame that that music is so little known, it's very progressive...

...what humility! Nowadays I don't feel the slightest need to defend my heroes this way. Of course it helps that I don't care a flying f*** about all kinds of pretentious countercultural icons any more. There are many stupid poseurs, but there's only one Beach Boys.

i don't put up with those  pretentious countercultural icons and people like my "friend" and Dad who think music before the late 1960s "counterculture" was lame and don't even try to listen to the Beach Boys with an open mind. People think i am crazy for liking the beach boys, phil spector's various groups, and Jan and Dean but I don't take that crap because,  come July 12, 2011, Smile Sessions will be out and playing on my ipod, making dealing with all the hate worthwhile because you just can't beat the timeless music of the Beach Boys.

I will likely pre-order the box set from amazon but having done this in the past (using the free shipping option) it always arrives well after the street date, and I have to go and buy it in the store anyway.

Who am I kidding, I'll do what I do any time a major BB/BW release comes out.  I will buy MULTIPLE copies in EVERY format and then cap it off by buying promo copies off ebay.  And, like in recent years, I will also buy it off itunes at midnight just so I can hear it 8 or 9 hours earlier than waiting for the physical stores to open.  Then, of course, I will purchase the physical product 8 or 9 hours later then go home delete the 256kps mp3s and then rip the cds (at 320kps)  for future listening, and then go and listen to the vinyl on my hi-fi set up.

Yes, I am aware I have a problem (many problems actually).  I am crazed fan and collector, and I can't help myself.

No worries, just bring the box set with you on your honeymoon and use it to kill the time. I'm sure she'll love that.

Me, I already told my boss I'm taking the day off when this behemoth is released. No way I'm ordering online; I MUST have it on day of release. My plan is to order it through a local record store (the mighty Sound Garden here in Baltimore) and drive there when doors open. Will probably buy the 2-disc version as well, depending on content/packaging.

At a design house in Burbank I used to work at, we had a young arrogant little whippersnapper who was the golden boy designer of the bunch, and therefore felt his opinion held sway over anything and everyone.

One time, he deliberately played the "Kokomo" parody "Cameltoe" loudly; he kept snickering and making little asides to his cubicle-mates and looking my direction, knowing I was a BB fan, trying to take the piss...

Little did he know he was just making a jackass of himself by thinking I was a Kokomo fan! There would be no point explaining to him what being a Brian Wilsonite is...

Actually we're playing "Our Sweet Love" at the wedding. She's a fan as well which makes it easier to explain why I need THAT box set so badly. We've been together for almost 12 years and have a 10 year old son. She's cool with my BB obsession.  ;)

I finally lost my temper and said for him to get the foder out of my house if you are going to insult me and my favorite band. My dad also called them a little boys choir and fell asleep when i tried to show him side two of Today!

That's annoying and rude...all well. Some people can't hear and appreciate the awesomeness of these guys. Their loss.

Oh, so it's not just my local Best Buy where the employees seem to be clueless?  Sheesh, I can just imagine what would happen if I tried to score a boxed set there:

Me: Ok, one more time.....it's the Beach Boys SMiLE sessions boxed set [I'm speaking very slowly here.  I have to.]  It contains the music on both cds and vinyl.

BB: Oh, vinyl?  Like in vinyl siding?  You need to go down to Home Depot then.

Me: No, dipstick, I'm talking about Lps.  Lps!!!!

BB: Oh, you mean like L.P. siding?  That pressboard stuff?  That would be Home Depot again.

Me:  Why do you work HERE and not at HOME DEPOT?

BB:  I really don't know anything about building materials.  I'm more about music and entertainment.

Me:  **** this!  Why the **** did I ever come in here in the first ****ing place!!!!   ****! ****!!!!! ****!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting. One of my other favourites and another ex-Capitol band, Megadeth has a 5CD 3LP box set coming out on the same day. Maybe that is Capitol's designated deluxe box-set day. For those who share the same polarised taste in music as myself.... here is the amazon pre-order  (http://www.amazon.com/Peace-Sells-Whos-Buying-Deluxe/dp/B004WN96ME/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IS64F049XPXFV&colid=1CBSYZ2U4L451)

I'm getting married on July 9th. Too soon, push the release date back a month!

Actually we're playing "Our Sweet Love" at the wedding. She's a fan as well which makes it easier to explain why I need THAT box set so badly. We've been together for almost 12 years and have a 10 year old son. She's cool with my BB obsession.  ;)

Put it on your list of wedding gifts :P I feel like congratulations are in order, Roger!

Hi guys, I'm new to the board here.

I used to go to Best Buy as well for new releases and I would not only get the same clueless employees, but I used to post "skits" like this on other message boards that were the true re-inactments of what happened.  It's one of the things that makes me yearn for the old record stores that I used to frequent in the 80's and 90's.  I can't even remember the last CD I bought in a store.  Oh wait... the Beatles remasters in 2009!

As for July 12th, my girlfriend still wants to know what I want for my birthday which was April 4th.  I guess the SMiLE box will work for me.

Nearly the same thing happened to me with purchasing BWRG....only the guy said "the computer says it's in stock, but we can't find it in the stock-room,"

The people who work at these stores are idiots....I mean, complete idiots. Back when Circuit City was still around: I was looking for a best of Cream album...after 30 minutes of searching through their CD section (which looked like ground zero at Hiroshima) a salesman comes up and asks if I need help....I tell him I'm looking for where Cream would be stocked - and the guy looked at me like I was actually talking about the dairy product. No clue who Cream was.
____

I've never had a problem with Amazon shipping (and I buy from there constantly) - so the odds are probably very good that I'll receive the boxset 2-3 weeks late damaged beyond repair.

It's strange to see a boot listed on Amazon, but it happens occasionally, and clearly did in that case.  Through the Amazon marketplace feature, it's possible for independent sellers to list stuff like that occasionally.  Of course, it's removed if noticed by any of the powers that be.

When I was about 17 I bought the Live at the Roxy CD. As I handed it over to the even younger girl at the counter, she looked at me weird and said...
"Is this for, um, your dad or something?".

"Oh"
"Yeah"
"Really?"
"Yeah"

"The Smile Sessions will be available as a standard double CD or download and as an elaborate deluxe box set which will include four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book written by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore."

Unless Dom's seriously expanded his on his essay (or it's printed about 50 words to the page), that last part isn't entirely accurate.

The book includes writing by Alan Boyd and Craig Slowinski too. This was covered on MArch 11 on Beach Boys Examiner. http://www.examiner.com/beach-boys-in-national/the-smile-sessions-box-set-to-see-release-this-summer

I would have thought the inclusion of "Three Blind Mice" would have alerted anyone here to the reality of this 'release'.  ;D

What scared me more was the phrase "mono and stereo"...for released albums whose mixes differ that would be just fine, but if it were done for Smile that would seem like a way to fill up another disc with the same material.

My apologies friends, my Smile knowledge is still in its infancy.

So AGD, with your inside knowledge, perhaps you can tell us if the "Smile" box release has gone into limbo.

Has Capitol put out any statement saying it's been put on hold, shelved or otherwise canned ?  Not that I'm aware of.  ;D

Just because we're not being spoonfed information doesn't mean nothing's happening. Maybe they've had to adjust the configuration and track listing for some reason or another. Maybe no-one's telling Alan more that he needs to know.  I still think 7/12/11 is being optimistic, purely on logistical grounds, but as far as I'm aware, the project's still good to go.

Regarding the "not being spoonfed information" bit, I believe Beach Boys Central is a prime example of that. :)

That's not even coming soon last time I checked, it's just gone.

Edit.

It actually is still up, was down for a while though
