This is probably the toughest album for me to vote things off. There are little things that make me love every since track.

That being said my vote for least favorite goes to Roller Skating Child. It feels the most thrown together of all the songs.

Love You is going to be another toughie, but I could do without 'Love Is A Woman'.

Love Is a Woman, the one song that just doesn't explode into some mad burst of creativity.  It has some of the album's elements, but comes off more as lounge-singer cheese.  I always find that the final tracks on 15 Big Ones and Love You should be switched because Just Once in My Life has the synth-drenched transcendence needed to end the album.

This is tough already. I'll say Let's Put Our Hearts Together.

I have disagree with all of you who are voting for Love Is A Woman (my favorite on this album).

To me that is the song that brings it all together. I hated love you until one day I was listening to Love Is A Woman with it's mocking saxophones and suddenly I GOT Love You. I understood it. I laughed harder than I had laughed all decade. I can't see how you can get Love You and vote off the punchline of the whole album.

agreed. as much as Brian loves Ding Dang, it's just a short repeating riff.

it looks like Love is a Woman is going to be first to go and that's just a f*cking shame. it's one of Brian's most heartfelt pieces from this period (or any period for that matter)

I'm voting for "Good Time". I HATE, HATE, HATE it on Love You, and it's really kind of a mess of a production, though the horn parts have touches of genius.

"Ding Dang" is my dark horse to take this contest. Sure, it's like a minute long, but what a minute...

Let's Put Our Hearts Together has one of those amazing chord progressions that only Brian can come up with.

"Let's Put Our Hearts Together" is structurally amazing, but the singing is pretty atrocious. Marilyn wasn't at her best there.

I think it's an absolutely mesmerizing song.

Airplane's a good song but Mike's beyond-nasal vocal really kills it for me.

Mike's delivery is unusual on the track, pretty nasal but not nearly as bad as some other songs, I feel it works on "Airplane"

Forget Mike though, it's the ending that makes that song an absolute masterpiece for me, Carl and Brian going back and forth, when call screams "I can't wait", I LOVE that song.

I've been listening to it incessantly lately.

Let's Put Our Hearts Together should've been saved for the debut of Brian's Matchpoint voice.

Lyrics are amazing too. Definitely some of Brian's best.

I think if Brian only played this on SNL and left it off the album, I still wouldn't be intrigued about it if it remained unreleased as a studio cut...as opposed to the intrigue I get with other unreleased tunes: Lazy Lizzie, That Special Feeling, Rollin Up to Heaven, First Love, Carry Me Home, etc.

That being said my vote for least favorite goes to Roller Skating Child. It feels the most thrown together of all the songs.

I like some of the instrumentation during the second verse, but that's about it. Very average singing from Brain and his missus.

i cant friggin stand solar system  >:(  so......

Whilst they don't bother me personally, I imagine a lot of people have difficulty getting passed the lyrics (they are, after all, singing about 'makin' sweet love' to a child)... Amazing melody though.

I think we're supposed to infer that both the narrator and the "child" are teenagers. I don't get why people can't suspend their disbelief here. Randy Newman sings from the viewpoint of a slave trader, and Mick Jagger from the viewpoint of Satan, so why can't the Beach Boys sing from the viewpoint of high schoolers? Also, incidentally I suspect sometimes when The Beach Boys use the phrase "make love" they're using it in the old fashioned non-sexual sense. If not, "Don't Worry Baby" is quite racy for 1964.

Even if all of that is accepted, they are still godwful lyrics.

Yeah, they are, but not necessarily morally wrong/evil. There's a distinction.

Sure, when you consider them alongside Brian`s Hey Little Tomboy and Lazy Lizzie though they don`t look quite as innocent as you suggest...

It's a lovely-sounding song, and I find the lyrics plain hysterical, making for a wild juxtaposition. They sound like an elementary school kid improvising his way through a book report (have to work in something about each of the planets...er...hmmm...). I lose it every time Brian gets to the Mars rhyme.   :lol

You guys are psychos for voting off LPOHT over I Wanna Pick You Up, Solar System and Ding Dang. I mean, vocals aside it's one of the best written songs on the album!

"Ding Dang"    Shows how much love this record gets for it to hang in so long.  "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" was a favorite of mine too.  I love the vocals.

re Let's Put Our Heart's Together - anyone else noticed how Brian's 'old' voice seems to slip through right at the end of the song? It's quite tragic once you notice it, as it's a sad reminder of what was and what now is.

Can't believe Let's Put Our Hearts Together went so soon.

I really want to vote Good Time off as it sticks out too much for me, despite being a good song. However, tactically I think Ding Dang will be a better vote.

Especially when he sings "togetherrrr"

you're right. that last "together you and I" is classic Brian.

his voice wasn't shot, for the most part he chose to sing that way. he sounds clear as a bell on Matchpoint recorded a year later.

I've always been blown away by how he hits that final "I" that finishes the song. He sings just it perfectly.

seriously what a great song. is it mostly Marilyn's singing that makes some of you dislike LPOHT so much?

I've been listening to that final line, "together you and I", for 37 years now. And every time I hear it, I still wish/expect someone (whoever?) to come in on the "talkback" saying, "Great ending, Brian, let's try another one from the top..." :-D

Always thought Marilyn was an underrated singer. I really like her voice. I think I like every lead vocal she ever did. Can't really think of a clunker...

I do really like LPOHT, but the reason I decided to vote for it so early is because of Marilyn's half-assed vocals. I feel the same way towards It's Over Now.

When I want to listen to LPOHT, I almost always end up listening to the fantastic piano demo that appears on the Brian Loves You bootleg.

No, it doesn't. Listen closely and it sounds like late 70s Brian trying to sound smooth. His voice had changed.

It wasn't perfect, but it could have been a good starting point for vocal rehabilitation. With proper diet, continued vocal training and controlled drug use, I believe he'd have probably been able to sound close to how he did on the 1974 California Feeling demo.

And since the conversation has continued to discuss Let's Put Our Hearts Together, I think the part that really sells me on it is the wordless backing vocal by what sounds like Mike.  Add an old-school Brian voice to the song and it's pure bliss.

Most of Love You's lyrics are endearingly daft - these ones are largely just very bad indeed however... And Dennis sounds embarrassed. To think that he was singing this, then going off and working on the likes of River Song and Thoughts of You. The Beach Boys all too often let personal problems cloud their artistic/critical judgements - sometimes it's genuinely painful to look back on.

To those voting off "I Wanna Pick You Up", I advise you to take note of that sweet little countermelody running behind the second verse, also, that tag has gotta be the last instance of Mike really laying down some impressive bass vox.


I'm gonna reluctantly shoot down "Mona" this round. It has a great lead by Denny and terrific energy throughout, but the balance of simplicity to genius hangs a little too far to the simple for my liking - it's just four basic chords ad infinitum. Could have perhaps benefited from a middle eight or something.

So: Steamboat = bad, Mona = brilliant? Each to their own. Gee we're a versatile bunch...

Agree, Quzi.  I love that countermelody on the second verse of IWPYU.  And many years ago, when I bought the sheet music and played it on the piano, I really heard the lovely chord structure and the beautiful, gentle chorus melody.  I'm not as fond of the tag so I once did a mix that repeated and faded out the chorus.  

And I agree with your assessment of the repetitious Mona, which gets my vote this round.  So..

The "going to sleep" vocals are lovely but I guess I'd rather not hear the word "butt" in a Beach Boys song.

This times a thousand. Great melody and excellent lyrics. Loved it from the first listen, and it's well-performed. Denny did a great job on the lead vocals, and I especially love the Phil Spector part.

'Disco disco disco tech moma... how's about a movie, won't it be groovy..." - bad lyrics.

It's still catchy as hell. I can play this song over and over again on a loop for a long time without getting sick of it. At least Mona isn't boring as hell and makes you wanna sleep

It reads more like purple prose than poetry to me. Simple and direct any day of the week.

I know Mona is a dumb song but at least it's dumb in a good way. It's not in bad taste, like Hey Little Tomboy, for instance.

I honestly think extended song lengths, jamming, and Jack Rieley's "progressive" lyrics are in worst taste than anything on Love You.

The one that kicks in after the sudden, unexpected piano break just prior to a return of the beautifully sung, musically inventive chorus? Personally I like it... Love You is by far one of their best records. It was the last time Brian really captured what he was feeling (and at his best he could do better than anyone else by far). Its such such such a great record and so atmospheric and weird and perfect in its own way, and I don't get why a lot of people don't seem to like it. I mean I don't wanna put anyone down or judge em, but if it's because of the production that sucks. I don't think the core magic of Brian was ever about the production, it was about his emotional honesty and his music. And I think Love You is really raw honesty. Anyways, yeah, let's hear it for Love You!

it seems to me what people dislike most are the corny lyrics and Brian's vocals. i suppose some are turned off by the production as well... Pet Sounds it ain't! but it's Brian through and through. goofy subject matter or not (which i love), there's some great songwriting and arranging going on.

Roller Skating Child is a good example. if the lyrics weren't so godawful i would really regret voting if off

I'm actually going to go with I'll Bet He's Nice, even though at one point it might have made my top on this album.  They're all splendid and interesting, but this is the only one that features croaky lead vocals.  Dennis and Brian make it work, but all other things being equal, I'll go with smooth Carl or younger Brian.

Let Us Go on This Way--great opening track that sets the stage for a new listening experience--prepares you to be immersed in the glory that is Love You
The Night Was So Young--such a smooth vocal and a sweet song that fits in with the Love You motif
I'll Bet He's Nice--a personal fave because it features all 3 Wilsons and I like the lyrics
Good Time--best sounding track and my true favorite, but it is rather "light and insignificant," and thus it garners my vote--so yes I am voting for my favorite track to NOT make the finals

I think it's a great song, as are all of them on Love You (some are better than others, though), but it really just doesn't fit on Love You. Maybe it would've replaced Student Demonstration Time on Surf's Up in an alternate universe.

The Night Was So Young is good, but it also kind of puts me to sleep.
I love Let It Go On This Way. Classic Brian. I could easily have voted this number one. But this is one album where my favorites fluctuate A LOT.

There is no doubt what my favorite song is from Love You:

"I'll Bet He's Nice" - that bridge knocks me out.

The Night Was So Young- a really wonderful song.

Difficult choice for me between "The Night Was So Young" and "I'll Bet He's Nice," but I am going to go with "The Night Was So Young"

Of the remaining tracks I'll Bet He's Nice would be a very close second for me. I love the way the bridge takes off unexpectedly, and killer vocals from Carl there.

I was just saying Sumahama is the most likely to go first on the L.A. round. It is easily the worst off that album IMHO. Shortenin' Bread is one of the weaker songs, but not quite the worst. And the disco Here Comes The Night I can say the same thing.
