It certainly sounds intriguing: Brian Wilson wrapping his brain and voice around the work of George and Ira Gershwin, in a century-spanning confab of American pop savants.
Enticing concept, brilliant execution. "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" (Disney Pearl, ****, in stores Aug. 17) is a gorgeous take on the late composers' repertoire, said to be a boyhood staple for the eventual Beach Boys leader.
There's plenty to please the fanatics who follow Wilson's every move: the lush a cappella harmonies of "Rhapsody in Blue," which opens and closes the record; the vaguely haunting "Summertime"; the Beach Boys flourishes tucked into "I Got Rhythm" and "They Can't Take that Away from Me." In what might be a sublimely clever musical pun, "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' " is presented sans Wilson's voice.
It's no surprise these melodies captivated the youthful Wilson, and that wide-eyed wonder seems intact all these years later. He sounds as engaged in this as in anything he's done in recent memory.
The jazzy toned album features two previously unpublished Gershwin songs finished by Wilson.

Only 3 stars, damn.
Well it's a good idea to have all the reviews in one thread. Sure the mods can join both threads or delete one
