I paid $7 dollars for mine...lol.
the value of vinyl records is a very strange thing though.  I am a college student slowly building a collection of Beach Boy's vinyl, and I have a regular guy who sells records on campus once a month or so, and he always seeks out and brings beach boys records for my perusal, and spends a few minutes talking about the Boys with me (he's a smile fan...skeptical on the later works)...  And I usually pay around $4-7 dollars for them, occasionally as high as ten or as low as 3 - usually depending on how clean the vinyl is/how rare the record is perceived to be.  If i buy a couple he often gives me a bit of a discount too...

So the other day I went to a record fair, and I was very surprised to see copies of Beach Boys records from the 60s like Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile, etc., going for as high as 30 to 50 dollars!!  While other vendors had copies lurking in their bargain bins for 2 or 3!!  I picked up a beautiful copy of MIU for 1 dollar...and passed on Smiley Smile for 40, given that someone else has Wild Honey for 7!

so i suppose my question is, from someone perhaps more experienced in the market, how much are these records actually worth, in general?

To me, of course, they're worth a small fortune because they make me so happy to own and hold, and listen to and stare at!

The rarest Beach Boys vinyl is easily the Stack-O-Tracks 1968 pressing with the chords/lyrics booklet. I'm referring specifically to the 1968 pressing on Capitol; there's a Starline from the 1980s that's MUCH easier to find.

A copy of the 1968 Stack-O-Tracks pressing without the booklet set me back $40. The store I got it from had a copy with the booklet for $250. A copy of All Summer Long, mono, with "Don't Break Down" listed, was $15. A copy of a 1967 Smiley Smile pressing on Brother Records, mint condition, was $40. A promo copy of Slip On Through/This Whole World, mint condition, set me back $15. A promo copy of Wild Honey/Wind Chimes, mint, set me back $15. A promo copy of Friends/Little Bird set me back $15.

There's a reissue of Smiley Smile that I've heard about that has a Capitol rainbow label but isn't a Starline.

I think the most realistic answer is it's worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay. The last one sold on ebay (link below) went for $34.95, which is pretty consistent with the rates I was seeing when I was looking for one awhile back.  Too rich for my blood.  An unpopular opinion around here I'm sure, but I detest Holland (though I LOVE the ep).  I was only looking for one to replace my copy of Mount Vernon, which is scratched and very noisy.

Oooohhh, love sweeping statements like that !  Grin

Rarest BB 45 is probably the X 301 label pressing of "Surfin'" (although the promo copies of "Salt Lake City" pressed up for the local merchants association are almost as rare). Rarest album and vinyl is far and away the German pressing of Holland with "We Got Love" instead of "Sail On, Sailor": current thinking is that maybe 500 tops were pressed.

I thought that the Spirit Of Amerca US-promo 45 was even rarer than the Salt Lake City one.

Check out the Beach Boys Starline website, the place for pictures of many countries Beach Boys releases on 45.

Talking promos and stocks, the rarest 7 inch is the promo EP for Surfin Safari, with Ray Anthony on the other side; tho, the mailer for the Spirit Of America, " I Was There KFWB Day" is definitely not an easy find; but then, that's just the sleeve. the record shows up regularly on Ebay, too
The X 45 has been popping up fairly regularly on Ebay
I'd venture that the rarest LP is the Capitol promo that contains the ad for Smile; "We'll sell a million copies in January". I've only ever heard of one still existing.( tho, I hope that's not the case, I WANT one)

The LP that usually sells for the most money on Ebay  is a sealed mono copy of Pet Sounds; the most recent copy sold for $999; tho, bargains do happen, as I'm sure Lee can attest.
The highest BBs Ebay sale in recent memory, would be the Sealed copy of the Beach Boys Deluxe 3 Pack( 3 cassettes in an LP sized box) that sold for $1523.98

Pre-internet, SOT used to be thought of as the rarest LP, but now it's everywhere. There isn't a 1980's starline release, that I'm aware, but Capitol did re-release most, if not all, of their LPs with "colorband" labels, including SOT.

If you go to the media section, you'll find this "Smiley Smile reissue" in the thread on BBs Capitol Record Club LPs, which are  probably the most difficult to find of any of theirs.

Is there a dutch version with we got love and sail on sailor included?. I saw a copy of Holland 12 years ago in Eindhoven with "we got love" on it. Can't remember if SOS was included. Only worked out to be around 20 pounds but I didn't buy  Cry

If it's got "WGL" on it, it won't have "SO,S", and vice versa. However, in the former case, it will still say "Sail On, Sailor" on the label.

Yeah, I got Capitol Record Club discs mixed up with Starline discs. The Smiley Smile and Stack-O-Tracks I referred to were the Record Club releases. Apparently back in the 1980s the Record Club release was the easiest way to find Stack-O-Tracks on vinyl but IIRC it did not have the booklet.

I have the original 1968 SOT with the booklet. Didn't think it was that valuable as I posted here a few years ago to sell it and got no response.

If anyone is interested, drop me a line.  I'll send pics.

Isn't the Kenny And The Cadets single 'Barbie/What Is A Young Girl Made Of' incredibly rare and thus incredibly expensive?

Yup - but not technically a BB record.  Smiley

Unfortunately that "bargain" sealed mono Pet Sounds I bought had too many suspicious signs of being a resealed copy (wear underneath the shrink wrap in several key places), so I returned it for a refund.

There are a number of Beach Boys records wayyyy rarer than "Stack-O-Tracks".  In no particular order:

Capitol / Angel / Seraphim Salesman Sampler, January 1967 (with the SMiLE advert)
Beach Boys / Ray Anthony promo EP
Brian Wilson Introduces Selections from Beach Boys Concert promo EP
Excerpt from Beach Boys Party promo EP
Holland US test pressing or German withdrawn release with "We Got Love"
Ariola Germany 45 441 "Surfin' Safari" / "Luau"
Candix 301 "Surfin'" / "Luau" - Audition Copy
Caribou ZS9 9034 "School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell") / (same) (withdrawn promo; less than 10 copies known to exist)
Salt Lake City" / "Amusement Parks USA" promo
"Spirit of America" / "Boogie Woodie" promo
Beach Boys Deluxe Set 3-LP Capitol Record Club
Beach Boys Deluxe Set 3-LP MONO
Beach Boys Today! Jukebox EP (with cover and jukebox strips)
Shut Down vol. 2 Jukebox EP (with cover and jukebox strips)

As for the original poster's question, I'd put a still-sealed Holland with the EP AND the color picture sleeve at $40 US.  A white-label promo copy (detectable by turning the EP upside-down and shaking the record slightly out of its sleeve until you can see the label) would be around $50-$60.  Still-sealed copies from the end of the pressing run don't have the picture sleeve on the EP (just a generic sleeve), and are relatively easy to find, especially as cut-outs.  I bought 10 sealed cutout copies about 15 years ago for $4 each when a record store was phasing out all of its remaining vinyl.  These go for about $25.

I bought mine two years ago for $45, shipping to France included. $40 seems like a good estimate.
