According to his website, he played accordian on Kokomo. I was under the impression that his only link to the BB's was thru Brian but Brian wasn't involved in Kokomo. I wonder how he ended up on the track?

on an unrelated note, I just found a vinyl copy of his Tokyo Rose album at a local store for $3, it's actually really good!

It wasn't his only link, as he also played accordian on Lahaina Aloha off of SIP.

Van Dyke knew Terry Melcher, I believe. For Kokomo, Terry called asking for a steel drum player -- Van Dyke used them extensively on one of his albums -- and Van Dyke ended up playing in the session as well.

Does that mean VDP brought someone from the Trinidad Steel Band to play on "Kokomo"?

In fact Brian met Van Dyke for the first time at Terry Melcher's house back in the 60s

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Hum. I misremembered. Or perhaps it was in a different article. This is what the latest write up says:

Quote
After Melcher, McKenzie, Phillips, and Love had finished crafting the composition, another famous name got involved: Van Dyke Parks. Parks has been a close friend of Brian Wilson's since the '60s (he wrote the lyrics for Wilson's unreleased masterpiece, ''Smile''), and therefore hadn't worked with the Beach Boys for many years. He and Love didn't get along, but helping out ''was an attempt on my part to be civilized,'' Parks says dryly. ''Didn't work.''

Parks' case in point: Melcher invited him up to his house in Monterey, Calif., to help with the vocal arrangements. Parks chartered a small plane for the trip. On the way back, Love offered to share the plane and split the fare. ''He gave me his card,'' recalls Parks. ''When he got out of the plane, he INSISTED I call him to make sure he paid for the trip. So I called him the next day. He had changed his number.'' (Love denies this ever happened.)

None of this actually contradicts what I recalled, but it definitely doesn't tell that story. Hum. I'm almost positive I didn't make it up out of thin air.

Or, depending who you listen to, was taken to Brian's house by David Crosby.

No, Sir. He was invited to a hippie commune that called itself: Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Gifted, Black & Decker. At Marilyn Manson's Mansion On The Hill.

For some reason, I am not sure if some of these recent comments are documented
