Alright, for those fans of the compilation: Pet Smile, I was thinkin of ideas for putting together a 2nd vol. of Pet Sounds/Smile influenced songs from then and now.  For those unaware of Pet Smile and it's awesomeness, it's a variety of songs from the 60s to now with a Pet Sound or Smile  influence....ranging from First Class' Beach Baby to Eric Carmen's Never gonna Fall in Love again to the Wondermints' Tracey Hide.

I figured I'd start with a couple ideas:
-Fleet Foxes: He Doesn't Know Why (very pet sounds-esq...plus the goats in the studio in the music video)
-Beatles: Here There and Everywhere
-Van Dyke Parks/John C. Riley: Black Sheep (from Walk Hard soundtrack)
-Burt Bacharach: Nikki (very pet sounds)
-any Weezer ideas?

any other ideas?

I doubt there was ever an influence, but stuff like Fuga No. II and Caminhante Noturno from the second Os Mutantes album reek of a Smile-esque sound. Of course, Brian never wrote Arnaldo Baptista a letter asking him to reform Os Mutantes and open for the Beach Boys. Smiley

I feel love all around I can feel it shining down It lights up the day like the morning sun Reaching out and touching everyone I feel love all day long Like a promise, like a song And it's feeling good like I knew it would Everywhere I go, I feel love I feel love, yes I do I can feel it, so can you It's a rainbow washing rainy skies away Bringing back another sunny day I feel love everywhere It's like magic in the air Yeah, it's me loving you, loving everyone Everywhere I go I feel love Love, love, love's the answer Love's the only way Sunshine can come and go But love is here to stay

Make a cut of the track 'Good Laugh Mun' by the Flaming Groovies (album: 'Now!'), so that the last 30 seconds are preserved. Do a loop and also make a nice fade-in. That is as Pet Sounds as it gets.

Tim Hardin's "Baby Close Its Eyes".

Always reminds me of "Pet Sounds", especially the intro.

songs from the 60s to now with a Pet Sound or Smile  influence....ranging from First Class' Beach Baby

While "Beach Baby" does indeed have a definite BB influence, it owes exactly nothing to either Pet Sounds or Smile and precisely everything to All Summer Long and Summer DaysGrin

REM - "At My Most Beautiful"
Gary Griffin - "Geronimo Leaps"
Jeff Foskett - "Thru My Window", "Love Of My Own"
Fraternal Order Of The All - "Love Tonight"

Elvis Costello: 'The Other Side Of Summer'

...or Costello's "Favorite Hour" (from BRUTAL YOUTH) which the singer claimed was his attempt to write a song like "Surf's Up".

(a daring contribution)

Tom Verlaine: 'The Scientist Writes A Letter' (from 'Flash Light'). I get shivers every time, it's so hauntingly beautiful. Always reminds me of 'Surf's Up'. But I might be mistaken by thinking that everyone else has the same associations.

Listen for yourselves.

AGD sez:  While "Beach Baby" does indeed have a definite BB influence, it owes exactly nothing to either Pet Sounds or Smile and precisely everything to All Summer Long and Summer Days.

Gotta disagree--there's a french horn line near the end that is a very obvious ripoff of the one from "God Only Knows"--so that's a hair less than exactly nothing.  Otherwise, yeah, I agree.

I agree AGD, but it was the only thing I could think of that early in the morning, a couple bowls later ( Smokin)

Also, I'm thinking that cut of Love Tonight is actually on Pet Smile, great song btw.

Actually it's a riff from Sibelius' 5th symphony, the same one that Strawberry Switchblade used for their 1984 hit "Since Yesterday".  Grin

I admit to having no idea what's on volume 1, but it seems that a few obvious choices might be 1) approximately half of Pet Soul by Splitsville (I'll let you guess which half) and 2) plenty of Apples in Stereo's Her Wallpaper Reverie.

"Birdhouse In Your Soul"- They Might Be Giants (deliberate, specific homage)
"Be Nice To Me"- Todd Rundgren
"Pale And Precious"- Dukes Of Stratospheare (deliberate, specific homage)
"Let's Pretend"- The Raspberries
"Ram On"- Paul McCartney (Maybe more of a Friends influence, really)
"Take A Run At The Sun"- J. Mascis (deliberate, specific homage)
"God Give Me Strength"- Elvis Costello, Burt Bacharach (deliberate, specific homage)

The horns at the ending of 'Beach Baby' are clearly playing a melody from 'Let's Go To San Francisco' by The Flower Pot Men - a song that lead singer Tony Burrows and songwriter John Carter had previously collaborated on.
