Interesting that Al is "hoping" for a Labor Day release to his album.  I wonder if that means he's in negotiations with a label or has decided to put it out himself (which really, he probably should have done from the start).

Oh good, I'm glad there may be more guest stars to add to that album. It was lacking in a) covers and b) guest stars. That's probably what prevented it from being released up till now.

Wow shocker that Rolling Stone is even paying any mind to anything the Beach Boys are doing. Seems that magazine has rarely anything good to say about them....

Jann Wenner was just a "prophet" with too much to say in 1967. I would say Rolling Stone's simmered down towards the band since at least 1970 - they were writing raves about the new albums at the time, and of course, the Band of the Year award to the BBs in '74 when they had no new album out to promote. Just on the strength of the stage show and the Endless Summer phenomenon. Of course, we probably would have liked to have seen them give the band the award in 1973 based on the fact that 1973 was the last true gasp, coming off the heels of eight excellent LPs since the band began the "trek through the desert" as David Leaf so eloquently put it. But he also hates The Beach Boys Love You so whadda we know anyway?

It doesn't fit his idea of Brian Wilson the "creative genius." It doesn't fit mine either, but the genius of The Beach Boys Love You is in its artlessness. I mean really...pretty much the only instruments are that roller-rink organ, Moog synthesizer, a bass/snare drum combination, and the occasional guitar noodle.

Jason was referring to David Leaf.  Leaf's taste in Brian's music is Pet Sounds/SMiLE. Maybe the ballad side of Today. He likes Arty Brian and not Sloppy Brian.

I think that's cool he listens to some newer music and actually likes it. The really good bands are pretty rare these days, but they're definitely out there. Just not in the top 40 or anything, that stuff is just crap, IMHO.

Saw the Fleet Foxes at Hyde Park last weekend  - they were exceptional, far-better sounding live on stage than I've heard them in session on radio.

They've frequently been cited as heavily influenced by the BBs but the one track that I reckon most typifies that influence has to be You're Welcome.

No, but now that it's been mentioned, "You're Welcome" really does sound a lot like the Fleet Foxes, or rather the other way around. The swirling harmonies, offbeat folksy backing, and the BIG Phil Spector is God and Brian is His Jesus drum sound. Why didn't we get a whole album like this?

Yes. Listen to "White Winter Hymnal" and then "You're Welcome". I realize the word folksy may have been misleading, because that immediately conjures up the image of someone wearing dusty overalls and a plaid shirt while fiddling a banjo on a rickety front porch as a toothpick dangles carelessly from their mouth, the sun setting majestic and tall reed grass waving a friendly hello in the warm southernly winds, but it can be applied to a wide variety of music.
