Brian Wilson brings Sun to London
10:58 | Friday July 3, 2009

By Ben Cardew

Brian Wilson last night played a secret gig at a London private members club to mark the release of a new book of illustrations based around his recent album That Lucky Old Sun.

The former Beach Boy played an eight-song acoustic set backed by three members of his band, which included Beach Boys classics and tracks from the new album.

The book, published by Genesis Publications, is billed as a collaboration between Wilson and renowned British artist Sir Peter Blake. It comprises a series of original collages draw their inspiration from That Lucky Old Sun.

The cloth-bound, hand-numbered book is signed by both Wilson and Blake and also includes a historical essay and interview with Wilson by music journalist and author Harvey Kubernik, in which he speaks about the inspirations for the album.

Also featured in the portfolio are Wilson’s hand-written sheet music and lyrics to the track Midnight’s Another Day reproduced in facsimile, an original laminate VIP pass from the live performance of That Lucky Old Sun and a CD pressing of the album.

The event took place at 1 Alfred Place in central London, where pictures from the book were on display.

What I've seen of the Blake prints didn't really impress me - plus do we really need another CD of TLOS?  I've bought other Genesis books but this one I'm going to pass on.  Maybe when Andrew gets his copy and tells us how great it is, I'll be more tempted to make the plunge.  Too bad they couldn't have included a live TLOS (like the NPR performance).

Well, at least this is a somewhat more distinguished collaboration than the GETTING IN OVER MY HEAD album cover!

Crazy idea. Just alienating hard-up fans even more by pricing Brian merchandise out of their pockets. Sometimes it's hard to work out why we remain fans ... must be the music!

That said, maybe they'll sell the book at Brian's upcoming gigs, and throw-in a free autographed Pet Sounds era doll with a Pet Sounds shoulder bag to hold it all in.

Gosh, I hope so!

For £900, I'd expect the original manuscript, personally delivered by Brian.

Thanks, but I'll wait until it's £19.99 on amazon.co.uk.

There are only 1000 copies being printed, so one doubts it will get down to that price point. That being said, they have released mass-market editions of some of these books -- Ringo's postcard book, for example -- so maybe at some point.

£900 is actually the pre-publication deal - the 'real' cost is £1250 !
