Live In Chicago '65
«

On SOT's "
The Live Box
", we have the following songs from a Capitol remote recording of the Beach Boys playing live in Chicago in '65--These tracks are listed as including studio overdubs--presumably because as reported, some of the mike cables snapped when the stage rose (if I remember correctly?)
As the BeachBoys.com says, "They rip through five songs (with repeats of Johnny B Goode and I Get Around) with high enthusiasm and ferocious playing....":
1. Don't Worry Baby
2. I Get Around
3. Johnny B Goode
4. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow
5. Fun Fun Fun
6. I Get Around (repeat)
7. Johnny B Goode (repeat)
8. Outro
On "
Hawthrone
" we have available:
1) Shut Down
On "
The Beach Boys: US Singles Collection
" we are offered:
1) 409
In essence we now have 7 tracks live from Chicago '65 now available from legitimate and bootleg sources.
Two quetsions:
1)How many songs are we now missing and does anyone have the complete track listing?
2) Was more than 1 show recorded live in Chicago and could these be a combination from both?
Thanking in advance!
Regards,
Cal aka "Beatle Bob

There were two shows in Chicago in March of '65 I believe, and both were recorded. The SOT materials are just the vocal repair work tracks from the shows. The other tracks are undubbed, presumably, unless the band did indeed overdub them in '65. Apparently the shows were recorded for another live album that year.

The shows were recorded on three track at McCormick Place on March 26th 1965 with Brian performing. There were two shows that were recorded. Mark talked about the shows as far back as 1996 for an interview with Goldmine. It was said that the entire show was mixed down during the Endless Harmony bio (by either Mark or Andrew Sandoval). They were going to release tracks on that CD but bypassed it. Mark finally got Shut Down on Hawthorne and 409 was first available as an mp3 download from Best Buy (which I got when I purchased my copy of Warmth Of The Sun). It was finally added on CD as the third track of the Surfin Safari / 409 single in the singles boxset.

I asked this in the Alan Boyd-thread. Maybe we'll get an answer soon. It's quite an interesting live-ear to me

To take this further, one show I know had problems with cables being snapped when the stage rose. Would these vocal overdub tracks on the SOT set be these specific tracks-- since they overdubbed only vocals (from what I've read)?
On Eric Aniversario's site,
The Beach Boys Set List Archive
, he lists three shows, with the set lists not in correct order, but these are what is reported:
Ellis Auditorium, Memphis, TN
April 10, 1965
. Fun,Fun,Fun
2. Hawaii
3. Surfer Girl
4. Surfin' U.S.A.
5. Louie Louie
6. Runaway
7. Monster Mash
8. Long Tall Texan
9. I Get Around
10. Do You Wanna Dance
11. Shut Down
12. 409
13. Johnny B. Goode
Portland Exposition Hall, Portland, ME
July 9, 1965
Little Honda
Runaway
Monster Mash
Surfer Girl
Louie Louie
The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)
Wendy
Fun, Fun, Fun
Help Me Rhonda
I Get Around
Municipal Auditorium, Fresno, CA
August 1, 1965
Little Deuce Coupe
Shut Down
Little Honda
Surfin USA
Surfer Girl
Papa Oom Mow Mow
Little Old Lady From Pasadena
Girl Don't Tell Me
Hawaii
California Girls
I Get Around
Wendy
Monster Mash
So based on what we have listed above, can anyone seem to piece together the corrrect set list order of songs for the Chicago shows? Also is there any updated and diffinitive information on these shows? I'd like to take what I listed in my initial thread of available tracks from these shows, and put it in a logical order by what we have available so far.
Thanking in advance!

Since they knew they were recording, I guess they would exclude some songs that were already on "Concert", like "Monster mash". On the other hand they did "Papa-oom...", "Fun fun fun" and "Johnny b good". I suppose they had a different setlist for Chicago then the regular one of that year. Just a guess though.
Would be awesome if there would be a '65 live-recording of "Girl don't tell me"

Well....attempting to get this thread back on topic to one of my initial points of trying to figure out a correct order that these tracks (though the whole set is not represented here in full) could follow...I've been back on Eric Aniversario's great resource site, (
The Beach Boys Set List Archive
) and after reviewing set lists available from '63 through early '66 --
I feel this might be the logical order they could have appeared
(though of course minus the missing songs), as they juggled certain songs around in their play list thru '66 (and using available examples of available play lists before and after these Chicago '65 shows were recorded:
1. Fun Fun Fun
2. 409
3. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow
4. Shut Down
5. Don't Worry Baby
6. I Get Around
7. Johnny B. Goode
What do you all think?
If anyone has more information on these concerts with possible a possible full-track listing for both shows, it would be very much appreciated!

Sorry to have bumped this up, but I feel it's important and worthwhile to figure out the placement of these tracks for historical purposes.
Do you think I'm pretty much on target or do you think the placement should be revised--and how?
Thanks!

Alan Boyd would probably be your best choice to answer such questions, perhaps drop a query in his thread. Personally, I really don't know. All we have are the two released tracks and the vocal repair tracks on the SOTs. Perhaps the concerts are out there somewhere but who knows?

Thanks to Catbirdman, we now know that "Please let me wonder" was also played at this concert.

Super-excited for that, since Del Shannon's "Runaway" is probably my favourite song ... ever.
Can't wait to hear the '65 BBs perform that baby.
