How does the newest incarnation of 'Lady' relate to the version on the Aussie 1980-or-so 'Rarities' LP version?

Don -
I just picked up my copy of Rarities to double check - it is unfortunately a U.S. pressing, but I spent a minute looking at the cover before putting it back. Certainly beats the cover for "Summer Love Songs." Especially vinyl-sized..
This sounds to me like an alternate version, or an alternate mix. I am going to do an A/B between a few versions that I have. The vocal sounds different to me. As someone stated up thread, however, it could be an amalgam (same backing track, different vocal take, etc.)

Um... problem here - there is no US pressing of the Australian
Brian Wilson/Beach Boys Rarities
album.

I again retract what I had written here. They just isolated the vocal more (among other remix elements), grafted the isolated string part on before the original beginning to highlight its beauty, and let the outro run longer, which revealed additional overdubbed vocal parts by Dennis, like those in the extended fade in the POB version of Only with You.
Very nice!

My understanding is that the Lady recording on the Aussie Rarities is what we would now call a "needle drop" - IE: they had a copy of the UK single and took a tape recording of the single being played. Do'ncha just love 70's technology??

that's what I assumed was on all the Landlocked boots and such....
If only they'd release the tv appearence in which Dennis performed Lady....And it'd be great to hear Sound of Free remastered. .....I have a feeling there's a lot there that we're not hearing....those early Dennis recordings in the 70s were so good, they all had their own personality: Slip on Through, Celebrate the News, I'm Goin Your Way, Forever, 4th of July, Cuddle Up, Sound of Free, Lady, It's About Time, etc.

This was done on 16 track, right? I suspect this is the same take as the single, just a radically different mix with elements left out of the original and perhaps an entirely different lead vocal (on the same multitrack). The intro is bothersome - it's just the same string track as comes in later, moved to the front - I always thought the way the original started so starkly was great, THEN having the strings come in adds a sudden lushness and romanticism. Strings/starkness/strings doesn't really do it for me. I'd like to know if the string intro is on the mutitrack or if this is a revisionist edit.

A remastered, remixed Sound of Free would be very sweet indeed. That David Frost performance of Fallin'in Love is a little stark and minimalist, but great (it doesn't circulate in any semblance of decent sound quality to my knowledge). I just skipped ahead and modified this, had to lend my voice to the
chorus of pain that no video exists of this exceptional, relaxed T.V. appearance by the band, with
Dennis' funny, mellow banter with Frost about Two Lane Blacktop, etc.

It sounds good on the Aussie Rarites (a totally different LP then the USA one) and even better on the Landlocked LP boot. I like the original much more but it's interesting to hear anything kind of new. I thought the vocal on the new one was different in parts and not as good pitch wise.

The album I am referring to is the Beach Boys Rarities LP - side 1 begins with a cover of "With a Little Help from My Friends," ends with "Celebrate the News." It has a blonde in a blue bikini on the cover. It's not Brian Wilson/Beach Boys rarities, just Beach Boys Rarities.

Thanks to all for trying to comment on my question so diligently. As a result, I will listen to both the U.S.A. and the Aussie Rarities LPs.
I am quite sure that, had Lady been promoted rightly when it was finished, that the song could have been a huge hit. If only because the buyers would have been mostly of the female persuasion, hormones raging, etc. etc. etc.

Unfortunately the video of their appearance performing "Fallin' In Love" aka "Lady" (plus "Vegetables" & "Forever") on David Frost was
criminally
wiped years ago.

It is indeed. I have a super clean version of Lady from 1971 and this one on Summer Love Songs sounds "crafted together". I did a whole interview with Steve M. about putting the Rarities LP together in 1981. If I find it, I will post it here.

I think he means they erased or recorded over the show; not an uncommon practice in those days. What a shame. Criminal!
I had to do something the night this was broadcast. I had my mom cassette tape it for me. I used to listen to it over and over. I still dream of seeing it one day.

Yep, same over here. Our TV stations broadcast many series that are considered 'classic' now. But in the '60s and '70s Ampex tape was expensive, and there was no concept of any longevity of a programme in the minds of people. Sadly, now there's a lot of regret.

70s technology still used in the late 00s for the Murry Wilson reissue, except I guess they didn't use analog tape for that.

I agree with both of you. Here's mine:
1. Thoughts Of You
2. Lady
3. Cuddle Up
4. Love Remember Me
5. Tie - Moonshine or You And I
Based purely on emotion, not many artists EVER can match those.
