I am still working on an article about their 1977-1998 TV apps and I have never seen this show-it aired in syndication in 1981 and 1982. Earliest TV listing I can find is early June 1981.  Was it just a clip show? Did the BBs appear? Did they sing or just do interviews?  Just to be clear-I am not talking about the 25th Anniversary show from Hawaii.  This is an earlier one.

ian,

i have this on vhs tape. at least one called "beach boys 20th anniversary special". also on the tape is the 7/4/80 hbo washington show...which aired back here in oct 1980. i would have to watch the tape for a date but i seem to remember it was on tv back here around early 1981....assuming my tape is the show you are talking about. i will watch the show to see if i can find something out.
one thing that may help you..i taped it from a cincinnati, oh station. a radio station called (back then) yes 95fm in cincinnati aired the audio live as the video was aired on tv. maybe the station will have a record of that.

pm me ............

There were new interviews done for it by all the band including Brian and Dennis. I think they were filmed in 1980. It had vintage clips and a lot of stuff from Knebworth and 7-4-1980. It's not fantastic but a lot better then the 25th special.

I believe the Dennis interview from American Band and Endless Harmony (it took place on a boat) was from the 20th anniversary special. Maybe the inteview of Carl walking on the beach came from this show as well?

Didn't some of the Knebworth footage first surface on this show?

I checked my vid's and found a copy of that 20th Anniversary TV-Special as well (both a US-broadcast and a German synchronised version). Approximately 48min. From what remember interviews and lot's of Knebworth clips.

Found a lot more from that era. In case you're curious whether there are TV-appearances you didn't know about, just pm me as well (but I assume Steve will have more info  Roll Eyes  )

No, it wasn't in the '76 special, but it was filmed for it.

To answer the question, the 20th Anniversary show was basically a combo of live footage from Knebworth 6/20/80 and Washington D.C. 7/4/80, interspersed with interviews (the Boys in 1980, Glen Campbell, Daryl Dragon), and a couple of vintage T.V. clips (Ed Sullivan, Kraft Music Hall, etc.).  I loved it.

Somewhere I have a old BBFUN news-letter with a review I think of a 20th anniversary gig in Long Beach with a after show party in a empty pool if my memory is correct. This may have been New Year 1980, as I think mention is made of their first gig being New Year 1961 and it not being quite 20 years.

Will dig t out if I can if anyone wants me to.

Gosh, I'd love to see that, too!  There's a picture from that party, on page 88 in "Denny Remembered", of Dennis, Mike Merros, and a lady friend of Dennis' & mine named Gaye...  The anniversary show was at the Forum in L.A.  Brian in the sequined robe...  Dennis & I raced to the pool party, up on Sunset, in 2 classic cars, with the petrified owners of the cars sitting shotgun.  Walked in & tore a turkey to shreds!  Ah, the good old days...

Well I have found 3 BBFUN with mentions of a 20th gig.

1 August issue. Mike mentions a show being planned. No venue at time but all ex band members to be invited plus the Captain and Tennille plus Sonny and Cher.

2 November issue. Al and Brian confirm gig New Years eve at Inglewood. (Not Long Beach as I had thought.) Two stage sets planned. One a beach scene and the other a giant turntable. Both to be used on tour in 81 but one at a time.

3 February issue. Short mention of Star on Hollywood Blvd December 30 plus gig the next evening. Mention of 3 songs seldom performed live at the time. '409', 'Surfin Safari' and 'I Can Hear Music'. Jan and Dean plus American Spring joined in at the end of the show. A few photos of the gig are of poor quality and 'reprinted by permission of Brother Records'. The usual concert shots but one of Al wearing a early BBs striped shirt of interest. One long distance shot of private party held at the Berwin Entertainment Center, (now The Hollywood Athletic Club I believe) in a giant pool. No individual members or associates in view, except Ed Roach naked in a palm tree! (ok...I made that last part up Grin )

No mention anywhere of gig or party being filmed.

I also recall reading something about why the gig was happening in New Year 1980 and I think Mike mentions the band may have broken up by New Year 1981. I guess with Carl planning his album doubts must have been raised about The Beach Boys future.

As an aside. One old issue mentions Dennis hurting his hand playing drums during a concert in Detroit during 1980. Any more details Ed.
