"Summer Love Songs:Girls on The Beach" is the title of a new Capitol Beach Boys compilation CD due in May. No word on the contents, or if there is any rare or remixed material to get completists to buy it.

Ouch! That must hurt. It's just Capitol doing their annual Beach Boys marketing exercise. What's summer without a new Beach Boys compilation?

It's not that I blame them: if there were something I had that I could release annually and get a great profit from it, I'd do it, too. But as someone who pines for something else and instead is annually shown a compilation of stuff that is 90% or more old news (with the new stuff being remixes of old news), it's a little depressing. Hell, I'm not even asking for a legit Smile sessions box or Adult/Child (OK, I'd take them...). Just a few newly (officially) released tunes ... please?

Heck, I'd be happy if they included two previously unreleased internet downloads with this cd...they don't even have to be ON the cd...come on people, give us something good we haven't heard (legally, anyway).

There was a vinyl comp LP called Girls On The Beach a couple of decades (approx) back in the UK, about the same time as the UK singles box -  ie, all bikini-based marketing. Wonder if it's the same tracklist? Wonder if they'll tour to support it? Wonder if they'll all wear bikinis to promote the corporate image? Can you remaster & remix a bikini? Bonus whacks?

And if this compilation sells, there will no doubt be another concept compilation next year (I presume a car themed one or something)...

Why bother digging up unreleased material when another hit compilation will sell better anyway?  Roll Eyes

Should we guess the track-list?
I'll go with a 26-never-appeared-on-a-compilation-before-tracks:

1   California Girls
2   All Summer Long
3   Fun, Fun, Fun
4   Help Me, Rhonda
5   Surfer Girl
6   Don't Worry Baby
7   Wendy
8   Why Do Fools Fall In Love
9   Please Let Me Wonder
10   The Warmth Of The Sun
11   Do You Wanna Dance?
12   Then I Kissed Her
13   You're So Good To Me
14   Barbara Ann
15   I Get Around
16   Girl Don't Tell Me
17   The Little Girl I Once Knew
18   Wouldn't It Be Nice
19   God Only Knows
20   Good Vibrations
21   Darlin'
22   Come Go With Me
23   Good Timin'
24   Getcha Back
25   Kokomo
26   Girls On The Beach

As it says "love-songs" I think it will be more a ballad-collection. So no "Fun fun fun", etc. Just a guess though...

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

It's about having fun with a girl, so it could be considered a love song.

My guess is a line-up kinda like this:

Girls On The Beach
Don't Worry Baby
Farmers Daughter
Kiss Me Baby
Girl Don't Tell Me
Wendy
Don't Hurt My Little Sister
Warmth Of The Sun
Then I Kissed Her
Please Let Me Wonder
Surfer Girl
You're So Good To Me
Help Me, Rhonda
California Girls
God Only Knows
Caroline, No
Wouldn't It Be Nice?
Forever
Good Vibrations

Totally. If it was me I'd rather throw a "Keep An Eye on Summer" or a "Your Summer Dream".
But would a BB compilation be released without the main hits? Especially since, as Shelter said, FFF could be considered a summer-fun-love song (stretch, I know)

But is it sure this is going to be a major release? Isn't it just one of those crappy ten song 'budget' releases?

In the last couple of weeks I saw on many places a new compilation, with a strange track list. Considering the Beach Boys aren't even that well known in Austria.

Cottonfields
Barbara Ann
I Get Around
Fun, Fun, Fun
Surfin' USA
Good Vibrations
Do It Again
Finders Keepers
Girl Don't Tell Me
Then I Kissed Her
Surfer Girl
Don't Worry Baby
Mountain Of Love
The Nearest Faraway Place
Let's Go Away For Awhile
Surfin' Safari

It's a pukka Capitol release. I'm prepared to sit tight and see what transpires before dissing it. Like I said, given the recent track record, I'm expecting a stereo remix or two... but hell, I'll buy it anyway, for reasons two:

1 - I pay for it, I can rip it a new one with credibility and a clear conscience...

2 - I'm a fan - it's what I do.  Cheesy
