TV commercials an influence on Brian's modular recording style?
«

The other day a friend of mine told me he had heard that the random juxtaposition of TV commercials was an influence in forming Brian's modular recording style. Recently Dada made a similar comment on this board, which makes two people who have suggested the idea.
Does anyone have any further wisdom or info about where/when Brian might have made these comments? It seems like a very plausible influence for Brian, who I think was a TV watcher. I would love to pin down a source so I can cite it later on.
And a follow up question: anyone know what TV shows Brian liked in the mid 60's?
Thanks as always for the help!

Well, I know I read it on the internet somewhere from a place that seemed reputable, I just can't remember where now. As far as favorite TV shows, supposedly Brian would cry while watching Flipper during the Smile era, and he also liked the Looney Tunes cartoons as well as the James Bond movies (not sure if any of them were on TV yet by '66/'67). That's all I know off the top of my head.

The "
You're Under Arrest
" / "Heroes & Villains" material seems inspired by Looney Tunes, but the more pictorial SMiLE music appears to have been inspired by Disney ("April Showers" from BAMBI comes to mind).

Yeah, Brian was reportedly crazy about those old Disney movies. Around the Smile era, he used to conduct notes in the air like Mickey Mouse in the famous Fantasia sequence. Not sure if he was watched Tom and Jerry much, but I could see that cartoon inspiring some of the Smile material. The way the instruments mimic what's going on in the cartoon while still being melodic reminds me of some of the Smile experiments, from the trumpet laugh of George Fell into His French Horn, to the musical mimicry in "Surf's Up", to the weird sound effects of "Heroes and Villains" and "Fire", and other examples.

TV was a big influence on John Lennon's writing style in the 60s. He liked to watch several TVs at once.
