...you were compiling a Best Of The Beach Boys album of tracks released between the Smiley Smile-Sunflower period. There is a lot of interesting/enduring material from the boys during this time, but I've always felt the material from this time could be presented with more more coherence. So, if you were asked to put together a compilation that showcased their best work from this era, what would be on your cd and in what sequence? Non-album tracks and rarities are game!

A compilation disc with these songs would blow some minds and cause a great deal of confusion if released to the public as a beach boys collection.
I think they should do it. If it were unknown Beatles or Stone songs it would already have been done.

I agree, and I guess that's what I mean when saying that the quality of the material is definitely here in this era, but for the average (non obsessive) music fan to get into it, the best stuff needs to be presented a bit more coherently. I love this creative period in the Boys' history!

Blow, it does not! It's a catchy-ass song, and I like Ed Carter's lead guitar.

I've always tried to include SOME of this era in compilations but it becomes to unwieldy when mixed with other eras. This is the way to do it. A two disc set of the SS/WH through SU era. Question is; what to do with the good stuff from 74-75 through Somewhere Near Japan? I think yet another era compilation is in order.

1970-80 - and I'm going for a certain feel here...
Double CD
Cotton Fields Slip On Through This Whole World Forever All I Wanna Do Cool, Cool Water Lookin' at Tomorrow Day in the Life of a Tree Long Promised Road Fourth of July Feel Flows Disney Girls Surf's Up 'Til I Die All This is That Hold on Dear Brother Marcella Cuddle Up Sweet Mountain TM (the Charles Lloyd song)
Sail on Sailor The Trader Big Sur Beaks of Eagles California Wishin' You Were Here Had to Phone Ya The Night Was So Young Johnny Carson River Song Pacific Ocean Blues Winter Symphony My Diane Pitter Patter Country Pie Good Timin' California Feelin' Down the Coastline Angel Come Home Love Surrounds Me Baby Blue Santa Ana Winds
Each is about 71-72 minutes and there were certainly several tracks I would like to add as well as a couple I'm not sure about for this particular compilation (Johhny Carson, for example). The Santa Ana Winds is the one off KTSA, though I have a lot of time for the other one...

Hmmm. I'm trying to make a 80-present day double CD (including solo stuff), but apart from the, let's say, variable quality of the material, the varying quality of the production styles makes it an uneasy listen - especially 85, BW88, SIP and Imagination. Not pleasant.

Are you including Keepin' The Summer Alive in this comp or starting after it?
