I was just wondering what is the deal with Brian Gari? Until recently I thought the only thing he had to do with anything in relation to the Beach Boys was record a tribute album - Brian Sings Wilson - but I just came across this in the book Inside The Music Of Brian Wilson on page 210:

"in a letter to Brian Gari in 1965, Murry claims to have been working on a lyric for the melody of 'Summer Means New Love.' Gari himself wrote a lyric for the song and released his full vocal version...on his 2002 CD Brian Gari Sings Brian Wilson"

So I was just wondering. Did he actually know Brian or any of the boys (to some degree) back in the 60's? I know he may just be a minor footnote in Beach Boys history but did he have anything else to do with the Beach Boys throughout the years? Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me any info.

Not sure but he wrote Add Some Music in 1979 I think and had them print Murry's letter. It was very polite.

Thanks for the info MBE. Is there anywhere that I can find this publication? Isn't there a book called that which is a collection of old articles etc.. Sorry if I'm way off I'm not familiar with the publication. What else does Murry's letter basically say?

In "Add Some Music" Vol. 7, No. 1 (Winter 1984) Brian Gari wrote:

"When I was 13 years  old, I starterd writing to my idols - songwriters. I had been writing songs myself for a year by that time and wanted to contact the most unacknowledged people behind a hit song, the writers. Murry Wilson was one such person, having written a really good song for The Sunrays, entitled "Bye Bye Baby". I offer you his letter, which I believe, has some interesting surprises."

Quote from Murry´s answer (December 11, 1965):

"... in my opinion Brian´s best songs are "The Warmth Of The Sun", "In My Room" and a beautiful instrumental on the "Summer Days" album. I am writing lyrics to this beautiful instrumental and The Sunrays will record it in their first album."

Hey thanks so much for the info. Really appreciated!! Smiley That's cool to know that his favourite songs are WOTS, IMR and SMNL. Of course it mentions on the back cover of Many Moods that his favourite is WOTS. But I wonder what his favourite songs were after Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations and all albums through Holland were released?

I'd imagine he liked Break Away.

These sound great. Brian's vocals sound front and center w/o a lot of reverb. Interesting.
