POB: "Only With You" & "Tug Of Love"
«

There's new samples on the Pacific Ocean Blue website of "Tug Of Love" and "Only With You" if anyone is interested. Not sure if anyone's going to listen to them or are just going to wait - I couldn't help myself. Just wondering what anyone else thinks? I like Only With You, not so sure about Tug Of Love yet.

I originally intended to wait for the CD, but so what...
Wow, these two samples sound fantastic. "Tug Of Love" - Can't wait to hear the complete song - very Beach Boys-ish - and I already know that I like Dennis' version of "Only With You" better than the BB track. He sounds fantastic on it.
Even on these streaming files the sound quality of the POB songs is much clearer than on my CD copy.

F$#@ - It's criminal that these songs have remained unreleased for 31 years. Wow! Just can't wait!!!!!

I think both titles sound very interesting, but you can't say much more because they are just short samples. I have to admit though that I like Carl's voice better on "Only with you" but let's see what happens when we have the complete thing.

I'm with you there Rocker. I prefer Carl's lead as well. But as you say these are just 30 second clips so it's hard to tell.

Tug of Love kind of sounds like a newer sounding Holland (when's the recording date for this gem?) sounds like Mike it in the bass vocals.
Only With You sounds like it has a little more soul.
btw, i can't wait to hear what the other Beach Boys have to say about POB/Bambu, inparticularly Brian

Tug of Love was recorded in '76, the bass vocal is Dennis and Gregg Jakobson...Mike Love is not on any of these recordings. Through the years Brian has said many times he thought POB was great..."I loved it" is a very recent quote. Carl loved it too. Bruce said recently he didn't like it.

so not much point taking brian's opinion on it as he will say something different every time

He may or may not be on crack, but he's certainly allowed not to like the album. I have a couple of very good friends who cannot listen to it because the emotion is too raw. Nothing to do with the music or the artist, and everything to do with pain.

Right on. I believe anyone's entitled to have an opinion about POB, but if we really had to sort it out, Bruce worked with Dennis for about 11 years. The rest of us didn't.

Yeah but then again, Brian also said years ago that Dennis wasn't singing on "Just Once In My Life" cause he was dead. And then he didn't even remember the Love You album. As you say he will say something different every time. But just cause he says "I've never heard it" doesn't mean that that's true

Wow. I finally caved, and listened to some of these samples. Wow. I've never heard Tug of Love before, it sounds incredible. Very...I don't know...Brianish. And these streaming samples sound better than the disc of POB that was given to me. I can't wait to hear the whole two CD set, on my home system, through my big, old-fashioned speakers. Bring it on.

Posted on the Legacy site yesterday:
Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue
4/29/2008 9:50:00 PM
The double-CD PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE – LEGACY EDITION will arrive in stores June 17th on Caribou/Epic/Legacy.
Eternal Beach Boy Dennis Wilson’s much sought-after 1977 solo album – which Mojo Magazine has heralded as a “buried treasure” -- will return to circulation on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary of Wilson’s untimely death in 1983, at age 39. The double-CD PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE – LEGACY EDITION will arrive in stores June 17th on Caribou/Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. A vinyl edition of the LP will also be released at the same time, on the Sundazed label.
In 1977, Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue became the first solo LP to be released by a member of the legendary Beach Boys. Dennis, the band’s surfer, drummer and free spirit, emerged from the shadow of his older brother, pop genius Brian Wilson, and shocked the industry with a sound and style unlike any other. Over thirty years later Pacific Ocean Blue remains arguably the greatest solo work by a Wilson.
“In all those years since Pacific Ocean Blue became a rare gem, I have been eager to make it more widely available,” says James William Guercio, producer and owner of Caribou Records, who served then and now as executive producer. “The music that caught the ear of critics and fans in 1977 has fallen from popular conscious¬ness in the last two decades, and it has long been due this incredible treatment. The devotion that the Legacy Recordings crew has shown to both the official album and the huge number of unreleased tracks is a testa¬ment to the strength of Dennis’ musical genius.”
Dozens of musicians and singers collaborated on the Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu sessions, which took place at numerous studios around Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami. In addition to Dennis Wilson on vocals, drums, percussion, keyboards, and harmonica, there were his wife Karen Lamm-Wilson; Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys on guitar and vocal backgrounds; latter day Beach Boys members Billy Hinsche and Bruce Johnston (vocal backgrounds) and Ricky Fataar (drums); Beach Boys engineer Earle Mankey (guitar); and many West Coast session greats. A host of background vocalists included Christine McVie of Fleeetwood Mac, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean, and more.

Bruce said recently he didn't like it.
Of course you'd expect that from Mr. "I Write the Songs" Johnston. It's probably not schmaltzy/Barry Manilow-ish enough for him, and his boss the Lovester (whom Bruce doesn't want to anger by praising Mike's cousin/former nemesis) had nothing to do with it except for co-writing "Pacific Ocean Blues". Of course that's just pure speculation.

Aegir, you may be having problems because the POB site uses a Flash-based engine. It works OK for me, albeit slow, but I've had problems with other Flash-based websites in the past.
