I doubt this ever happened, but was Dean ever considered (or offered) to be a member of the Beach Boys in the late 60's or early 70's? After Jan's accident and Brian not touring, it would seem that touring as a member of the BB's would have been a nice fit for him. Personally, I think he could do a better falsetto than Bruce, although Bruce was a better musician. Just curious.

I seem to recall that Dean was to be Mike's replacement if there was a emergency situation in the late 70's>80's (Mike's idea) but I don't recall if he did do so....

There was a tour (late 70s/early 80s ? - Ian would know for sure) where Dean replaced Mike as the latter was off doing something else.
And this is just my opinion, but Dean couldn't carry a tune iffn you sewed handles on it.

Remember - a lot of the falsetto you hear on the 'hits' isn't always Dean. Don Altfeld, Phil Sloan (maybe even BW) etc all added to the falsetto lines on those songs so, much as I love Dean, I kinda gotta agree with AGD - even tho' "Save For A Rainy Day" is a great offering ...

Generally I think I agree as Dean is not a very strong singer, Jan was much better imho,, but Dean's "Yesterday" from Folk'n'Roll is awesome !

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I always found t interesting that the Sundazed version of "Save For A Rainy Day" was complete with mono and stereo recordings of all the original lp but NOT a stereo version of "Like a Summer Rain"
The stereo version of this song is excellent (overdubs or not) and I've only got it on vinyl on a cbs records compilation from the early 80's ( name escapes me for the moment)
anyone know why this track was omitted from the sundazd set??

I also doubt that Dean could have cut it in the Beach Boys vocally (much as I love what he contributed to Jan & Dean with his puckish humor and attitude). Keep in mind that
Dennis
of all people was bitching at Dean during the PARTY sessions about singing on key, and later in an interview made a point of identifying his parts of "Barbara Ann" as the "parts that were out of tune." And that's coming from probably the least vocally flexible member of the BBs. Dean did do some decent harmony singing as part of the stack with Jan and the Fantastic Baggies, but I don't think he was up to the every day level of the BBs work.

"Yesterday" (1965) is Dean's best non-falsetto lead vocal moment. It's very well done.
