For those that dig this stuff. The Gigs/sessions page at AGD's fantastic site has been updated-now includes 1975. As per usual-I handle the gigs, AGD the sessions. He has some excellent sources for the sessions. It also includes many new gig updates I found from the years 1962-1974-including Nov 22 1966 Ithaca College, Aug 20 and 21 1965 Sacramento, Mar 2 1962 Milikan HS, July 20 1969 Troy Armory, etc, etc. So there you go.  If anyone knows of any missing shows-let us know, don't be shy!

I've got one for you- April 17, 1965 at an unspecified ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida.  Not listed in the Badman book, I believe. Opening acts included two local bands, the Nightcrawlers and the Escorts, sharing the stage and alternating numbers, and this is significant because the Escorts included teenagers Duane and Gregg Allman- it was their first band and this was the first significant gig for either one of them.  The show was reportedly recorded.

I missed it- I was one state away and one day less than a month old.

I appreciate the post-actually we already list that one on the site-it was at City Island Ballpark- I have a photo of them onstage-with Glen Campbell (soon to be replaced fulltime by Bruce-but still playing some dates on this tour)

It occurred to me as I posted that you might have it- haven't seen the site, but I was pretty sure that Badman didn't have it.  There is a photograph of the Escorts on stage that night as well. I wonder if that ballpark still exists?

I think the Beach Boys also shared a bill with the Allmans at some point at one of the Fillmores circa 1971 (closing night?)- a great honor for both bands.

Excellent work, there, you're doing!

The ballpark does still exist but is now named Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Mr Robinson of course was the first African-American major league baseball player.
On October 22, 1998, the stadium was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

It appears that they spent a week in Florida. I found a show in Clearwater-which was played on Apr 12 1965- I have a great photo from the paper of them riding into the Jack Russell Stadium on a car with Glen Campbell. They played in Miami on the 15th and Daytona on Apr 17.  They may have played in Orlando on the 19th (as stated in Keith Badman) but I can't find any documentation. They were in Deleware on the 20th- so maybe they had a working vacation in Florida- I doubt they flew back to LA that week at all.

Great stuff, thanks to both of you. How far forward is this history going?  I know Badman cut it off some time in the seventies.

At some point someone needs to attempt to figure out, as nearly as possible,  exactly how many concerts have been performed under the name "Beach Boys", and how many shows Mike Love has done (being that he's done far more of them than anyone else, and only ever missed a few). If anyone ever puts a number to it, it'll be staggering figure, and I would bet that any other band- even (say) a band still performing as the Glen Miller Orchestra, with no original members-  would have a hard time matching it.

Well-I would say this- we have many shows listed, but a complete and total list is difficult to do. For example-I have a feeling the BBs did a number of local shows in 1962 that were not advertised and for which documentation is non existent.  Once we get into 1963 it gets better-but I am sure there are 20 shows that I know nothing about at the least.  One problem-it is easy to find shows in big cities like NY and Chicago-but it is very time consuming to obtain info on gigs in smaller cities- like Fort Wayne and Spokane (though I have done it).  You need to have some idea of a date and then obtain microfilm of the local paper from the time you want- which involves a library loan to your city-which takes time.  In 1963 the BBs played many small towns. Still-we uncovered (with help from Jon Stebbins and Dave Marks) almost all the dates from their Summer 63 tour-many in very obscure places.   Up to 1966 their touring was at least straight forward gigs-usually (but not always) advertised in papers but starting in 1966 they began to do many college gigs as well. Often these are only advertised in college papers-so it is a very difficult to track them down. For example-a Ball State show that I found from May 11 1966-was from a passing mention in an Indianapolis paper. Once I had the exact date, Ball State was happy to help. The show was a huge success= I would not be surprised if they appeared there again-but since I have no exact date, I can't ask the Ball State library to look- college librarians are busy-happy to help if you have a fairly exact date, but not willing to do huge research for you. So all I can do is wait and see if something gets mentioned online or in passing that gives me a lead.  It's possible that the shows would be advertised in the Muncie papers-but looking thru microfilm of Muncie papers-in the hopes of finding a show for which I have no exact date is not my idea of fun. Once we get into the 70s-the BBs played mainly colleges in 1971-74 period-very hard to find- I have found a ton-but it is alot of trial and error. That being said-1971 to 1975 are 85% complete I'd say-which is cool

LOL

I remember you said it was in 1974, and I had heard elsewhere that it was fall of 1974, but it sounds more like  1976 to me..

Brian's Hard Times was recorded in 11-74 and Back Home in 9-75. Man what a change in such a short time. I emailed  the enginieer at the California Music sessions (Jimmi Sieter-I'm not sure how to spell his last name without looking it up) and he said Brian sounded fine then to him but he admited to not really knowing Beach Boys music. As for Drip Drop I would say by listening to live tapes it sounds like the Love You era perhaps 15 Big Ones.

Yep, probably recorded for the 'New Album' in 1976.

You know that could be it. Ruby Baby sounds almost identical in feel and vocals.
