The man behind some of the most influential rock albums in music history is coming to Australia in January.

Breakfasts Adam Spencer caught up with former Beach Boy, Brian Wilson, and talked about his musical genius, troubled past and remarkable comeback.

Wilson formed the Beach Boys back in the early 60's with his two brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. In the beginning the songs mainly focused on surfing and the Californian lifestyle with hits like Surfin USA, Surfer Girl, Fun Fun Fun, I Get Around and Barbara Ann.

The bands 11th album, Pet Sounds, marked a change from the Beach Boys previous work and is considered one of the most influential rock albums ever. Pet Sounds was created by Brian Wilson while the rest of the band was on tour. By this stage he had begun to withdraw from touring to focus more on music. While making the album he experimented with elaborate layers of vocal harmonies and unconventional instruments. Brian Wilson says he knew he was onto something good with Pet Sounds.

"I wanted to grow musically and try something different from the cars and surfing songs. I felt it coming through my fingers."

Even though the band continued touring and Brian went on to write more hits over the years, he contributed less and less to the albums and withdrew from the band. In 1988 he staged a solo comeback and has since recorded several albums, including Imagination.

Brian Wilson says he still enjoys playing most of his songs, especially That Old Lucky Sun from his new song cycle. He will headline the Sydney Festival in January 2008 as well as making two appearances featuring performances from Pet Sounds and That Lucky Old Sun.

What's been the secret to your longevity?

"I have a lot of willpower. It comes from my soul and my last name Wilson".

Thanks for the link. Typical interview where Brian is happy to repeat the assessments put forth by the interviewer, but that's what one would expect from a five minute radio piece. When the interviewer asks Brian if there are particular songs from his career that he still enjoys playing, Brian plays the salesman by only mentioning tracks from "That Lucky Old Sun".
