Simple question - I can't find my CDs and I just bought a CD by Maureen Gray who does the song.

The Students did the original version. It's pretty good, but I prefer Brian's take on it.

Every time you spell Smile as SMiLE, an angel's wings are forcibly torn off its body.

Phil Spector also cut it with the ronettes.

...and it's probably that version (very good, by the way) that made Brian want to cover it.

I'm not sure about that. I have an interview Brian did with Melody Maker from the early '70s, in which he plays the Students' 45 and told the interviewer, "This is the record that got me through high school."

I agree, I had already read this interview as well! Brian already loved the song, but I meant to say that I think the Ronettes' version acted as a "catalyst" that made Brian want to cover it.

Not splitting hairs but im sure Spector released it just as Veronica, not with a group credit. Anybody any idea why that was?

Phil Spector put his artists out there in many different combinations. Most notable with Darlene Love as herself, as backup on numerous songs, and as lead on some songs such as He's a Rebel by the Crystals. But he also took different approaches to promoting Ronnie Bennett.
She did some solo work while married to Phil Spector. And she reportedly recorded with all four Beatles on try some buy some.

I think I see what you mean in Brian's lead vocal, it does seem modeled on Ronnie's delivery.
