i'm also interested if this was the last instance of brian retaining the "old" voice.....it would just be interesting to know.

oddly enough though, i've grown to (for some odd reason) actually prefer the "new" voice lately, as in the voice on TLOS and whatnot. i've really enjoyed it.

Andrew, is there any chance CF '74 would see release on some type of rarities comp? It seems like something that would entice BB fans to buy. Especially if there was a Brother years comp

I prefer his voice now to twenty years ago. For some reason the Sweet Insanity album is his absolute low point vocally for me.

Of all the tracks that Andrew listed, the only one I can comment on is "My Solution"...its a creepy dischordant number about a scientist who discovers a formula that he believes will bring peace to the world.  Brian does the narration in a crazy scientist voice.  Oddly enough the melody and chords ended up becoming the "Happy Days" on Imagination.

I think that Brian's narration on this novelty song is very droll and funny in his inimitable fashion.

But it is otherwise a bit creepy and discordant. There is also a faster instrumental version floating around. Afro

I like that song, but the only version I have heard has really shitty sound...Except the instrumental one, but that is...um...instrumental.

I don't really find it creepy so much as oddly humorous.  The premise is so ridiculous that I can't help but laugh.  The music is definitely creepy by itself though, which I love.  I'm not really a fan of the later instrumental version.  It was a bit too "80's" for my taste.

Worst thing is, that's by Brian Bolland, one of the best artists in comics. He was just drawing Superman 'on-model' for the time :-/

I want to hear Brian's song about a cigarette.

That's from Adult Child, is called Everybody Wants To Live, and has been very widely bootlegged. I wouldn't dream of linking to unreleased material in a public forum, but I strongly suspect you could hear the song by going to any popular video sharing site and typing the title in.

Hmmm, the "90s" Superman (in my opinion) is Dean Cain, I don't think he had one, but I could be wrong, I only own the first season. Haven't seen the other seasons in forever.

I wouldn't say it was lyrically coherent enough to have a theme, as such. Musically gorgeous though:

The cigarette butt when you throw it in the water goes "pfft"
But the trick, but the trick is you shouldn't laugh
'Cause if you start laughing you're just a coward
If you start laughing you're just a coward

Everybody wants to live just once
Everybody's got to see it that way
And see what your life can be

There's been songs about celebration
But if you ask me I can't see why
There's too much pain, too much pain in my heart now
You're gonna have to prove it to me

Everybody wants to live just once
Everybody's got to see it that way
And see what your life can be

Now some people talking about ecology
Why don't somebody just do something 'bout it right now?
We're all chokin' on the air that we breathe now
How could we all just let it slide by

Everybody wants to live just once
Everybody's got to see it that way
And see what your life
What your life
What your life can be

Perhaps a heavy "slice of life" theme

Well, after all, Superman (Kal-el) was from a foreign planet, Krypton!

good call, maybe GIOMH would get a little more respect if it had been on there....

I think both California Feeling and the Bacharach tume, What Love Can Do (gorgeous tune) would have worked well on GIOMH, replacing a couple of the "more duff" tunes there!

Pretty sure "What Love Can Do" didn't exist yet by that time. And honestly, Brian's solo version of "California Feelin'" is so "meh" in my opinion. I think the 1974 demo version actually should've been on Classics selected by Brian Wilson, and that honesty would have pushed that collection one step higher, and trust me, Classics... is one of the releases that made me obsessed with the band. I think it wouod have been a perfect cap to the project, and wouldn't have had that "ick" effect the new version does, where you go from something beautiful and inspired like "'Til I Die" to something that showed how far Brian had fallen like the '02 "California Feelin'".

It actually is a cool song because the production is interesting and they put a lot into the (admittedly inebriated) vocals.

The lyrics to Everybody Wants to Live with their negative reference to celebration and reference to ecology sound like not very veiled digs at Love and Jardine.
