It's getting kinda near that time to get hype. Do we know if there is anything planned? Or what it may entail?

I absolutely love the copyright releases but loath the way the digital only releases are handled.  No announcements.  No rhyme or reason.

As you may recall if there is to be one, we usually know nothing about it till December. But there may not be one…in the last few years they have gotten around it by-for example-only briefly releasing tracks on some platform and then deleting them. On top of that-1974 and 75 from a recording point of view were not exactly overflowing with material-I think we are more likely to get some sort of archive release about the years 76-77 and if that happens it may be another year.  But hope springs eternal

The latest Record Collector magazine issue contains an interview with Mark and Alan and hints at some fun stuff in the works possibly even next year, folks!  Stay tuned.  🤞🙏🤞🙏

I'll have to try to pick that up.

While I agree one is unlikely, it is possible they could do something like they did in 2019...a digital EP of a handful of songs (for example, "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and any other Caribou recordings that may survive, plus an approximation of an early version of "River Song", etc.).

Or... during a slow year revisit past albums. Remix of older albums, outtakes, instrumentals, acapellas. New Smile stuff has been discovered. Tons of stuff from 62-67 could be released. They're sitting on a lot of stuff that if this is indeed a "slow year". Even if it's digital only.

I can't remember who brought this up in the past, probably HeyJude or c-man, but there was a fan-proposed idea of doing an Endless Summer box with outtakes/alternate takes of some of the greatest hits (for example, the session tapes for the songs "Surfer Girl" and "Little Deuce Coupe", IIRC).  That would have been the best possible scenario for a large-scale release this year, in my opinion, with the possible exception of if they decided to do an early 1970s "In Concert" box one year later (2024 instead of 2023).  And someday they need to get to The Beach Boys Today! and SDSN too.  I don't think I realized that there was a large(?) amount of "new" Smile discoveries?

Bump.

So isn't safe to assume no copyright this year? Or was there some shady shadow upload for 4 mins?
Am I the only person interested in these copyright extensions? Can't believe no one else is talking about it.

Me too, man... me too.
As mentioned by me and another user in this topic... there is still a lot of stuff that hasn't seen the light of day that would be fun and be worthy of a digital release.

I know we had the Big Beat 63 and the 64 Keep an Eye on Summer releases ... but so much material wasn't present. Especially based off of the Unsurpassed Masters. And I'm sure there is more in the vault or that has been located. Tons of stuff don't have session takes, acapellas, out takes, alt versions, studio chatter, remixes/remasters, etc. that would be great to hear.

Not to mention, a boxset/compilation of Today and Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) lots of stuff for these two albums to make a lot of fans happy.

We aren't getting any younger. A lot of us oldies just want whatever we can get while we are still able to.

What's a shame is (for 1974) they could definitely put out a small EP digitally.  I can think of at least four songs: a 1974 version of "Good Timin'" without 1978 overdubs, the infamous "Battle Hymn of the Republic", maybe some of the backing track for "It's OK", and the backing track for "Honeycomb" (IIRC, Mark Linett and Alan Boyd currently don't have Marilyn's lead vocal for "Honeycomb").  And there could potentially be a couple of live songs (classics or rarities) that could be included as well.  I don't think this would be that expensive, and it could build diehard fans' hopes for a potential Brian's Back box set.

I also agree that there's definitely more from 1963-1965 that could be covered too.

I mean really, at least to this major fan, I think you could really do an interesting package on '74 alone. Using the best available info, what is nearly sure is that these tracks could be used on a 1974 themed set:

"Brian's Jam"
"Good Timin'": a mix only the work that was done in '74 would probably be easy, right?
"Brian's Tune"
"Honeycomb": I'd assume the instrumental is releasable, as I see on this thread Marilyn's vocal isn't available, and was recorded a bit later anyways
"Battle Hymn of the Republic"
"Lucy Jones": the song was released on a Stephen Kalinich album, but I think it'd fit the bill for a '74 set
"California Feelin'" (demo - alternate take)

And I think there is a reasonable chance that there are tapes available to release these (but really who knows?):

"Dr. Tom": apparently an Alan Jardine re-working of "Tom Dooley"
"Good Timin'": version from April
"Ding Dang": this was recorded in June, not sure we know if this is the Love You version or something different

And maybe some Carl and Ricky demos?

And then there's this Dennis stuff (but who owns these, can Brother release them or are they property of Sony due to the fact that these tracks are close to, but not quite Pacific Ocean Blue sessions):

"Dennis' Symphony"
"String Bass Song": early version of "Rainbows"
"My Love Lives On: is this the version from Made In California?
"Long Road"

If a decent chunk of this is available and releasable, I think it'd make an interesting set for the big time Beach Boys fan. Also I wouldn't doubt that there is material around that isn't listed here.

Wow what a pleasant surprise!   Shocked   If this is any indication as to what is very likely to come in future releases, then I'm in awe!  I loved it all and thanks again to Linett, Boyd, and anyone else who made this release possible.   Rock!

Wow! And I mean WOW! Shocked Even clocking in at sub 30 minutes, this digital taster sure has me hungry for more! This set appears to be VERY Dennis heavy, with a few of these tracks with placeholder names evolving into POB material (I about jumped out of my chair when I heard the melody of "Rainbows") and the inclusion of "Rollin' Up to Heaven" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is certainly welcome, two of my favorite circulating 70s BB boots. In a perfect world this would be only the beginning of a larger set celebrating the explorations/experimentations of their post-Holland pre-15 Big Ones oddities.

Can any BB scholars out there shed any light on what-is-what and who-is-on-what or even when-is-what with any of these recordings? "Happy Birthday Roger McGuinn" sounds like some sort of expanded vocal ensemble, and who is the woman Dennis(?) is trying to coax into singing during "Untitled Demo"? My first thought was maybe Christine Perfect, but I would think she would be more ready to sing. Questions, questions, questions....

So, what happened with this? We should have gotten a release in 2024 but obviously didn't. Will the above leaked recordings be part of a larger release for 2025?

These recordings were not leaked. They were officially released, albeit in a minuscule and temporary way.
