Video: Orchestrating Summer Days

I've just produced a video that I hope will serve as an introduction to the way Brian used instruments in 1965 for the Summer Days album. If you like instruments, this is the video for you.
And while much discussion lately has revolved around recent treatments of what's on the tapes, let's look back at how it got on tape to begin with!!

Nice to see you again! Quite the collection of instruments you've got there, and I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Did you ever do a video on Sherry/Sandy? I love the saxy track for Sherry, it's one of my favourites from the era. I'm also reminded of (my) past observations that Jan Berry favoured brass whereas Brian favoured woodwinds. Could be wrong on that, of course.

What a fabulous collection of gear!!
Thanks for posting. I saw you also had a video up about the guitar sound of the BBs, which I haven't come around watching yet. For me the years '65/'66 are in some way the most interesting years in the developements of the BBs records. In those two years they had a certain magical sound that in some way - argh I don't know how to put that into words - combined a lot of melancholia (not sadness!) with their already established upbeat songs. Well, just forget that; I really don't know how to explain what I mean. I guess the gist is that Today! and Summer Days ... are - imo - two very speacial album with regards to the sound. Pet Sounds was already a little different so you could make the case that it was the start of something new.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST
To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Jan used a fuller brass section sometimes, it's true, with more trumpets and trombones than Brian would ever use at once. But Brian got into the extended woodwinds a lot more than Jan did.
I have not done anything on Sherry yet -- I am hoping to at some point to get a chance to hear the track in stereo or in isolation of some sort, because it's just too hard to be precise enough with what's happening with only what we have. I'd rather wait to do it than get something wrong. I could do the Beach Boys' in house version though!

Absolutely terrific intro video, Joshilyn--a perfect setup for going through the SDSN tracks instrument by instrument. Looking forward to the future episodes!
