The interviewer doesn't like Mike, and admits he's essentially trying to get Brian to talk s**t on Mike, and Brian *still* takes the high road.

That's Brian for you. He usually does take the high road, which is one of the many things I admire about him.

The interviewer says Mike took the Beach Boys to court to get exclusive use of the name?  I don't remember that, he always had the license for the name.  He sued Al over Al's unauthorized use of the name.  Maybe I'm not remembering?

There must be something in the Wilson brothers' DNA that resulted in genuine kindness.  When Carl found out that David Marks had been brought into the band the minute he left due to his cancer, he sends David a note letting him know how happy he was for him.  It's like they don't have a mean bone in their body.  What an incredible influence Audree must have had on those three.

What a beautiful picture they use of him! Every other Brian Wilson article usually has a shot of him frowning.

It is truly incredible.  I've pondered many times where they got that trait from.
I really  have a hunch it MUST have been largely due to Audree. She must have been a really, deeply, remarkably sweet person.

I seem to remember an interview where Brian was invited to mock Mike's baldness and replied, "Oh, that's not nice." The only thing I've heard of him not being nice is saying Dennis was dumb.

This reminds me of the Endless Harmony scene where Brian, Al, and Carl are talking and Brian has Al hold his nose to make fun of Mike singing.

This reminds me of the Endless Harmony scene where Brian, Al, and Carl are talking and Brian has Al hold his nose to make fun of Mike singing.

This hilarious incident was, in my mind, basically Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson Part II. Like basically a good-natured, but funny and ball-busting '90s remake. Maybe it wasn't Brian taking the high road, but at least it was a rarity for Brian to do that publicly. And Carl + Al seemed to think it was funny (even if Al was a bit embarrassed to partake). I don't think if there was an interview where Mike was putting down Brian, and there were other Beach Boys present, that they would be nodding in agreement, thinking that it was all in good fun. That's the difference between the two, lest anyone wants to say that Brian is somehow "just as bad" as Mike.

Contrast that with Mike's endless loop of putting down Brian passive-aggressively in interviews, it feels as though Mike is doing endless spoken word remakes of Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson to the nth degree, on repeat infinitely. Like that song is on repeat in Mike's iTunes endlessly for years, and he is freestyling new versions of it to eager interviewers. Maybe Mike's Autotune jab against Brian was Mike kicking the Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson thing up a notch? Could it be that Mike sees it that way? What sad dysfunction. At least Brian knows when to quit with the ribbing.

Imagine if Brian and Mike had performed a live "updated" rendition of Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson in concert during C50 in 2012?

Hi, this is Al. This scene takes place at a typical TWGMTR Beach Boys songwriting session. We're in the midst of pre-production for an upcoming album, when a feud breaks out between Brian and Mike....

- Uh listen Mike, with lyrics like yours, when you open your mouth, it's a bunch of old, crusty song references. It's embarrassing!

- Oh yeah? well at least when I'm singing, it doesn't sound like Mickey Mouse's voice Autotuned by a producer with a giant mullet!

PS - Brian looks super cool here in his leather jacket. I want that to be an album cover.

This is hilarious! Maybe they can revive this bit when they reunite for the 70th anniversary in 2032.

It would be hilarious if someone edited together recent soundbites of Mike smack-talking, into a new, revised 21st century version of this chestnut.  It would be a lot harder to find clips of Brian for the rebuttals, but I suppose there could be a few that could be used. Like when Brian states Mike was a contributing factor in the demise of the Smile album.

In all seriousness, the next time Mike says some insulting thing about Brian to a interviewer, the interviewer should maybe diffuse the situation by asking him if he is auditioning material for a new, updated version of Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson with his insults.  Firstly, Mike would probably appreciate the obscure reference. He probably hasn't thought about that spoken word song in decades. Secondly, it might make him realize that what he is repeatedly saying actually comes off to MANY people as insulting.

Even if Mike doesn't actually think that Brian is personally being hurt or insulted by these comments (which he might be correct about)... in any case, Mike needs to be told by somebody, face-to-face, that his comments often come off as very rude and most of all, harm his OWN reputation to many people... and being that he is obviously, unquestionably very concerned about his reputation, it's very self-defeating.  (Which should theoretically nullify any argument that "it's OK" and "harmless" for him to repeatedly talk that way). Especially if the interviewer has knowledge of, and can reference the Rolling Stone article where Mike asks why people vilify him.  Can somebody communicate that to him this in a lighthearted, nonconfrontational way, hopefully? Is it possible? One can dream…

I can't speak for others, but used to be a fan of Mike's. That now I am only a fan of his best vocals and his best lyrics is due do what he himself did and said all these years. (Partial correction: the demeanour of several of his "fans" does him no good, either.)
I think his book is going to change this - for the worse. And it's a pity.

Same boat I'm in. I will never denigrate his contributions to the band, I've just lost a lot of respect for him over the years.
