God Only Knows on The Voice Finale

God Only Knows was featured tonight as a duet between finalist Jordan Smith and his coach, Adam Levine.  Lots of talk about how beautiful the song is and that they were trying to sound like the Beach Boys and remain true to the original.

Seems like the Boys are getting a fair amount of TV name drops this week.

A great nod to Brian Wilson. Hope he and Al were watching it. The song and it's lyrics (TA) appears to gather more than well deserved compliments as time goes on.

pretty cool..even though some of the people posting comments on the youtube video say that they didn't like the song and one guy said the song was Boring....let's go on there and say "Smiley Smile sent us here"

It was not the worst version I have heard, but it really annoys me when singers change the phrasing of the song - even slightly. The words and notes are there but they cannot touch the emotion of the original. You will never take a song like "God Only Knows" and make it 'your own' so why mess it up? Carl sang it slightly differently from they way Brian was originally showing him. He added a level of feeling that managed to make a great song even better. He sang it so perfectly that it should not be changed.

I'm just so happy ANY time the Beach Boys get their due credit!  I don't care to focus on how the VOICE singer didn't do the song justice....nobody can except Carl.  What I prefer to focus on is how Adam Levine sang the praises of the Beach Boys.  It seems that real, true musicians and/or songwriters all know the talents of the Beach Boys.  My daughters sometimes roll their eyes when I sing the praises of the Beach Boys......So, I am extra happy when two very popular TV shows showcase their work.

Because it's a lovely song to sing. It's fun to sing it, even if you don't match the phrasing of the original recording. Later not even Carl could do it - his singing on, say, the Knebworth version, is probably better than any other person on earth could do it that day, but no match for his performance on the record.

I agree with you to an extent. 

But, I'm all for anything that will turn the younger generation on to real music as opposed to the complete and utter garbage on Top 40.

Nice, almost good. If I know the rules well, contestants are allowed to sing a song that is not among the choices presented by whoever compiles the list. If I were to sing a BBs song, it would be a lesser-known song & sth. that suits my limited range, within the notes I'm comfortable enough to sing & where I can add some touches. This is one of the popular mistakes people do when they enter the vocal contest - they choose at times very difficult songs, either to impress the jury & audience or to outdo themselves, taking risk etc.
