BRIAN WILSON HITS THE ROAD WITH AL JARDINE, BLONDIE CHAPLIN, & BILLY HINSCHE - 10/09/2015 by Howie Edelson
Brian Wilson, with fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin and the band's beloved keyboardist Billy Hinsche (pronounced: HINN-shee), kicks off his fall tour tonight (October 9th) in Flushing, New York at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. Although Wilson was long retired from the road by that point, Queens hosted some of the Beach Boys’ most memorable Northeast concerts of the early-1970’s, with Jardine, Chaplin, and Hinsche on hand for the band’s long-bootlegged performance at Jamaica, Queens’ St. John’s University on March 25th, 1972 and two memorable shows held on May 7th, 1973 at Queens College.
We asked Brian Wilson if he’s ever sat down and thought about how many lives he’s changed through his music: "Yes, I have. When I sing it makes me happy. I think I’ve brought a lot of joy to people, yeah, with my tours, yeah."
Wilson, who has long suffered debilitating bouts of stage fright, admitted to us that he doesn't just worry about singing, he also stresses about talking in between songs and often rehearses what he'll say: "I'm looking forward to making a little bit more humorous jokes and being a little bit more funny, a little bit more funny than it is."
Al Jardine told us that after all these years to have his musical and personal relationship with Wilson intact means the world to him: "Oh, it’s great -- you can’t describe it. We’re still sparkin’ off of each other. We were just talking backstage, just like, y’know, like, y’know, hangin’ out in the nurse’s room where we used to cook up some ideas at El Camino (College). (Laughs) He ran a musical idea by me last show we were at and we were just crackin’ up, and going, ‘Yeah -- that’d be great! We oughta record that! Y’know?’ It’s still charming because he still has that. . . that spark, y’know what I mean?"
Wilson’s usual bandleader Darian Sahanaja will be forced to miss the October dates due to a prior commitment with the reunited Zombies, but West Coast music legend Billy Hinsche, renowned for his work as one third of Dino, Desi, & Billy and decades serving as a Beach Boys bandmate -- not to mention riding shotgun on solo tours by the late-Carl Wilson and Al Jardine -- will be standing in for Sahanaja behind the keyboards. Hinsche told us that despite knowing this music inside and out -- he's still got his work cut out for him on these shows: "It’s going to be probably the most complicated keyboard I’ve ever played in recent memory, because he’s got everything programmed to match the appropriate sounds to match the songs -- so, it’s intense. It’s more than just playing it and singing it and playing. It’s making sure I get the right sound for the appropriate song. For instance, the piano sound for 'Heroes (And Villains)' is not the same sound as the sound for '(Little) Deuce Coupe,' and so on."
Blondie Chaplin’s early-‘70s tenure with the band coincided with the beginning of Brian Wilson’s infamously dark and reclusive periods. But Chaplin maintains, that when it came to music, Wilson was not only able to thrive, but transcend any personal issues outside of the studio: "Whenever he showed (up) in the studio, he was hands-on. I loved that fact when back in Holland, on the Holland (album) sessions -- on ‘Funky Pretty’ -- he was the one who came in there, got the voices together, and ended up giving, like a rough mix. And okay, everybody got nervous because he pushed everything (in the mix) to the max of what it sounded like and the mixing of the voices. I thought it was fantastic! But the other guys got a little bit nervous just about him being so loose with then sound and they tapered it back. But when he was involved and he came in there, it was always a gas and it always made me go: ‘Well, that’s the way it should go, ‘cause he’s hearing it this way.'"

SIDE NOTES
Out now is Music From Love & Mercy, featuring timeless tracks from the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, and the breathtaking original score by Atticus Rose. The critically acclaimed film -- which is now out on DVD and Blu-ray -- chronicles both the Beach Boys leader's mental collapse in the 1960's as well as his imprisonment under the care of Svengali-like psychologist Eugene Landy, and is already garnering Oscar buzz for its principals, including Paul Dano, John Cusack, and Paul Giamatti.
The newly released score features such Beach Boys classics as “Good Vibrations,” God Only Knows,” and “Don’t Worry Baby,” tracks by actor Paul Dano, and “One Kind Of Love,” a ballad written and recorded by Brian Wilson specifically for the film.
