LOL

I kinda thought the same thing (Of all the Beach Boys songs, you chose that?), but then I realized that deep down I actually really dig this song. It's apart of my childhood, a song that my family would listen to on road trips to beach with the windows rolled down....it brings back some really good memories for me. This song is instant nostalgia for many children of the 80s. So I can forgive her for this haha

Child of the 80s too, and yeah, I dug me some "Kokomo". I had a ratty old tape with the Boys on one side and Jan and Dean on the other called Surfin' Songs or something, and another one that my mom got out of a box of tampons with "Kokomo" on it among other hits of the time like "Pump up the Jam" and a MC Hammer song. And that is how I became a fan!

If you or anyone has a photo of the compilation that you mentioned, that would be interesting! I've never heard of Kokomo being on a comp with Technotronic and MC Hammer; I'd love to see it!

Sadly, all my tapes have long since been lost or destroyed, but now you've got me curious so I'll see if I can dig up an image somehow!

My son had two cassette tapes of this compilation, one of which (with "Kokomo" on it) is still in my possession.* The two have since been reissued as a double CD. The rundown is as follows:

Tape/CD 1:

Kaoma - Lambada
Technotronic ft. Felly - Pump Up the Jam
Malcolm McLaren - Something's Jumping in Your Shirt
Bobby Brown - My Prerogative
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam - Little Jackie Wants to Be a Star
Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy
John Hiatt - Have a Little Faith in Me
Bangles - Eternal Flame
Ben Liebrand - Dance Classics "the Mix"
Gloria Estefan - Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Voice)
Zeon Jones - Spin Me Around
Alice Cooper - Poison
Guns N' Roses - Patience
De La Soul - Me Myself and I
Holly Johnson - Americanos
Edelweiss - Bring Me Edelweiss

Tape/CD 2:

Lil' Louis - French Kiss
Double Trouble and Rebel MC - Just Keep Rockin'
Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon
Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's for Real
De Dijk - Nergens Goed Voor
Don Johnson - Tell It Like It Is
The Beach Boys - Kokomo
Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me by Now
Gladys Knight - License to Kill
Carly Simon - It's Hard to Be Tender
Gerard Joling - No More Bolero's
Margaret Singana - We Are Growing
The Incredible E.G. O'Reilly - The Birth of Maudie
Loïs Lane - It's the First Time
Rene Froger en Het Goede Doel - Alles Kan een Mens Gelukkig Maken
Jive Bunny and Mastermixers - Swing the Mood

This is what volume one looked like on cassette (can't find volume two anywhere):

* I've now located the other one. It's not in its original case and the info on the cassette itself is illegible...

I was a kid when it came out and I always liked it.  Now that we know Mike reads this board too, I'm going to go ahead and say it's also my favorite song of all time, Mi... I mean Wrightfan.

This is how I read your post at first, before I went through the whole text... Cheesy

Contemplating now whether I should try to get that picture out of my head or rather draw it and post it here! Grin

I was hesitant to even type where I got the tape, but it was true--of course, I didn't know what a tampon even was back then--apparently it was a place one got Beach Boys and Technotronic hits.

John K, that is an awesome and very 80s collection, but that's not it. As I recollect mine had 10 songs on it, the last of which was "Pump It Up (Here's the News)" by MC Hammer. I almost feel like it was called Maxi Hits, which is pretty funny considering the box they came out of.

I do not believe the version of Wipe Out was the one with the Fat Boys, so clearly they were pulling a fast one on people like me who didn't know better. Darn them to heck!

I would have expected her favorite song to be something more snotty and elitist, so her having Kokomo as her favorite song is a cool thing...makes me kinda like her more.

To be fair, she told me over the phone that her second favorite Beach Boys song was "Stevie" back in 2007. Yeah, me and Anne, we tight, we talk on the phone back in 2007 AND BEYOND.

I would have bet it was due to what researchers call "The Stamos Factor", but she was like 8 years old when that video was on MTV.

The "Wipe Out" recording is probably the Marketts version (the Marketts being the performers of the legendary Batman theme song) which is often mistakenly put on public domain Beach Boys collections.

What Beach Boys songs are in the public domain?  I think the Surfin' Safari album is in the UK, but what else?
