SMiLE - Re-assembled
«
on:
December 18, 2014, 07:40:32 PM »
Been thinking about doing a SMiLE mix like this for a while; all of the pieces of SMiLE fit together in so many interesting ways, and what with Brian adding so many interludes and separate parts, I created a mix of SMiLE that separates each song into separate pieces and intersperses them together, creating an entirely new experience. I know this mix isn't perfect, but I hope this idea inspires someone else to create a possibly-better interpretation of this idea. Special thanks to SMiLE: Reflections for inspiration for the opening, and to Soniclovenoize and JMZ for their amazing SMiLE mixes which I borrowed from. Hope you enjoy!

Very interesting stuff...definitely shows both the strengths and weaknesses in the "modular" approach (much more the former than the latter, however!). But it's a great road map for revealing much of the "musical connective tissue" within the songs. I wonder if there's more that can be done with overlapping sections--I noted a few instances of that here, and they were quite striking.
I hope some of the other folk who've been interested in this "mega-suite" version of SMILE will give a listen and provide more specific ideas, suggestions, critiques, etc. Soniclovenoize has shown great skill with both the "historical" and "hypothethical" approaches to this material, and I find these efforts to be endlessly fascinating. Thanks!

Just about to check it out now............ I've been wanting to do this sort of thing myself for years!
It kind of makes sense... Van Dyke referred to
SMiLE
as a sort of
"patchwork quilt"
which fits.
Edit:
Listening now...... won't have time to listen all the way through right now but:
a) Thanks for the stereo!!
b) Very interesting, difficult to pull off but I'm enjoying this in that I haven't a clue what's next from all these bits that I love.

Who's "Willy Wilson"? A new poster or a poster from the past that changed his name?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Thanks, appreciate the feedback, and glad you like it! As for overlapping, I actually started wanting everything to fade into each other but then I realized it sounded more like other SMiLE combos when they are layered on each other with synced up beats or melodies. Also I feel the same way, I would love to see others try this method if only to hear the different ways each bit can be interlocked to find some really cool new combinations.

Some nice things..but I´m more a straight 12-13 songs album kind of guy.. If you just put songs in a certain kind of way you could also have "suite" album.. any way that´s my opinion..nice job indeed..maybe some other posters like master - Selt can have a go with more success with this kind of approach..

I am always interested in hearing another of the millions of ways the Smile music can be heard. It never gets old!

Regarding the SMiLE credits list above. There are two musicians who are missing from the list. One was considered a Wrecking Crew member that played bass on a lot of Beach Boys records and the other had a "woo-woo" machine named after him and played on Good Vibrations. Who knows who they are? I'm surprised the bass player was overlooked and I attribute it to an oversight, though maybe he wasn't around during the SMile Sessions (I doubt it).

Wow, very cubist! SMiLE completely reduced to it's segmented origins. Adhering to no rules of construction that I can detect, except that it's at its very nature a music of kaleidescoping segments -- here, tossed like a thousand dice onto the SMiLE game board.
It surely soothes one's attention deficit desires, but also leaves one feeling quite disoriented. Where everything heard is familiar but with no definition or landmarks to give one any sense of bearing. It's SMiLE -- Through the Looking Glass.

Thanks for the shout-out to Reflections! I'm downloading this now, I'll give more specific feedback when I've heard the whole thing. But off the bat, I greatly appreciate your alternate approach to mixing this album! I wish more people did likewise.
My next mix, I hope, will also be a "megasuite" approach. I hope to use all the various Heroes segments to link the other songs together in some new interesting way. Hopefully your mix can give me some ideas for that.

No problem, it is well deserved, one of the most intriguing and unique smile mixes I've heard! Thanks for the kind words and hope you like it! Funny, I was thinking of doing the exact same thing, hope this mix inspires in some way, looking forward to hearing it!
