The BBs just don't always click with people, but they still seem to have some songs that non-fans nonetheless can't help liking anyhow.

For instance, my mom (even as a child of the 60s and a TAMI Show attendee) isn't particularly a BB fan, even though I've tried my darndest to get her to appreciate The BBs more.  But, she still really likes the song "Don't Worry Baby".  Apparently she always has.  And I did manage to get her into Pacific Ocean Blue.

Does anyone else have any similar experiences? I'd imagine "God Only Knows" would be up there.

Aren't we ALL fans here?

I'm talking about fans on this board who know OTHER people who aren't particularly BB fans, but how those other people still can't help really digging some BB songs.

My girlfriend isn't a fan but always perks up when I play WIBN or GOK. She can't help singing along with the latter but she'd never admit she likes either song.

Most of my friends growing up did not like Beach Boys. This was in the late 60s and 70s. Most always liked a couple songs like Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice and later Long Promised Road and Feel Flows.

I think most people who have heard Beach Boys music fall into this category: they'd probably never listen to an entire album (unless perhaps it was a hits compilation), but they'll start singing when I Get Around or Wouldn't It Be Nice come on the radio.

One day, after listening closely to GoK and WIBN from a hits comp, it just clicked with me - and I had to buy Pet Sounds. Perhaps if people listened a little closer to the hits they'd become as obsessed as we are....but who wants a world full of people like us? Grin

I think a lot of peeps were like that. They couldn't dare admit to liking a very un-hip band like the Beach Boys, but yeah, they do seem to know the words. Wink

I have a friend who's mostly into prog rock and who while acknowledging The Beatles influence believes they don't even compare to bands like Yes and Genesis. When I informed him of my love for the Beach Boys his response was along the lines of:
"The Beach Boys suck. They have one good song - Wouldn't It Be Nice. That's it."

i argue with a friend of mine all the time bout the Beach Boys -- she hates 'em.  But she digs Good Vibrations.

How could any sane human being not like God Only Knows?

I lent Surf's Up to a young female colleague who is into the Doors, heavy metal, etc. with specific instructions to listen to Long Promised Road and Feel Flows. She was suitably impressed Smiley

I once met a guy who hated the Beach Boys but he loved Do You Like Worms, because it doesn't sound like the Beach Boys.

I had a roommate once who didn't really 'get' the BBs but went bonkers for "Heroes and Villains", of all songs. Always thought that was funny.

Pet Sounds has a certain sameness, feel about it, so I do understand your friend's comment from that angle. As far as the songs themselves, to me WIBN, GOK, HT, IJWMFTT, IWFTD do not sound the same. Funny how we all hear the same music differently.

Hmmmm.

When I find out who these people are - our friendship is OVER.  Wink

Hey Little Tomboy is creepy. Banging women by the pool is fun and conjures up warm summer thoughts a Beach Boys song should.

My mother's not a huge fan, but she loves Darlin' and Breakaway, probably for their propulsive energy. She was at the Brian Wilson Smile conecert in Montreal with my brother and I, but the Smile tracks were not to her taste. My brother likes God Only Knows and absolutely loves the pared down Love and Mercy Brian has performed live.
