Beach Boys Solo Survivor #2 Winner: Bruce Johnston's I Write The Songs
«
on:
July 16, 2014, 10:21:35 AM »
Welcome back, one and all, to the second thread of the Beach Boys Solo Survivor.
The Solo Survivors are going to tackle the main solo albums of members of the Beach Boys. This will not include solo albums released prior to membership in the Beach Boys. This will also not include works done by members who were participating in different groups (ie David Marks in The Moon or The Marksmen) nor will it include "Best Of" albums or rehash albums (ie Summertime Cruisin' by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston will not be included. This also means we will not be including Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE or I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.) Lastly, we will not be including EP's or Unreleased Albums.
Some of the Solo Survivor albums may be hard to come across. Smilers are encouraged to locate legal copies of the solo albums. I expect these rounds to go quicker with less voting than normal. No big deal.
So without further ado...
Quote
Going Public is Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston's third and final solo album, and the only one recorded after becoming a member of the band. It was released in 1977 under Columbia Records. Bruce proves to the world what Beach Boys fans have known from the get-go: namely, he hasn't a rock 'n' roll bone in his body.
Per the usual, vote for your LEAST FAVORITE TRACK. The track with most votes will be voted off.
Tally on July 17th. If you can bring yourself to vote.
I Write the Songs
Deidre
Thank You Baby
Rendezvous
Won't Somebody Dance with Me
Disney Girls
Rock and Roll Survivor
Don't Be Scared
Pipeline
I don't own this album and it doesn't appear to be available on youtube. So I will only be a caretaker in this thread.
Enjoy!

It's on Spotify, probably the easiest way to access it.

I vote Won't Somebody Dance With Me. A horrfic song.
As a side note I really like the rest of this album; don't get why it's ragged on so much.

Won't Somebody Dance with Me
And while not great, Bruce's version of I Write the Songs is easily the best thing here as far as I'm concerned. Being mostly just his voice and the keyboard keeps his tacky production choices at bay.

Bruce had the ability to make a better album than this. Seems like he could have come up with something along the lines of Garfunkel's BREAK AWAY had he pushed himself. GOING PUBLIC is a lazy listless album.

The whole album belongs in the garbage...after being set on fire. Worst BB solo album IMHO, by far.

It's just so awkward and not in a good (BW-like) way...somehow Brian coulda made that tune work on Love You or Adult Child

Won't Somebody Dance With Me
I'm saddened at the exclusion of Blondie Chaplin's 1977 solo album, especially considering it fits all the criteria to be included
