Has there ever been a two hour long documentary done on Brian or the Beach Boys? I'm not sure how you could fill two hours on Dennis and hold the interest of a non Dennis or non Beach Boys fan. If you filled it with music, the rights costs would be prohibitive. That alone would be a limiting factor.

I dunno... he had a very interesting life. Like life under Murry, his initial success with the Beach Boys, his increasing songwriting skill, Charles Manson, all the girls he was with, his slow decline, You Are So Beautiful, Pacific Ocean Blue, Denny vs Mike, his relationship with the rest of the Beach Boys, Bambu, Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin (as sad as that is), Christine McVie, Shawn Love, his death, etc.
I think it could be done, but that's just my opinion

Besides most Beach Boys documentaries I've seen are Brian centered and "Love and Mercy" is gonna be centered around him. so this is gonna be different

Exactly, and there's been many long Beach Boys documentaries like An American Band and Endless Harmony and all that.
I think Denny deserves a detailed, accurate documentary just as much as Brian

Depends on what you mean by documentary, but each "Brian Wilson: Songwriter" DVD is around 2-3 hours long. I'm certain a 2 hour Dennis documentary could hold any anyone's attention.
An extended version of The Real Beach Boy would be incredible. Would there be any chance that a 2 hour version could be released on DVD? It kills me that over the years The Real Beach Boy has only been available to view on Japanese websites and, more recently, youtube. I know there were issues with money, rights, etc...could those hurdles be jumped this time around?

that would be great too, but wouldn't it be neat if they showed it in theaters though?

Indeed. No matter how it's initially released (whether in a theatre or on the BBC again), it would be great if a physical copy could be available for purchase at some point.

'Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy' from 2008 is my go to Dennis documentary. Very well done IMO. Aside from maybe some extended music segments, is there anything else to be achieved by making another program?

Thanks for the nice comment. FYI The Real Beach Boy premiered on BBC TV in 2010. Whomever posted it on Youtube mistakenly put it at 2008...now of course thousands of people believe that was the date of it's release. But 2010 is correct.

Thanks for the comment. A physical release would be the goal, as well as a festival or art house screen run. That was always the plan with an expanded version. A 90 minute version for the festivals, and a two-hour home DVD version. We've made progress toward that and then have seen it go through our hands like sand. Multiple times. Some major entities were getting behind it after it's highly successful run on BBC TV...it was nominated for a British TV award. The Drummer film came about, which caused some of the chips that were leaning towards us to be thrown in on that project. Now that the Drummer film is not happening I'm starting get some people calling again about the Dennis documentary and the potential expansion and re-release. But yes major hurdles remain, rights issues, financial concerns etc... Our production team is intact and ready to go at it again using the orig. version as our template. An expanded version would have more music, more footage, more details about DW's life and art. A home version might even have some unreleased music in it. But this is on a pure specualation level at this point. Enjoy the orig. 2010 cut...We're very proud of it. Thanks to all, including Retro and Littlebird for the interest in the film and in Dennis.

Jon,
What happens once the petition is signed?
I am unfamiliar with how this type of thing works, so I'd like to understand a bit more so I can make an informed decision.
I hope to be recording music soon for another film project, but a petition is not something I am familiar with.

This is gonna get me in trouble...
Let's get this out of the way. The quality of Dennis' Beach Boys' music was second only to Brian's, and his solo album is second to none; no other BB solo album even comes close to Pacific Ocean Blue. Dennis' life was fascinating and a human tragedy. It should be documented/shared/viewed on film.
I really enjoyed The Real Beach Boy documentary; it's very good. But, since the topic came up....If there is going to be another Dennis Wilson filmed project, I would like to see a one hour documentary. If it is one hour long with commercials, how many minutes of actual material is that? Forty-five or forty-seven minutes? On the music side, Dennis only released a dozen or so songs with The Beach Boys and one solo album. On the personal side you have his lifestyle, the Manson thing, his relationships/marriages, and his addictions. A good documentarian should be able to cover everything artistically and efficiently in one hour.
I'd like to see something that could be shown on VH1 or whatever in a one hour time slot. You always have room for any extra bonus material like full song performances on the physical DVD. Most documentaries don't show entire songs anyway. I don't wanna just come out and say that Dennis' life doesn't warrant more than an hour, I don't mean to infer that. As a BB diehard I'd like a three hour documentary! But, sometimes the best documentaries are the tightly woven, right-to-the-point, no fluff ones.

Thanks for the correction Jon. Yeah, I referenced the YT links for the date.
Credit also to the BBC for such a fine product I'm guessing?

I'd love another Dennis movie. Really don't think this petition is going to do anything though. Signed anyway.
It would because Jess and I are in contact with the person behind it, and if enough people signs the petition, he might go ahead with the project!
SO. The person you know is Jon Stebbins?

Added my signature. Even if there aren't going to be 1.000/more votes, it's still a good idea. Well done, Rei & Jess! (Although I disagree about getting the documentary in Blu-Ray, it's a very expensive format, hate to lose much money.)

Seems like the whole idea behind the petition is confused, and even changes every now and then.
To me, the original 2010 documentary was superb, well-judged and the duration was perfect. If there's more to be said, make a self-contained follow-up.
A physical release of the 2010 documentary would be lapped up, especially if it could be done in conjunction with a release of the 2004 Wouldn't It Be Nice documentary. Both were backed by the BBC, if I remember right?

The idea for this "petition" changes by the hour. Better for Jon to ignore it and just continue his work on DW projects independently.

Sorry, but I think Mr. Stebbins can decide for himself whether ignore this petition or not. And what is so difficult about adding a vote? No one will lose anything by doing so. As I've said, if it doesn't work, so be it. If yes - then good will to have your help among collective signings.
