I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Surfin Safari and Surfin USA LPs. They have a garage rock feel to them that Brian moves way past by Surfer Girl. A few exceptions, like Custom Machine scattered in there.

I like Surfin Safari pretty much the way it is. But if there were any period songs I would include, it would be Luau and Barbie. Not sure what I would replace though.

Any order or lineup's fine with me, as long as it doesn't include "Cuckoo Clock".  God, I hate that song.
Come to think of it, I'd rather not hear "Chug A Lug" again, either - so toss that turkey, as well.
And "Surfin'" sucks all sped up the way it is on the LP...so leave it off, or fly in the original-speed master.
I'm all set now.

"Ten Little Indians" is offensive when you think about it (even when trying to listen to it keeping in mind that it was recorded in 1962 ).

I'm glad that "Ten Little Indians" wasn't the "Surfin' Safari" album song chosen for an early-90s drum machine style remake on "Summer in Paradise."

Surfer, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but your "ideal Surfin' Safari album" contains songs released months, years, and in one case, three decades after the Surfin' Safari album.  Now if you had asked, "What would be your ideal Beach Boys surfing-themed compilation album?", then you would be free to include songs from all over the Beach Boys catalogue.  But by tying your question back to the 1962 Surfin' Safari album, and then including a sonq from 1992 ("Still Surfin'") you're just asking for people to flame you...

Agree entirely with Lee - the subject was the Surfin' Safari album, which was released October 1962. Now, you could have "Surfer Girl" on it, no problems. Not the version that charted high, granted, but "Surfer Girl" nonetheless. But including tracks not even written by 10/62... suppose I said Pet Sounds would have been improved immeasurably by the inclusion of "Midnight's Another Day". I'd get royally ripped and quite rightly so.

Interesting again how different brains have different impressions from the same recordings. I love "Cuckoo Clock" but don't like "Cindy" at all. It's a bit like "Lana" on Surfin' USA which is in the same vein. "Chug-A-Lug" is fun to me too.

Aaaand... IMHO Surfin' is much more fun to listen to sped up! The original speed is too slow!

Absolutely and deservedly so - "From There to Back Again" is the jewel in the Pet Sounds Crown, not MAD, how could you think otherwise?

Been many years since I listened to either version of  "Surfin "  So how much is the LP cut sped up and beyond that is it the same take on both.?  Im getting senile I guess.. Forgot about that issue..THX

How funny you should ask...yesterday I spent a bit of time comparing all the various CD releases of the song, so assuming the CDs were mastered with the tapes playing at the correct speed, it appears the master for the original Candix/X single was sped-up by one semitone (a half-step, from the key of G to the key of A flat), and that change was retained by Capitol for the "Surfin' Safari" album.

Incidentally, the plot thickens when you consider that the two rehearsal tapes of "Surfin'" - the first from the Wilson garage (included on the '93 box, "Hawthorne", and MIC) and the second from the Morgans' home in mid-September '61 - are both in the key of A flat.  SO, they dropped it a semitone for the master recording, then the master recording got sped up by a semitone for release! Coincidence? Maybe...

Ooh! Ooh! Add "Luaua" to my lineup!  So, drop "Cuckoo Clock", "Chug-A-Lug" and "Ten Little Indians", add "Land Ahoy", "Luaua", and "Baker's Man". That way it's all from the same timeframe or earlier.

The Safari album is not very good IMO. Most of what Brian wrote with Usher is just garbage, Dennis can't keep proper time and the vocals are not recorded that well. The leap in quality from Safari to USA is staggering.

Well said. The original poster questioned why the thread had turned into a food fight but in my opinion the very first post in the thread consisted mainly of a well-known brand of tinned luncheon meat immortalised by a 1970 comedy sketch by the Monty Python team. And it's not the first.

Generally, it's Surfer's fault that people don't take him seriously. I tried to give him advice not make these pointless one-off threads & use search function or post his questions in the "Thread for insignificant ?-s", but he totally ignored it. I think at this point, everyone will agree with me that he begs for attention. Hence stuff like "All of Dennis songs relate to my feelings towards my father!" & obvious reactions from the rest. There's no way Surfer didn't know the word "father". Sso, Mr. Manning, take back your apology, you're good.
