I guess you could fill that list easily with only Brian and Dennis stories....

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Terrible article. Typical Fox News crap.  With all the sex, drugs and rock n roll of the 60s and this is their list? Awful!

If only 10% of the stories about him are true, Dennis Hopper deserves to be at numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and probably 6.

7, 8, 9 & 10 would of course be occupied by another Dennis.

So, I've finally come to understand that Dennis Hopper was really playing himself in Apocalypse Now.

You are right. Brian simply doesn't belong in any 'went wild' list, because he didn't go wild at all. He self-medicated because of an obvious mental illness. He got traumatised in his childhood; one might perhaps speak of post-traumatic stress disorder (that made and makes itself known in the form of hearing voices that threaten him). With many people in the world of show business, substance use and behaviour have a very different relationship - which is more the target of Foxnews' sensationalism, I guess.

Brian never destroyed hotel rooms, or spent his leisure time with lots of groupies. And as far as I know, he wasn't keen on using substances before the eyes of any wider public. He was a desperate man in times of emotional turmoil.

Needless to say I don't like the article.

Yeah, he really deserves it based on The American Dreamer documentary alone (it's on youtube).

Blue Velvet, too.  LOL

Why is Jack Nicholson on the list?? He wasn't even vaguely famous until Easy Rider (in 1969!) and despite his 'hell-raising' he's always been completely grounded, unlike a million other rock stars and actors who could've been on the list instead... He didn't lose it at all.

Seriously, what a sh*t list.

B-Dub
The 4th time I see Brian being called like this. Tried searching the board for its origin, couldn't find anything. Any idea what's that mean? Obviously, B is Brian & Dub is..? Reference to the studio work?

Musical genius Brian Wilson crafted the critically acclaimed album “Pet Sounds”… and then he disappeared.

Bullshit right there. Unless it was a different Brian Wilson all over Good Vibrations, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, Do It Again, Breakaway, Sunflower, Surf's Up and Carl & The Passions.

There's the whole thing about the SMiLE myth that people want to preserve, despite it being a bit factually incorrect. Also, I think nowadays it's just easier to leave it at that when explaining Brian's "breakdown" to people who don't know the story. I've been guilty of it a few times - when I'm trying to tell people why I'm so fanatical about the band, when you get to the SMiLE saga, it's not really as understandable to explain how legendary and important SMiLE was, and how it was a huge factor in Brian's retreat, and then say....but he DID contribute regularly to Beach Boys albums for years after SMiLE, and the quality of the work barely diminished. It kind of lessens the importance of SMiLE to the Beach Boys story. I'm curious to see how the new movie handles it.

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but I think the people/journalists/critics who say that Brian Wilson "disappeared" after SMiLE are speaking on a mostly commercial basis. After SMiLE/"Heroes And Villains", which was mostly written/recorded in 1966, Brian only had one song that he composed crack the Top 20, which was "Darlin".

When you look at the number of Top Ten and Number One songs (and albums) that Brian Wilson composed/produced from 1963-1966, then basically NONE (TWGMTR being an exception) in the ensuing 47 years, it makes it an easy comparison. I think even Brian would concede that he "disappeared" for many of those years and, if he was honest, would probably express disappointment at his lack of commercial success post-1966.

Very good points.

I guess if we're talking from a commercial stand point and to the general public, I guess he did disappear

Pretty sure I'm responsible for this (I'm sorry).  Think "B. Dubya" as in "B.W." but shortened to give the man more street cred.

Although Brian surely was active during those years after Smile, I personally place a lot of significance and meaning in the fact that albums no longer credited him as producer.

Man i love reading all this cool sh*t about that craaaazy Pet Sounds genious who lost it trying to make his Sgt. Pepper and didn't leave his room for like a decade. He totally went wild and sh*t. Did you guys know that Paul McCartney said that like Pet Sounds is his favorite album or something and that that song God Knows Only Me is like his favorite song of all time? Like whoa i gotta check that sh*t out one day cuz Paul is THE MAN. But man this Beach Boy guy is wild & crazy. Crazy GENIOUS! Amirite or what?? I heard he would record like 45 tracks and sh*t on his albums and he was like always high in the studio. CRAAAAZY.
