The original reason I heard for all the boots being so bad was that the master was heat damaged. However, as said info came from one Elliott, B., it has to be questioned in the light or subsequent nonsense.

Alan and Mark had access to an ADAT copy of the original 3-track, so perhaps "Back Home" on MIC was mastered from that.

Too bad Alan and Mark never came on here to answer questions about MIC. 'Course I don't remember them coming here after the SMiLE Sessions was released either. Guess I can't blame them after all the negative comments about both of them. Though I think there were more positive comments than negative, but still. Guess I can't blame them. But still, the fans have questions, though they are in no way obligated to answer them. But still.....

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

OK, dumb question. What's ADAT?

Alesis Digital Audio Tape. The ADAT recorder, first introduced in the early '90s, could record 8 tracks of 16-bit 44.1k digital audio on a Hi-Fi VHS videocassette. Two or more ADATs could be linked together for additional tracks. A few years later, the Type II ADAT was introduced, which could record at the higher bit-depth and resolution of 20-bits and 48k (personally, I think that's the most anyone really needs...when you get to higher bit depths and resolution, to my ears, you start to lose some of the warmth and gain some nasty harshness - but that's just me). Alesis was actually the propietary brand for the recording machine, not the tape, which was manufactured by several companies such as Sony, BASF, Ampex/Quantegy, and yes, Alesis. Alannis Morrisette's blockbuster "debut" Jagged Little Pill was recorded on 16-bit "Type I" ADAT. I've got four of the Type IIs and I love 'em: warm, clear audio with no harsh side effects.

See, that there's the basic difference between Craig & I: I would have just said "Google it".  Grin

Actually, that's not true - back in the day I'd have said something like "Oh FFS, you want to be spoon-fed everything, dontcha ? Try Googling, it'll take maybe 30 seconds, or get mummy to do it for you. Jeeezzzz..."

But... I'm not like that any more.  Smiley

Thanks for that. I had heard of DAT before, but not ADAT.
