Mike has done much to gain that accolade. This story didn't need a villain.

I think Mike's passing resemblance to Eddie Haskell from Leave It To Beaver did him no favors from the very start.  LOL

This is a classic quote:

'When we had our first national hit with Surfin’ Safari Mike was already married and he was already bald and he had a kid. So he was an old man already, 21, 22 years old. He was the old man of the group.'

Nice article, and really clear and concise answers from DM, with a lot of respect and humble self reflection.

And Al left the band to work in an aircraft factory - his talents are legion!

He's not the villian most make him out to be in greatly exaggerated form, though. Worst thing the guy ever did wasn't even related to the Beach Boys.

What a lovely interview.  I really appreciate it.  Good questions and pretty darn illuminating answers.  Dave might have the best memory that is the least corrupted by the myth of any of them.

The more I read about David, the more I like him. I'm as guilty as a lot of other fans of underestimating his contribution to the group in the early years, it's nice he is getting some recognition now.

Hmm...Is this beginning to sound more and more like the powers of BRI are trying to woo Michael back into the real BB?

David isn't a member of BRI, thus your reasoning is spurious .

He's refering to the incident about the woman who wasn't Mike's daughter even through she blatantly, obviously was.

I find it a little odd that when Mike and Bruce resumed their version of the Beach Boys, David wasn't asked to come along being that he had a history with the touring band.  Like if during the reunion, somebody had said that the band would eventually split in two, I would have bet on Dave going with Mike's band rather than Brian's.

Is Mike bald? Can't say I've noticed.

AGD- my thanks to you and Jon Stebbins for (continually) confirming David is a great, great guy - that's the impression I get from the way David communicates in interviews (including this one and his fantastic involvement in the Denny (Real BB) BBC doc).  Not having met David, I can only rely on what I see/read and insights provided by the genuine experts here.

I was thrilled to get a copy of his recent solo effort and got a big kick out of the enthusiatic email he later sent with links to his prefered mixes.   A real treat and really engaging from a fan POV.

My line about Al was a dumb joke (I'm full of 'em) about Al's mythical early years - the true story beautifully and generously clarified in your "In the beginning..." piece on Bellagio (which I've read many times).

Apologies for any miscommunication on my part - it's never my intention to vex/annoy when I come here; just to learn and wave my freak flag - thanks again - Alan
