BADJ. Pronounced Badge. I win.

However, I REALLY hope they announce some UK dates. My dad is a big Jeff Beck fan and might actually come along as a result! If not, his loss.

I now know what I'll be doing on the evening of October 30th.  Jeff Beck is one of my favorite guitar players.  I've never seen him play live, but I do own the Live at Ronnie Scott's DVD, which is excellent.  I still can't get my head around how his unique style of playing will fit with Brian Wilson's vocal oriented songs.  Tickets aren't cheap...$90.00 for most seats or $60.00 for upper balcony, but I'll find a way to find the cash for this.

I got my VIP package for the Houston show last night. I plan to do some Beck-tracking in the next month, since I don't think I own anything by Jeff Beck. Any recommendations for where to start?

It depends on what type of music you like, really.  My personal favorite is Blow by Blow, which is a rock / jazz fusion instrumental album from '75, produced by George Martin.  Some very tasty guitar playing on that one.  If you don't like that fusion thing, he was more into heavier rock in the late '60s with the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert, & Appice.  Of course, his short stint with The Yardbirds produced a few nice songs.  His rendition of Puccini's Nessun Dorma, from his latest album, still gives me goosebumps.  These days he incorporates every style that he ever played into his guitar playing.  No one else, that I know of, plays like Jeff Beck.

Truth, Blow By Blow, a good Yardbirds collection (the two disc Ultimate in either its inexpensive import form or the now-rather-rare Rhino version would do), then Wired (apparently out of print but good secondhand copies can be found online).  Then you could branch out into things like Beck Bogert Appice or the '80s records.

Speaking of the '80s, here's the video for his 1985 track "Ambitious" as it ran on the USA network's old Night Flight show, complete with Rhonda Shear commentary at the beginning and end and concluding with a short interview with Jeff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbpQf22c494

During MTV's heyday one saw many a video with unusual celebrity cameos, but this one really has a lot of 'em: Donny Osmond, the 5th Dimension's Marilyn McCoo, Herve Villechaize, Parker Stevenson, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Cheech Marin to name a few.  Plus, Jeff's solo reminds you where Eddie Van Halen got about 75% of his style.

Also worth remembering: in many an interview Les Paul said Beck was his favorite rock guitarist.

Get the Live at Ronnie Scotts DVD. Good all around exposure to his music plus jamm with Eric C.

Hey Little Tomboy is creepy. Banging women by the pool is fun and conjures up warm summer thoughts a Beach Boys song should.
