Just to give the guys in the ESQ thread a place to get their geek on.
Oh, and Star Wars was best when Lucas farmed it out to others.

Lucas takes a lot of crap these days, but least he made a masterpiece in the original Star Wars.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

The problem with Lucas is generally that he's not really great at directing actors or writing convincing dialogue. Somehow it worked with the original Star Wars, but the prequels are generally cringe-worthy at times. He's great at setting up action shots and set pieces, but he's really not up to snuff otherwise. He's a visionary with trouble translating that vision.

I would agree with that somewhat, Lucas has great ideas but can't express them through his personality that well. I thought the "old" Lucas who could overcome those problems came back for episode 3 when he decided to not comprise his story for kids like the other prequels.

and another masterpiece in "American Graffiti". I think that is his best work as a director and I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan.

I'm cautiously optimistic that JJ Abrams will improve upon the prequels. His Trek films give me hope.
