A one disc album that covers all the phases of their career
«
on:
March 04, 2013, 01:15:38 AM »
Most Beach Boys compilations focus on the 1962-1967 material. Some also include a couple of 70s hits and/or Kokomo. There are a few that specifically cover The Brother Years. But there has never really been a one disc compilation that covers all the phases of their career, right?
So try to compile a 20 song album using the following guidelines:
Songs 1-5 from the pre-Pet Sounds years (1961-1965)
Songs 6-10 from Pet Sounds & The Smile Sessions (1966-1967)
Songs 11-15 from the post-Smile, pre-Endless Summer years (1967-1974)
Songs 16-20 from the post-Endless Summer years (1974-now; solo tracks allowed)

1 "Surfin' U.S.A."
2 "Farmer's Daughter"
3 "In My Room"
4 "California Girls"
5 "You're So Good To Me"
6 "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"
7 "Wouldn't It Be Nice"
8 "God Only Knows"
9 "Good Vibrations"
10 "Heroes And Villains"
11 "Do It Again"
12 "I Went To Sleep"
13 "This Whole World"
14 "Surf's Up"
15 "Sail On, Sailor"
16 "It's OK"
17 "Good Timin'"
18 "Getcha Back"
19 "Kokomo"
20 "From There To Back Again"
I gotta ask? Is this a disc I would want? Or a disc that would be a sampler with the appropriate high points? Because if we are looking for favorite songs, I'd put "Farmer's Daughter" and maybe "You're So Good To Me" as part of 1 thru 5. And also, I think 62-65 should be represented by like 7 or 8 tracks, with post
Endless Summer
getting maybe 3 songs. Giving their mostly weaker late career equal precedent to the era that made them who they were seems kinda goofy.

Either way is fine, but I went for personal favorites.

Yeah, but the idea behind the five songs for each is to shed equal light on every phase, not just the early 60s which are (IMO) already overrepresented on most excisting compilations. The years since Endless Summer might not have been their best, but still: that's 39 years and 25 studio albums (including solo albums).

Anyone including more than one or two songs from Pet Sounds and Smile is on more drugs than I've ever seen in my life (which is not much). s'not especially comprehensive to piss away a third of your disc on one brief period of their career that the person listening to this probably knows well due to having it shoved down their throat, anyway.
Edit: Just saw the initial post. Again, this don't even make sense to me. If you're gonna obsess over a year and a half of their career, may as well give them a second disc of just Pet Sounds and the Smile fanmix of your choice.

CHECK THIS, YOU DICK:
01. Surfin' USA (because surfin')
02. Surfer Girl (because ballad and growth even though it predates surfin')
03. Little Deuce Coupe (because these are my car songs)
04. Help Me, Rhonda (because Al Jardine lead and because growth)
05. California Girls (because continued music growth with familiar topics)
06. Wouldn't It Be Nice? (because oh my God what the hell is going on)
07. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (because the world doesn't understand me and sh*t's really starting to get weird bawww)
08. Good Vibrations (because good vibrations)
09. Heroes And Villains (because heroes and villains)
10. Busy Doin' Nothin' (because sh*t got weird but the songwriting skills remained and the intricacy of the arrangements was still there you idiot and the whole "lol brian walson went crazy and lost all his talent and hid in bed" theory is total, total sh*t)
11. All I Wanna Do (because sh*t got weird but the songwriting skills remained and the intricacy of the arrangements was still there you idiot and the whole "lol brian walson went crazy and lost all his talent and hid in bed" theory is total, total sh*t)
12. Forever (because omg Dennis where did
that
come from oh man you have seventy songs just as good who knew who knew oh what a world)
13. A Day In The Life Of A Tree (because this is when sh*t got really weird, but again, sh*t stayed really, really good)
14. Sail On, Sailor (because they were briefly a somewhat lame 70s rawk guitaw sowos band but did so while still having several good songs)
15. The Trader (because zomg Carl Wilson what are you doing you can't write songs this good what the f*** is going on)
16. Roller Skating Child (because they really sounded like this for a few years and, again, kept up teh awsum)
17. Goin On' (because even amid their not good albums, they were still writing good shtuff y'know y'know)
18. your choice of Getcha Back or Kokomo (because the mother fucking 80s)
19. Love And Mercy (the later piano and vocals only recording) (because unfaltering skillz and the ability to write a universal masterpiece of B-Pain)
20. Summer's Gone (because a 70 year old Beach Boys is still often doing it better than most modern bands and because obligatory ending track with somewhat poignant message in all of this)
YEAH.
