Al sang that when they did it in 83. There was a version of it released on a Sunkist promo lp. I think there's a youtube clip of them singing it in Seattle - Brian dances!
One of my very favourite BBs videos.  Cheesy (And one of my favourite songs e-v-e-r by anyone, anyway.  Cheesy)

CLICK to see Brian dance like Donkey Kong

I guess he was heavily on stuff there, but it's cool nevertheless. His passion for the tune is authentic, after all. Look at his face.  Azn
Yes, love that video and Brian at the one minute mark, no matter what on earth he was on, is definitely a happy man. Also, it's obvious Dennis is in a bad way but man could he still pound those drums

Aye, my attention was drawn by Dennis. I guess this gig was pretty darn close to the end? But what a powerhouse, even in the bad shape he was visibly in. Just a lovely fun performance all round.  Did I blink or was Mike absent?

That "Runaway" is the perfect example of the Landy dilemma. Just look at Brian - he's trim, clean, singing, clapping, dancing(!) - and you think "Alright!"

But, did they know what was being put into Brian's brain that was getting him like that? I mean, who was gonna step in and stop the progress, the physical progress? In that video, just look at Bruce looking over at Brian. Bruce was so inspired, almost in awe. They all were. This is what they were all waiting for since probably 1967-68. If they only knew...

I was at that show, and I was really surprised Brian would get up from the piano and dance like that! He looked so much more trim than he had just a few months earlier, of course I knew Landy was back in the picture, but I had no idea at the time what a control freak he was. I really felt Brian was on his way back at the time. On the flip side, I knew nothing about Dennis' personal life, had no idea he was in bad shape. He may not have looked his best, but he sure could pound those drums. The girls sure were screaming for him. I have the video from that concert, and there are a few rough spots. Wouldn't it Be Nice starts with Brian singing lead, then he drops out unexpectedly on the second verse, IIRC Al takes over but not quickly enough. You just never knew what Brian was going to do onstage.

What gets me is when you watch the Live at Knebworth DVD, 3 years previously, Dennis and Brian's roles are reversed.
I can't remember if Landy was approached to sort Dennis out and he refused but I see from AGDs timeline that Brian went to Hawaii for treatment in Jan '83
If that footage is what the result is after a number of months, then it makes me wonder what he could have done for Dennis but maybe he would have rebelled against that level of care.

Did Dennis ever express an opinion about Brian being reunited with Landy? Or just too lost in his own problems to care?

I noticed that when the BB's started doing Wipe Out as an encore in 1987-88, Carl was not onstage.

...just as he didn't appear in the video clip.
yup. I think that speaks volumes.

Actually, the first time I saw 'em do it live was in '87, before the record had even been released...and Carl played keyboards in the back.  Eventually, he had to play lead guitar on it, after Jeff left.  What a trooper!

Yeah, I saw Carl play that "Wipe Out" guitar solo at a concert or two. Carl and the band also played a little "Pretty Woman" riff when the cheerleaders were introduced by Mike.

It's funny but the time frame of this thread, 1985-1998, was the period of time when Brian actually looked great (except for 1994-95), yet he was barely with the band live in concert. However, I remember a concert, I believe it was January 1989 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, with Chicago opening, and all of a sudden, Brian Wilson was announced, and he comes out with a Fender bass stra pped on. He performed three songs with a small backup band, "Love And Mercy", "Walkin' The Line", and "Melt Away". I was going crazy, yelling and screaming and clapping, almost having a heart attack, and everybody around me was sitting on their hands, looking at me like I was nuts. I swear some people didn't even know who Brian Wilson was, others had no idea what songs he was playing, and most couldn't care less; they just wanted The Beach Boys and/or Chicago. I felt like I was experiencing a historical event. The only disappointing thing was that Brian didn't play the Beach Boys' set. He popped up at the encores, again with the bass strapped on, but he was standing so far at the back of the stage that you could barely see him. He wasn't singing or playing, just kind of wandering around. I think he was gone before "Fun Fun Fun" was over.

During that '85 to '98 era, I didn't see Brian do songs from his solo album during a Beach Boys concert. I did see him play with The Boys in the Bay Area in May, 1990 at the Circle Star Theatre. Mike Love told Brian that his shoes looked "hideous" back stage. Nice guy. Another two highlights were the home video taken, presumably by Stamos of Brian Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Jeff Foskett, and Stamos himself on July 2, 1990.  It's known as the "Great Hotel Video". BUT the biggest highlight of that decade for me was........26 days later, where I saw Brian play a few feet in front of me here:

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I only saw Brian with the group one time other than the Seattle Kingdome show, it was 1985 - but Carl was gone! Never got an explanation for that one! At the time  I thought he must've left the band to do another solo album - which would've been strange timing, as the group had done what he wanted, recorded a new album, which he was all over. Brian sang God Only Knows and Good Vibrations at that show, was very slim, had one of those strap-on keyboards for some songs, and once again, did some dancing. Now I may be wrong about this, but my impression was that when Brian was working on his book ( Roll Eyes) and Sweet Insanity, he was basically out of the group. I can't imagine the guys being too warm towards him after all the stuff "Brian" said about them in "his" book. IJWMFTT certainly portrays the BB's part of Brian's life as in the past. And then Stars and Stripes came along.....
