Death of Reg Presley (who covered Good Vibrations)

Nobody has commented yet about the death yesterday of Reg Presley, lead singer of The Troggs of "Wild Thing" and "Love Is All Around" fame. But it seems worth starting a thread, partly because in 1975 the band recorded GV - albeit one of the most preposterous BBs covers ever captured on tape. (It's on YouTube but since I've just got my cellphone at the moment will leave it to someone else to put up a link, if they dare.)

Terrible news. Although The Troggs were definitely a second tier band they made some great singles. Sad to see Reg go to that great gig in the sky too soon.

Saw The Troggs recently on PBS. Don't know if Reg was the lead singer, but since it was filmed before 12/2011 (when he got sick and quit) I think it was he. The older audience was totally into "Wild Thing."

I also like the cover of Wild Thing called "Senator Bobby". Anybody here heard of it?

True story:

Ronnie Wood was doing some studio work with Bob Dylan and over the course of the date, he played Dylan the “Troggs Tapes”. Naturally, Dylan thought they were very funny.

It turned out that Troggs singer Reg Presley was working in an adjacent studio making a demo for a commercial.

When Wood discovered this, he approached Dylan all excited, saying “Remember that guy on the tape I played you? Well, he’s next door right now!”

Dylan says, “Really?! Wow, I gotta meet him. You gotta introduce me!”

So Ron Wood takes Bob Dylan next door to find Reg disconsolately fumbling with a bass guitar.

Dylan, by way of introduction, says “Hey, I didn’t know you played bass, man. How long you been playing bass?”

Reg looks up and with a deep sigh says, “All f*ckin’ afternoon, mate, all f*ckin’ afternoon”.

Reg wrote a lot of great songs. Although the Troggs may have been considered "second tier," they did quite a few more memorable songs than "Wild Thing." There's "I Can't Control Myself," "Lost Girl," "Surprise, Surprise," "Strange Movies," and so many others. The guy was also a classic performer. He's one of the godfathers of punk rock.

Reg and The Troggs had some great songs, but I can't help thinking of Hendrix blasting away on "Wild Thing"...  R.I.P. Reg...

When it comes to the Troggs, it's mighty believable it would take them that long. They were, after all, the masters of musical primitivism.
