Was there ever any thought by anyone of signing David Marks group Moon onto Brothers Records? I think it would have made a nice sign. Although, it may not have meant sales given the commercial failure of Flame.

No need. I think the deal they had with Mike Curb and Imperial Records was a natural since the Moon's drummer/producer Larry Brown had been involved with Curb during his Davie Allan and the Arrows days, as well as building Curb's Continental Sound studio where the Moon recorded both albums... and since David's mom worked for Imperial Records, she was essential in getting the band their record deal with Imperial. Brother was probably totally off their radar.

And if they HAD signed up with Brother, nobody would have EVER heard of them. (Pickle Brothers, anybody?)

Ok, well that makes sense. But it has always seemed odd to me how little David and the boys were in touch over the years. I suppose David wasn't an option to replace Brian on the road in 65? I guess he was busy with the Marksmen at the time. I did read in the Lost Beach Boy that he was asked by Mike and Dennis in the early 70s to play bass. Was the idea that he would become a full time Beach Boy the way they brought in Blondie and Ricky? I wonder what kind of songs David might have written during the So Tough/Holland period.

In 2003 no one would have been asking any of these questions. Yes, Dave's a high profile member of the Beach Boys now, but that wasn't the case for the majority of the past 48 years.

I agree with 37!ws that it's a very good thing they didn't get signed to Brother.

Not sure that's *quite* accurate. The renewed interest in David really came when he rejoined the band in the late 90s, although at first he was regarded as a bit of a joke until enough people had seen him perform and then later Jon's book came out. Your general point does hold though, of course.

And of course for a long time David wasn't particularly interested in the Beach Boys' music either. I remember reading an interview with him from the early 80s where he absolutely slated pretty much everything they'd done and Carl Wilson's guitar technique in particular, saying they hadn't progressed at all since he'd left.

I don't see it as particularly odd that they had relatively little contact for a few decades though -- when David left the band he was 14 or so. I can't think of a single friend from my early teens that I spend any time with.
