I don't think it's really lying when a person truly believes what they're saying.  They could be absolutely wrong but that doesn't have anything to do with honesty.

Which is why lie detector tests can be unreliable - if the person being questioned truly believes what they're saying is the truth, that's what will register.

A fresh one: in the Jack Reilly interview (see recent thread) he claims the 71 Surfs Up tag is Brian, Carl Dennis and himself.  Now it might just be me but I hear Al and Mike all over that …

This might settle it:

I don't think this one really counts as a "lie", but I'll mention it anyway. What about the "Brian's in the music" quote? I've always heard and read that Dennis said it, but Ian and Jon's new book claims that it was Mike that said it. I believe it was at Princeton in 1971. In Ian and Jon's book it says that a fan asked where Brian was, and Mike responded with "Brian's at home...Brian's in the music".

Well, I've been called a liar for stating something I honestly believed but probably wasn't true earlier this year. Am I a liar? Or someone who made another mistake?

As for the JFK thing, like I said, your can draw your own conclusions but personally, I think it's just a little too romantic of a story with too many discrepancies.  I mean none of the guys who most claim it to be true agree where it happened.  Vail's story is obviously the most possible (considering that's where the band was at the time!) but regardless of their whereabouts, there's still only his word that Brian and Mike wrote it in the hotel room.

Why Fred would lie?  For the same reason as Brian and Mike:  It makes a really nice story! Cheesy

Except that Fred wouldn't lie. He's like Boyd - his integrity is unquestionable.

I stand corrected.

 Thumbs Up

Brian: Smile will NEVER come out! (of course he probably meant it at the time)

Dennis: Brian is the Beach Boys, we are his f**King messangers. (Didn't he say this in 68 or 69? By then the whole band was involved and Brian did hardly anything on 20/20.)

"I guess I'm such a sentimental sap…"

Mike Love, in Brian Is Back

If we're including lies within lyrics that widens the field. We could start with "Surfin' is the only life, the only way for me" and pay special attention to "well, I'm not braggin' babe..."

Vega-tables (although, Brian doesn't sing it, Al does. I imagine Al was a much healthier person then Brian)
